Sportsnet.ca is reporting Paul Godrey is stepping down as president and CEO at the end of the year, ending his eight year association with the club.

According to the Toronto Star, the team could look to a man who was honoured on the Level of Excellence back on Opening Day to fill Godrey's shoes.

Here's another  link. Gillick who is retiring this year and Paul Beeston who apparently still has an office at the Rogers Centre  have been mentioned as replacements,

Beeston earlier said 'no interest' and the points made then fit. Basically, he has done it already why would he do it again?

To my thinking the Jays should do a search for the best president out there. Check other teams VP's and the like to find someone with the combo of skills they want/need. Godfrey has (from what I can tell) been mainly the lead cheerleader for the Jays - promoting them, pushing them in the business community, getting those corporate seats sold and TV ratings up. Let the GM handle the baseball, president handle the bucks. Worked great in the Beeston/Gillick days, has provided a lot of money for Rogers during the Godfrey/JP days, so why not again?

Now, who is out there who has strong business ties and is free? If John Tory had quit as PC leader I'd say go for him, but given he still thinks he can become premier who comes in next? Do you go for a politician, a business man, an ex-sports person, or someone else (media personality maybe?). Do the Jays go for a minority or woman in order to produce a (visibly) new face for the Jays to the public and perhaps get into other markets not previously available? Does it have to be someone involved in sports or can it be someone who has never been there before? Should be interesting to see what happens.

Bob Rae.

Well, given the Jays claim to lose money regardless of reality, maybe Rae would make it possible for that to become the reality :)

Still, I figure Rae, like Tory, has higher political dreams and isn't likely to lose his seat in the election (not that it stopped Tory from continuing).

There's no shortage of potential replacements from the ranks of politicians. In particular, I'd nominate Greg Sorbara, though his politics (Liberal) don't match Godfrey's (Conservative).

What does the president of a baseball club do, exactly? Is the position more about generating revenues, profits, and goodwill in the community (including such things as tax breaks and stadium funding) - or creating a winning team?

Blair on the latest developments.

Blair is going to miss having Godfrey as a source on this team, I suspect.
