A Phelps had a multi-homer game. But, this Phelps wasn’t Josh, or even Michael, who apparently can accomplish nearly anything. Instead, this Phelps was a second baseman who slugged his Mahoning Valley Scrappers to victory over Auburn.

Auburn 0 @ Mahoning Valley 3Boxscore

Auburn was shut out by Mahoning Valley despite limiting the Scrappers to three hits. However, when a team only gets three hits of its own it is hard to generate much offence unless you score on homers or errors, which is exactly what the Scrappers did. Two solo shots by second baseman Cord Phelps and an unearned run because of a passed ball by Karim Turkamani gave Mahoning Valley their three runs and the victory.

Andrew Liebel started and went 2 innings. He struck out one and gave up Phelps’ first homer. Evan Crawford went 3 innings. He allowed one hit and surrendered the unearned run. Jon Cryer pitched a scoreless inning before Charles Huggins went 1.1 innings and allowed Phelps’s second shot. Matthew Daly then pitched the last 0.2 innings without allowing a baserunner. Meanwhile, Auburn didn’t get a runner past second base with their three hits, which consisted of doubles by Jonathan Del Campo and Christopher Hopkins and a single by Turkamani. The Doubledays drew two walks and struck out 12 times.

Three Stars:

3rd Star – [None Awarded]

2nd Star – Christopher Hopkins, 1-3, 2B, BB, 2 TB

1st Star – Evan Crawford, 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER 0 BB, 0 K

For those of you who are not keeping track that is the end of the minor league season.  The AFL will get going in a month and the Batters Box top30 prospects will be published in early October.

I've started working on my "top 30" list.

Any chance we could have a sort of contest - pick an end date and those of us that want could come up with our top 30 list and email it to a mailbox of sorts and then after the REAL DaBOX top 30 comes out DaBox could publish our feeble attempts. Might be interesting...eh?

Was that totally incoherent or am I just still high from the Jays going 8 straight?

Top 30? Snider, Cecil, Mills, Campbell, Arencibia, Jeroloman, Collins ...er... OK, my top of mind knowledge of the minors isn't deep enough for 10 let alone 30.

Guess that is what we all love about you minor league addicts...er...writers. Directing us to the guys who are great in the minors. This years top 30 will be a lot more hopeful than past ones though. Wonder how deep it will be.

For reference...
Last years top 10
Last years 11-20
Last years 21-30

FYI: The guys I list above were #1,2,27,--,13,16,--

Justin Jackson has got to be top 5 after being one of the best offensive players in the Eastern League this season. His glove is supposed to be ace, so even competent offence would make him a real shiny prospect.

In Sunday's paper, the Buffalo News says it's a toss-up between Toronto and New York as to who will sign Buffalo as its AAA affiliate.

If anyone wants to get their top 30's "on the record" they can e-mail them to registration at battersbox.ca.  Deadline would be Sept 30th as the Batters box list won't be published until early October.

Justin Jackson wasn't in the Eastern League this year, he played for Lansing and put up rather similar numbers to the our other infield prospects there, Ahrens and Tolisano. Perhaps you were thinking of combining Scott Campbell's bat with Jackson's glove, which would be sweet.
