The affiliates knew there was no way they could out shine the "blockbuster" trade the Jays organization made earlier in the day so the players simply mailed it in as the clubs managed just one win.

Pawtucket 8 Syracuse 3

Ricky Romero had his second straight bad outing at Triple-A, which also happens to coincide with his good friend's (Jesse Litsch) exit from Syracuse to Toronto. He allowed five runs on 10 hits and one walk in 5.2 innings. Romero also struck out seven batters. Bill Murphy, usually a starter, allowed three runs in two-thirds of an inning. Travis Snider continued to hit well with a 2-for-4 night, one run scored and two RBI. Buck Coats went 2-for-4 and Pedro Lopez also had two hits.

New Hampshire 2 Binghamton 0

Robert Ray returned to form for the Fisher Cats and shut the Mets affiliate out for seven innings with five hits and one walk allowed. He also struck out five batters. Mike MacDonald pitched the final 1.1 innings for the save. J.P Arencibia, Eric Nielsen and Ryan Patterson also had two hits. David Smith was 1-for-3 with an RBI and two walks. Scott Campbell continued with his late-season swoon and went 0-for-3.

Dunedin postponed due to rain

Fort Wayne 7 Lansing 3

Chi Hung Cheng was roughed up and allowed four unearned runs in three innings thanks to five hits, one walk and six errors. Edgar Estanga continued to struggle and is approaching 100 innings out of the pen - it's time to shut him down before he hurts himself having posted a 6.64 ERA in his last 20 innings after dominating in the first half of the season. Frank Gailey struck out five batters in two hitless innings and Tim Collins added two strikeouts and a walk in one frame. Darin Mastroianni went 2-for-3 and stole a base as he attempts to make up for a disappointing season. John Tolisano was 0-for-4 but had an RBI.

Williamsport 6 Auburn 2

Aussie Jared Wells allowed six runs in three innings. The bullpen was brilliant after that, though, and allowed just one walk in six innings. Dan Farquhar struck out five in three innings and Charles Huggins fanned seven over his three innings. Michael McDade went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Adam Amar returned from the All-Star game, where he won the home run derby, and went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

GCL Tigers 1 GCL Jays 0 (Seven innings - rain)

Ryan Page did not allow a run in five innings. The Tigers managed just three hits against him and struck out five times. Joel Castillo took the loss after allowing an unearned run. Kenny Wilson showed some life with a 2-for-4 night to go along with his 22 stolen base. Canadian Brad McElroy went 1-for-3. Catcher Jonnathan (yes there are two n's) Valdez was 1-for-2.

The Three Stars:
3. Travis Snider, for a 2-for-4 night in Triple-A
2. Charles Huggins and Dan Farquhar for allowing just one walk and no hits in six innings of relief (and 12 strikeouts)
1. Robert Ray for seven shutout innings, leading to the affiliates' only win

I guess a good question is who will be ready for 2009 (potentially)?  I'm ignoring AAAA guys (ie: has to be 25 or younger).

Obvious:
Travis Snider: 372/426/535 at AAA, 262/357/461 in AA, 279/333/557 in A+.  Lots of K's but lots of other good stuff

Likely but more AAA time is needed or they are just not good enough:
Buck Coats: 293/351/418 in AAA - ready for 4th outfielder role or platoon situation, unless a gold glove not an everyday ML
Hector Luna: 282/333/416 in AAA - a utility guy, however we already have tons of these (Scutaro/Inglett/Bautista)
Brett Cecil: 4.91 ERA in AAA but overall (A+, AA, AAA) is 2.88 ERA over 106 1/3 IP with 35 BB and 119 K's, only thing missing is endurance (4 IP per start, 4.6 in AAA).  Should spend most of 2009 in AAA if not all of it.
Scott Campbell: 318/413/453 in AA, will start in AAA next year but if Hill is still out or moved to SS then a mid-season call up is likely
Kyle Phillips: 306/370/455 in AA, a 1B moving to AAA in '09 has to make the majors in 2009 or risks being run over by Cooper
Brian Dopirak: 309/375/557 overall between A+ and AA, probably starts 09 in AA but like Phillips has to charge fast to the majors at 1B or else
Robinzon Diaz: has hit poorly in AAA but now is the time for him or he risks becoming like Thigpen, a failed prospect.

Many pitchers could be listed in the 'Likely' but I just don't feel like going through them.  So backups for the outfield (Snider/Coats), infield (Luna, Campbell), first base/DH (Dopirak, Phillips) and catcher (Diaz, Jeroloman, Arencibia) are all close to the majors.  Shortstop and 1B look the weakest imo but Cooper looks to be a hard charger shooting for a 2010 debut.  Lets hope JP finds a way to trade for a young SS.

The Syracuse game happened to be televised in my neck of the woods (Massachusetts, via NESN) and what I saw out of Ricky Romero was eerily similar to what I saw in AA last year and in April this year: going 1-0 or 2-0 on many of the batters.  In his defense somewhat was that the first 2 hits he gave up were weak (slow roller right behind the 2B bag and a Texas leaguer in no-man's land 5 ft off the RF line).  Still an uninspiring performance.  And his frustration showed when pulled from the game as he whipped his glove off the dugout wall.

Kyle Phillips: 306/370/455 in AA, a 1B moving to AAA in '09 has to make the majors in 2009 or risks being run over by Cooper...

I IRC, in a recent Kevin Gray article I believe it was mentioned that Phillips will be a minor league free agent this off-season.  So he may not be in the Jays' plans.  Which may lead to Cooper getting the possible nod at AA to start 2009.

I was at the Auurn game last night.  Wells was not sharp but Farquhar and Huggins were, obviously.  Farquhar is an interesting pitcher, he throws two pitches from 3/4 arm angle, sidearm and submarine style.  In an at-bat he will vary his arm angle from pitch to pitch.  Huggins is a lefty who hides the ball well and was just blowing high fastballs past the hitters.  Look for updates from Binghamton and Auburn on Monday and/or Tuesday next week.

Marc - yes - a disappointing season for Mastroianni.

Most disappointing is the fact that he didnt get to play over 1/3 of the season.
Play -  play a little  - maybe play - play - dont play - play alot - dont play - great way for a guy to develop  - LOL

Of course - the "real"  prospects are just rocking and rolling.

Go to a game - and watch this crap.
15 k's per game - and each game worse than the next.

Defense sucks - offense sucks and baserunning is little league caliber.

Then do another report on the Mastroianni "Disappointment".

LOL

and each game worse than the next.

You realize that's the opposite of what you actually appear to have meant? You're writing says it's better every game. LOL indeed.

Great observation - sorry I messed up with the language thing.

I guess I should have said - each game worse than the last game.

Now that the linguistics have been corrected - lets talk about the content of the message.

What do you think about the last 40 games?

You think this is good?

You think it is fair to point out the "disappointment" of a role player -  a 5th outfielder -  a guy that they threw into the garbage can back in May - when your million dollar babies are sucking wind all over the field?

Mastroianni shoudnt be the focus - he'as a nobody fill in guy that Dick Scott threw in the garbage after 40 games. I will ask again - Why dont you talk about the million dollar babies that are sucking wind?

Other than your astute observations about sentence structure - you have anything to say about that?

LOL
