Auburn won their second game behind a strong start from Josh Wells and two hits from the Jays number one pick, David Cooper.  Dunedin also won thanks to a big game from Cory Patton who was a single short of the cycle.  New Hampshire were trounced.  Syracuse and Lansing had the day off.  The Gulf Coast Jays start their season Thursday.

Syracuse - Scheduled day off

Connecticut 9  New Hampshire 0

Scott Richmond was pitching shutout ball for four innings but he gave up four runs, only one earned, in the fifth.  Bubba Nelson gave up four more in the sixth, while getting one out, to give him a 108 ERA.

New Hampshire hitters had only three hits.

Fort Myers 5  Dunedin 9

Adrian Martin pitched well, he went four innings and gave up one run and left in a 1-1 tie.  Dunedin's run was a solo home run from Marcus Cabral, his first of the year.  The Jays exploded for five runs in the fifth against prospect Deolis Guerra. Cory Patton started with a double, then with two out Cabral singled in a run.  David Corrente hit a two run home run.  Sean Shoffit followed with a solo home run.  Luis Sanchez singled, as did Adam Calderone, and Sanchez later scored on a passed ball.  Cory Patton hit a three run home run in the eighth to seal the win.

Auburn opted for the all-Aussie battery, with 19 year-old Chris House receiving 21 year-old Joshua Charles-Hanford Wells.

Rob Neyer had an interesting article on ESPN.com today (I'd link it, but it's a subscriber page) talking about how with prospects you can't just look at raw stats, but also ages and league averages. With that in mind, I thought I would take a look at some of our 19-year olds in the Midwest league, and how they have fared through the first half (listed as AVG/OBP/OPS).

Kevin Ahrens (237 AB): .266/.328/.712
Johermyn Chavez (208 AB): .192/.253/.566
Eric Eiland (91 AB): .264/.385/.748
Justin Jackson (212 AB): .231/.343/.701
Michael McDade (177 AB): .209/.247/.558
Moises Sierra (238 AB): .265/.300/.691
John Tolisano (233 AB): .279/.366/.782
LEAGUE AVERAGE: .249/.321/.690

Obviously Chavez and McDade have been disappointing thus far, but the crop of Ahrens, Jackson, Siuerra and Tolisano have put together very impressive seasons for their age.

Marc -

What is the rotation looking like in Dunedin?  I know it consists of Ray Gonzalez, Kenny Rodriguez, and Adrian Martin - but who are the other two spots going to go to?  Is it high time they are bringing up Mills and Boone?

Wow I'm off my game and forgot about Ginley.

And I suppose the demoted Wideman is #5.

But honestly, shouldn't those two guys replace Martin and Gonzalez in the rotation?

Kyle Ginley and AJ Wideman are also starting in Dunedin.  The fifth has been Gus Chacin who is now on the 7 day DL.

The difficulty for the Jays is that none of the Dunedin starters are pitching well enough to be promoted to AA.  If the Jays do promote Mills or Rzepczynski then someone will have to be dropped or demoted.  Again none of these pitchers are pitching badly enough for that to happen.

Having said that you have to favour your prospects and Mills and Rzepczynski fit that description.  I would think that the Jays might wait and look to promote one or both if there is an injury or in any event for the last month of the season.

Does anyone know why Alan Farina is on the 7 day DL?

Nice to see the kids off and running.  Stolen bases for Wilson and Brisker.
