Syracuse had a come-from-behind win as Bill Murphy pitched well.  AJ Wideman looked good through six innings but picked up the loss in the seventh.  Travis Snider had two more hits as he gets back on track.  Dunedin lost when the bullpen couldn't hold back the Tigers.  Lansing split a double-header.  Randy Boone and Eric Eiland stayed hot.

Syracuse 7  Charlotte 2

Syracuse could only get one run off Charlotte starter Wes Whisler through six innings.  That run came in the sixth, Wayne Lydon singled, stole second and scored on a Pedro Lopez single.  Bill Murphy pitched well, seven inngs, six hits, no walks, nine K's.

In the eighth Chip Cannon and Lydon walked, Lopez singled to load the bases, Adam Lind grounded out to score a run and tie the game.  Hector Luna then delivered the big blow, a two run single to make it a 4-2 game.

The Chiefs added three more in the ninth, Eric Nielsen singled in one run and Lind singled in two more.

The Chiefs had eight hits, Lydon and Lopez had two each.

New Hampshire 3  Trenton 5

AJ Wideman pitched very well through six innings, only one run conceded on six hits.  However in the seventh Wideman gave up a walk, two singles and a run before being replaced by Sean Stidfole.  Stidfole gave up a three run jack to Austin Jackson and that left Wideman with four runs allowed.

New Hampshire took the lead in the fifth inning, Aaron mathews singled in two runs.  The Fishers added another in the sixth, Travis Snider doubled and Ryan Klosterman tripled him home.  New Hampshire had the bases loaded in the eighth but couldn't score.

New Hampshire had seven hits, Snider, Patterson and Klosterman had two each.

For prospect watchers Austin Jackson is hitting .273 at age 21.  Jose Tabata is hitting .221 and struggling at age 19.

Dunedin 1  Lakeland 4

The Jays got to Rick Porcello in the first inning, Adam Calderone, Matt Lane and Brian Dopirak each singled to make it 1-0.  Lakeland tied the game off Adrian Martin in the second inning.  The game remained tied until the sixth when the Tigers scored three off reliever Chad Blackwell.

Adrian Martin pitched five innings and allowed one run one eight hits in 4.1 innings.

The Jays had five hits, no-one had two.

Lansing 3  West Michigan 6 - game 1

Trystan Magnuson struggled and gave up five runs in 2.2 innings.  Chi-Hung Cheng, back off the DL, allowed one run.

Lansing didn't score until the sixth where they scored all three runs.  The big blows were doubles by Manny Rodriguez and John Tolisano and an RBI single from Yohermyn Chavez.

Lansing had six hits, Eric Eiland stayed hot, going 2-2 with a walk.

Lansing 5  West Michigan 0 - game 2

Lansing wasted no time scoring four runs in the first inning of the nightcap.  Darin Mastroianni walked, Justin Jackson singled,  Matt Liuzza singled, CJ Ebarb walked, John Tolisano hit a sac fly, Eric Eiland singled and Raul Barron singled in two more. With Randy Boone on the mound those runs were enough.  Boone pitched a complete game, seven innings and gave up three hits with one walk.  Bonne had seven K's and his ERA is now down to 1.31.

The Lugnuts added an insurance run in the sixth, Mike Mcdade doubled and scored on a single from Moises Sierra.

Poor Mr. Eiland, 3 for 4 with three walks in a double bill and no star.

Eiland is batting 1.000 versus righties, heartwarming news for an organization starved for lefthanded production.

Alas, that .333 average against lefties may prove his Achilles heel.

Looks like Luna's recent hot tip has earned him a spot back on the 40 man and, indeed, up to the show for tonight's game. Velandia's been designated.

Luna for Velandia? That, I don't get.  I just don't see a role for Luna with the current major league roster. And really, he's not hitting that well in Syracuse.

It's not a move that really makes sense at all but I guess the Jays are in the habit of shuffling players around.  At least Valendia can play defence.  I'm not really sure what Luna's average major league skill is, let alone standout major league skill.
HollywoodHartman - Saturday, May 17 2008 @ 02:52 PM EDT (#185481) #
It's because they can not call Valendia up within 10 days of sending him down unless there is an injury, and they needed a warm body until Eck gets back.

Velandia was designated to make room on the active roster for Purcey (he has no options).  Purcey was sent back down and replaced by Luna.  Velandia, I'm assuming could not be recalled until he cleared waivers.

Luna is hitting .393 in May, slugging .492.  I don't think you want to see Inglett too much at SS the way he let the final out play him on Thursday afternoon.

A player can be outrighted from the 40-man roster to the minors once in his career.

After that, as is the case with Velandia, he has a 3-day window in which to decide to elect immediate free agency or report to Syracuse and be granted free agency at the end of the season.  During that time his status is frozen.

I was surprised at the Luna recall.  I thought maybe Russ Adams would be recalled. Giving the Jays a little more flexibility with someone who can also play the outfield given the day-to-day status of Kevin Mench.

Further surprised that Luna was replaced at Syracuse by Marcos Cabral (.188 combined at New Hampshire and Dunedin).  But, it's probably only until next Thursday when Eckstein is expected to return and either Luna or Inglett sent back to Syracuse.  I was hoping Scott Campbell would be given a taste of AAA.

Mike Green - Saturday, May 17 2008 @ 03:20 PM EDT (#185484) #
All right.  Luna is a 25th man, a right-handed pinch-hitter.  Inglett pinch-hits for Scutaro, LOOGY comes on, in comes Luna.  I guess with Mench day-to-day, there is a logic.
Mylegacy - Saturday, May 17 2008 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#185486) #
My main recollection of Luna's brief Jays play last year was his bat - I remember it being ungodly slow - big long slow swing. Obviously, it's fast enouth to get at AAA pitchers.

Anyone know what happened to Paul Franko? he was on the Dunedin roster earlier this week, but is no longer listed there.

Interesting infield in Syracuse tonight, Thigpen at first, Chip Cannon at 3rd (I'm wondering if Milb.com has made a mistake here), and Marcos Cabral at second.  I was really hoping that Campbell would have got the call up for Syracuse.
