The road was a kind place to the parent club and its top affiliate last night.  However, the home cooking didn't help the other affiliates as they looked lost.

Syracuse 5 Charlotte 2

Charlotte, NC - Southpaw Davis Romero cruised in the early part of this game by allowing just one single in the first three innings and a double play ball helped him face the minimum 10 batters with one out in the fourth.  It was at that point when Romero gave up a solo homer to Chris Getz to give Charlotte a 1-0 lead.   The Chiefs responded in the next half-inning as Adam Lind hit a bases-clearing double off knuckleballer Charlie Haeger,  scoring a Curtis Thigpen single and walks to Chip Cannon and Wayne Lydon, to give Syracuse a 3-1 advantage.

Romero stranded a single and a walk in the fifth and turned things over to Brandon League, who punched out two batters in a three-up, three-down sixth inning.  In the 7th, League was also victimized by the long ball as Thomas Collaro connected for a solo shot to cut the Syracuse lead to 3-2.  Adam Russell, who got to throw in the visitor's bullpen at Rogers Centre but never appearing in a game, and Ray King held down the Chiefs for innings six to eight.  That changed in the ninth when Pedro Lopez connected for a two-run homer off King, plating a Wayne Lydon single, to restore the Chiefs' three-run cushion.  Lefty Mike Gosling worked a one-hit frame to get the save.

Boxscore Notes - Davis Romero worked a season-high five innings, throwing 63 pitches to get his first win of the year.  He gave up one homer and two singles with a 5-1 K/BB mark.  Overall, his K/BB is 30-10 in 26 frames and hitters are batting just .204 against him.  However, he has surrendered 5 HR's...........Brandon League surrendered his first long ball of the year as a Chief but that was his only blemish in three frames of relief.  He sports a groundout/airout ratio of 4.8 to 1......Hector Luna is swinging the hot twig with a 11 game hitting streak, pushing his average to .299 after a 2-for-4 night....Adam Lind and Curtis Thigpen also had two hits each.  Lind is now hitting .333 while Thigpen is at .190.

Connecticut 7 New Hampshire 2

Manchester, NH - The good news came in the first five innings, the bad news arrived in the last four.  Brandon Magee allowed just two singles and struck out four in the first five innings to Luke Danes' favourite team (for those who didn't watch "The Gilmore Girls", actor/former minor league pitcher Scott Patterson wore the Defenders road cap during the final season!).   The F-Cats got on the board first in their half of inning five when Aaron Matthews delivered a two-out, two-run double off Defenders starter Garrett Broshuis to grab a 2-0 lead.  However, Magee gave it back and then some as the Giants farm club hit for the cycle and scored six times, with the key blows being a David Maroul homer and a two-run triple by Simon KlinkJamie Vermilyea gave up a run scoring triple before getting the final out of the inning.  Maroul would homer again in the ninth, this time off Vermilyea, who pitched the final 3 1/3 innings for New Hampshire.

Boxscore Notes -  Brandon Magee is now 0-6 in his AA career.   After a strong first five innings, Magee appeared to run out of gas as he wound up allowing 7 hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings.  Overall, he has allowed 57 hits in 43.1 innings, which translates to a .315 opponents batting average and his K/BB ratio is just 22-17.........Aaron Matthews had half of New Hampshire's hit total with a 2-for-4 night and has pushed his average to .302.  Jacob Butler and Ryan Patterson had the other hits......And, of course, Brian "B.B" Jeroloman drew another walk so the BJWM is now at 19.

Clearwater 4 Dunedin 3

Dunedin, FL - The Threshers got to D-Jays starter Robert Ray in the first when a Jesus Gonzalez error at third allowed the leadoff man to reach.  A stolen base and a two-out single allowed Clearwater to cross the plate first.  Dunedin responded in their half of the first with a pair of two-out run scoring singles by J.P. Arencibia and Paul Franko, cashing in Brad Emaus and Brian Dopirak walks, to take a 2-1 advantage.  Franko drove in the third Dunedin run by driving home a Emaus double in the fifth.

Robert Ray set down 8 of 9 hitters during one stretch but a leadoff walk in the sixth came back to haunt him when Gus Milner connected for a two-run bomb to tie the game at 3-3.  Chad Blackwell came out of the pen and he struck out four of the five batters he faced.  However, he made one mistake to Adrian Cardenas, the Phils supplemental first round pick two years ago, as he went deep in the seventh to give Clearwater the lead.  Brandon Camardese and Connor Falkenbach worked a clean frame each to give the offence a chance to rally but they left the bases loaded in the eighth and two men on in the ninth to come up, as the late Tom Cheek liked to say, a day late and a dollar short.

Boxscore Notes - Robert Ray had a mixed outing by allowing four hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.  Two of the three runs he allowed were earned and he only struck out two.  Of the 14 outs in play, 8 were on the ground.  Overall, his 35-14 K/BB ratio in 36 innings isn't bad but hitters are batting over .300 against him........Brandon Camardese's ERA is 0.54 after his scoreless inning.  He has allowed just a solo homer among his 9 hits in 16.2 IP with a 13-4 K/BB ratio....J.P. Arencibia is hitting .375 over his last 10 games after a 3-for-5 performance.  His average is up to .288....Brian Dopirak and Brad Emaus each had a hit and two walks to get aboard thrice and Paul Franko was 2-for-5 with 2 RBI but Dunedin's 11 hits were not enough as they left 12 men on base.

Dayton 3 Lansing 2

Lansing, MI - Lugnuts lefty Marc Rzepczynski set down the first five in a row on 3 K's and 2 groundouts but a two-out double and single in the second gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead.  The Lugnuts tied it in the third when a throwing error at short allowed Moises Sierra to score after he doubled with two out.  The inning might have been bigger for Lansing but Yohermyn Chavez was doubled off first after Raul Barron lined to right.

Rzepcynski scattered two hits and a walk over the next two innings before turning the ball over to fellow lefty Cody Crowell, who struck out two of the three batters he faced in a perfect fifth.  Ross Buckwalter worked a clean sixth but back to back doubles in the seventh gave the Reds affiliate a 2-1 lead.  After being held in check by Dayton starter Enerio Del Rosario, the Lugnuts got to reliever Tyler Rhoden in the seventh as Yohermyn Chavez singled home Manny Rodriguez to tie the game at 2-2.  However, Chavez made yet another baserunning blunder as he was doubled off on a pop up to first.  He may have forgotten how many outs there were.  So much for learning from previous mistakes!

Edgar Estanga came on in the eighth and stuffwise, he was about as sharp as a bowling ball.  A leadoff walk, a sac bunt and a single gave Dayton a 3-2 lead.  Estanga then loaded up the bases on a double, single and intentional walk but Moises Sierra showed off his gun in right field by throwing out a runner at the plate for an inning-ending double play.   Sierra tried to start a rally in the bottom of the eighth with a leadoff double and Justin Jackson followed with a walk to put runners at first and second.  However, Dayton reliever Terrell Young relieved Tyler Rhoden and set down the last six batters to get the save.

Boxscore Notes - Marc Rzepczynksi allowed four hits and a walk in four frames with a 5-1 K/BB mark and a 5-1 groundball/flyball ratio.......Despite allowing five hits and three walks in two innings, Edgar Estanga gave up just one run with his ERA only jumping from 0.42 to 0.76.  However, he took the loss to fall to 3-1 on the year........Moises Sierra, Kevin Ahrens and Yohermyn Chavez had two hits apiece with Sierra collecting two doubles........Manny Rodriguez had the other Lansing hit and Justin Jackson drew the lone walk but Jackson is just 7-for-36 in his last 10 games to see his average fall to .275.

Thanks, #2JB, for the Union Leader link.  Scott Campbell apparently made a nice diving play in last night's game.

I wonder if Butterfield consults on the infield defensive skills of the minor leaguers. It would be a shame not to take advantage of Butterfield's talents in this way.

They keep stretching out Davis Romero, and he keeps responding well.   I'll repeat a question that I asked a week ago, which went unanswered at the time:  do the Jays envision him as a starter or a reliever in the majors?  With the disappearance of Burnett at season's end, it would be nice to see some solid competition for the 5th spot in the 2009 rotation.  Purcey might be capable of handling the job, but I don't want the job to be handed to him on a silver platter, by defauIt.  Next season will be too early for Cecil or Ricky Romero, so who is going to compete with Purcey for the job?  John Parrish and Bill Murphy?  Other aging veterans that Ricciardi picks up from the scrap heap?   Not the most exciting prospect, so I'd prefer to have a resurgent Davis Romero pushing Purcey to a higher standard in spring training '09.

I believe Wolfe is someone that is being stretched out to compete with Purcey.  There is also Janssen who may be around, although likely not ready to contribute at the start of the season.

Romero usually split his time in the minors between starting and relieving, so I'm a bit surprised to see him starting now.  I have no idea why, but I wonder if it is because it's easier to give him more predictive workloads as a starter than a reliever and thus easier to handle the rehab.  Also, I'm stunned at his K rate so far.  He was usually close to 1 K / 5 BF, but now is under 1 per 4.

Most scouting reports on Davis Romero pegged him as most likely being a reliever in the long term due to his fringy fastball and small stature.  This was before his injury.  The way that he's being stretched out now seems to indicate that the Jays see him as being a potential starter.
ayjackson - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 01:04 PM EDT (#185224) #
Maybe Bravis Leagero will be our fifth starter next year.  League has been piggy backing all of Romero's starts since his demotion and I think the reasoning behind the strategies for both pitchers is consistent innings so they can find consistent command of their pitches.

Aside from one casual comment by Arnsberg towards the end of last season, there's been absolutely no evidence that the Jays are looking at Wolfe as a starter.   They didn't stretch him out in spring training or anywhere else.  It's too bad -- I'd like to see him given a shot at the role -- but the Jays really don't seem to see him in that capacity.  Arnsberg's comment was very intriguing at the time, but it went nowhere.  So I'm inclined to think, in retrospect, that he just meant it as a throwaway compliment, meaning basically  "Wolfe has a good arm" and that's about it.

That's why I think the Jays have a bit of a depth problem among starters.  Aside from Purcey, who's left?  Chacin and Banks are finished or gone.  Cecil and R. Romero are still too raw.  Janssen would be great to have back, but who knows if he can recover from such a serious injury.  Parrish and Murphy are getting long in the tooth, and have been found wanting elsewhere.  That's why it would be great to see Davis Romero develop into something.

I think the flawed assumption is that Ricciardi will be the one trying to find candidates for the 5th starter spot next season.  Is it fair to assume that the odds of Ricciardi having a 2009 with Toronto are getting smaller?
Pistol - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 02:12 PM EDT (#185232) #
I don't think you can assume that Romero or Cecil couldn't make it up next year.  For Romero, he'll need to turn a corner (like Purcey seems to have).  Cecil I think probably just needs experience.  That he's in AA now is a good sign.

Litsch wasn't overwhelming by any means in the minors and he got just 24 AA/AAA starts before he was up for good.
Mike Green - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 02:16 PM EDT (#185233) #
Bravis Leaguero or Dandon Romgue both work well as a #8 starter (counting Janssen as #6 and Purcey as #7). There would be no harm in having another option.

I still think we're at least a year away from that sort of talk.

I don't want to take the time to look through annual revenue figures, but Ricciardi has driven a renewed interest in baseball in this city the past few years.  I'll use attendance as a proxy - it's not perfect, but decent, especially since the Jays have been in the same stadium for so long.

Gate numbers have been solid (at least for Toronto) throughout Ricciardi's regime.  After a couple of bad years in the beginning, Ricciardi has brought attendance to levels not seen since 1998.

For reference, in Ash's last year as GM, Toronto attendance was 23,647 (23rd in the majors), since then, it's been:
  • 20,220 (25th)
  • 22,215 (23rd)
  • 23,457 (24th)
  • 24,724 (23rd)
  • 28,422 (18th)
  • 29,143 (18th)
Even with this year's attendance of 25,485, that's still almost an 8% improvement over Ash's last year - and average attendance usually goes up pretty well after May due to more baseball-like weather.  Compare that to Ash who saw attendance fall from almost 40k when he took over (1995) to below 24k when he left.
Source for most figures is ESPN or BBRef

Like it or not, Ricciardi has helped to drive interest in Toronto baseball to a level not seen in a long time.  That's what he's tasked with.
John Northey - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 02:41 PM EDT (#185240) #
5th starter?  Howsabout going down to 4?

I remember a few years ago talk of the Jays going that way but someone in the rotation (Lidle?) was against it.  Halladay was all for it though, and I suspect the 3 kids currently in the rotation would be too.   Recent studies (not sure where, just recall reading them) have suggested that the 4 man rotation worked in the past due to it being pitches after a pitcher is tired hurting them, not raw total pitches during a season.  Worked nicely for the Jays in the early 80's with Stieb/Clancy/Leal getting 38-40 starts each in '82 and the 4th slot being a mix of future relievers Gott/Eichhorn and a collection various non-stars (Bomback/Garvin/Geisel/Jackson).  The big 3 had 34+ starts in each of the next 2 seasons before Leal's career ended (ineffective) and Clancy had his one injury year.

Syracuse has been playing with a 22-man roster since they designated Santos and Thorpe, presumably (although I don't know for sure) keeping the roster spots open in the event both players cleared waivers and were assigned back to Syracuse.

Now that Santos has moved to the Twins organization, we may possibly (hopefully) see Scott Campbell move up from New Hampshire.

I seriously hope that Ricciardi is not being kept around solely for his business acumen.  If this is the case then we should hire him as Team President and find somebody who is able to put a contending product on the field.

I've been a JP supporter for a long time I just think that after this many years he may have run out of excuses for not contending.  If he's such a great businessman let's have him focus on the business side of things.  I for one would be much happier with someone who is a better talent evaluator then he has seemed to be.

I don't think Ricciardi is being solely kept in place for his business acumen and did not mean to imply as such.

However, Ricciardi does seem to be good at developing fan interest through his staffing of a baseball team and being the public face of said team.  That is far from having strong business acumen, but it is a good reason to keep him as a general manager.

There is a lot more to business than getting fans.  From the perspective of a baseball team, there is negotiation of tv contracts, influencing MLB-wide decisions, lobbying with local governments on a variety of areas, general financing decisions, etc..

Finally, I doubt Godfrey would promote Ricciardi into filling Godfrey's own position.
Noah - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 07:39 PM EDT (#185265) #
I never though that Godfrey would I was just running with your initial thought.

I just feel like, as a fan, I'm much more concerned with the results on the field, than the results in the stands.  I am a firm believer that fans will come when the team competes.  Listen it's great that our attendance has grown under JP, but on top of that so has our payroll.  JP has been given far more money to win then Gord Ash did but is putting together arguably equal or worse results.

ChicagoJaysFan - Wednesday, May 14 2008 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#185267) #
JP has been given far more money to win then Gord Ash did but is putting together arguably equal or worse results.

That is completely misleading.  JP has had more to spend if you don't adjust for inflation, but not if you take into consideration market growth rates.  I'm not saying JP is perfect, nor even that he's necessarily the right man for the job, but if you're going to criticize him, do it for something that he's actually been guilty of.

Many articles have been written on it, so I'm not going to rephrase what others have said, but here's Blair's piece on it.

AYJackson, that is actually word for word what JP said on the post-game show tonight. Nice call.
