A 3-1 night in the minors.

Buffalo 2 at Syracuse 3:  Bill Murphy - 7 innings, 2 runs, 4 walks, 9 Ks.  The Chiefs had 14 singles and no XBHs.  Joe Inglett is batting .412 on the year in AAA.

New Hampshire 5 at Portland 4
:  Brett Cecil - 4.2 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 BB, 4Ks.  Good improvement after a shaky 1st AA outing.  David Smith made his first AA start in 2008 and went 2-5 with a 2B.

Dunedin 9 at Vero Beach 4:  Benetiz picked up the win with a scoreless inning in his first appearance in several weeks.  Pettway threw two scoreless in his Dunedin pitching debut.  Brian Dopriak went 2-3 with a HR.

Beloit 4 at Lansing 2
:  Magnuson - 3 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 4 BBs, 2 Ks.  Jackson and Ahrens each continue to hit., each with a single (Jackson also had a SB and BB).  Both are much further ahead than I think most could have anticipated at this point.

How long do things continue before we have a #1 prospect?  A month from now, if Cecil is dominating AA, while Snider is still working out his swing, I think Cecil has to move to the top of the list.

The Luggies are playing a morning game. Mark Rzepczynski had a solid first outing of the season, going 4.2 innings and allowing 1 run with no walks and 4 strikeouts.

Justin Jackson's improvement is great news for the organization.  Obviously, the K rate will have to improve for him to be a good major league hitter but with his defensive abilities, average is good enough.

If we give Cecil a mulligan for his first six batters in AA, he's got a nice line going:

2 GS, 7.2 IP, 3H, 3W, 8K, 1ER

Just having fun looking at some of the minor league stats.  Always fun seeing the low level stats as they get silly.

Lansing...
Edgar Estanga: 22 years old, 3-0 (nothing weird yet) 20 1/3 IP, 11 (!) hits, 3 walks, 20 strikeouts and 1 run allowed.  Yup, just one for an ERA (and RA) of 0.45  Sweet.
There are also 3 other pitchers in Lansing with ERA's below 2 and 10+ IP...
Kyle Ginley: 36 1/3 IP, 1.25 ERA over 6 starts (21 years old)
Randy Boone: 28 1/3 IP, 1.61 ERA (23 years old)
Ross Buckwalter: 14 IP, 1.93 ERA (23 years old)
Nice eh?

Dunedin sub 2 ERA + 10 IP...
Brandon Camardese: 0.75 over 12 1/3 IP, 24 years old
Brett Cecil: 1.80 over 10 1/3 IP, 21 years old
Celson Polanco: 1.40 over 19 2/3 IP, 23 years old

AA only has Seth Overbey: 1.20 over 15 1/3 IP, but with 2 unearned runs his RA is 2.40 (24 years old)

AAA though has...
Davis Romero: 1.47 over 18 2/3 IP, 25 years old
David Purcey: 1.85 over 39 IP, 26 years old (older than I thought)
and Shawn Camp: 0.00 over 10 IP with 4 hits, 0 walks, 13 strikeouts - no wonder he is here now at age 32.

Lansing has 6 hitters under 20 years old but the scary hitter is their 23 year old DH Manuel Rodriguez - 421-436-671.  His previous high for OBP is 326 and he has never slugged 500 so I doubt this is for real, but nice start eh?

Fun stuff.  Gotta love Baseball Reference's minor league summaries for hitting and pitching.

John, Zach Dials doesn't match your criteria for a specific org level, but he has 12 2/3 IP has a 1.46 ERA across Dunedin (8 IP and 1.12 ERA) and New Hampshire (4 2/3 IP and 1.93 ERA).

He's 22 and has gone 14 K in 53 BF against 3 BB and 10 hits.

After slow starts, Tolisano and Ahrens have also begun to assert themselves in Lansing. In their last 10 games, they have posted OPS' of 1.004 and 8.15 pushing their season numbers up to 0.768 and 0.799 respectively. While each of Jackson, Tolisano and Ahrens must improve their strike out rates per PA (25%, 20%, 22%) to succeed at higher levels, all three are showing signs of patience with what I would consider promising walk rates for 19 year olds (14%, 14%, 13%) in their first exposure to full season ball.

Of course, I meant to say that Ahrens had posted an OPS of 0.815 in his last 10 games and not 8.15 - that would be a remarkable if entirely impossible accomplishment.

In yesterday's minor league thread, someone mentioned Calderon being called up to Dunedin with no word of a replacement. Looks like this could provide a position switch for Raul Barron who's had a solid start but lacks a position to play everyday in the stacked Lansing infield. I'm not sure how Barron's defense is on the infield, but he got the start today in center.

Mike, did you play for the Bruins?
