The writers and posters at Batter's Box are among the biggest Blue Jays fans around. But just how well have you all been paying attention over the years, hmm?

Don't forget to state each answer in the form of an answer.

1. This one's easy. Everyone's going to get this one. Complete the lyric:

Bring on the White Sox
Bring on the BoSox
Bring on the Brewers
The Rangers and the Yankees too
We'll beat the Indians
We'll beat the Tigers
We'll beat

The thing I like about it is that, coincidentally, it works just as well today as it did when it was first written.

1b. Name the lead singer of the aforementioned song, and his three CanCon hits of the 1970s.

2. What player for the 1995 Blue Jays was pictured in the 1977 Blue Jays media guide? (I should admit that I have not seen this picture and only know of it by hearsay.)

3. What Jays player had a butterfly ride on his shoulder for part of a game late in the 2002 season?

3b. What did he name the butterfly?

4. Complete the lyric:

You can tell the 'Spos
The Cards and Astros
You can even tell La Russa's crew
You can tell the Reds
Our Blue Jays are the best
And set to win it all in '92

We got a guy named Dave
And fans who love to rave
Even a pitcher called the Cone
In the outfield, a Candy
Got a Carter who's a dandy
And Devo leads us off to set the tone

Chorus:
But don't tell the Braves
The Atlanta Braves
Our Jays will make their team a flop
'Cause when it comes to Braves
The Atlanta Braves

5. According to Joe Schultz, how do you pitch to Buck Martinez?

6. Complete the lyric:

Zosky the shortstop
If his bad knee doesn't sag
And B.J. Bird will platoon at third

I'm gonna guess that Ed Sprague is the answer to #6. And I'm also gonna guess that the answer to #5 is "You don't"

Was it Mike Maksudian that had the butterfly? (#3a)

Matthew E - Sunday, April 13 2008 @ 04:27 PM EDT (#182645) #
Sprague isn't the complete answer, but as you so astutely figured, he does provide the rhyme. Not Maksudian, and Schultz said something quite different.

I originally thought the Buck Martinez question was part of the memorable Schultz-isms of Ball Four.  If it was, the answer is either "smoke him inside" or "smoke him down low", along with the promise of pounding some Buds after you get him out.

Of course, Google tells me that you've asked this question before, and the answer is "we'll just zitz him."  Schultz apparently wasn't the Greg Maddux of his day.

1. The A's so bad, we make Billy blue.

3. O-Dawg

4. They're gonna get chopped?

Matthew E - Sunday, April 13 2008 @ 06:06 PM EDT (#182650) #
6-4-3: Did I really? Oops. I suspect this is not atypical of me. Anyway, that's it.

Zao:

1. Yup.
3. Yup.
4. Well, that's the rhyme...

#2 is a trick question, because there was hardly a 1995 Blue Jays team. I'll guess Lance Parrish.

#6 : "Anyone but Ed Sprague."
Matthew E - Sunday, April 13 2008 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#182667) #
Parrish is a logical guess, as he reached the majors with the Tigers that year, but I've never heard that he was pictured in the Jays' media guide of '77. He's not the guy I have in mind. (Of course, if someone actually has a copy of it, and finds a picture of Parrish there, maybe from a Tigers-Jays spring training game, then that's different.)

And that's not the lyric.

Man, this one dates me...

Keith Hampshire is the singer (with the Batboys) and his three 70's hits were:  Daytime, Night-Time; The First Cut is the Deepest and Big Time Operator.

Other than the cover shot of the city, the 1977 Blue Jays media guide did not have any pictures, so I'm not sure what the story is with that question.
Matthew E - Monday, April 14 2008 @ 07:10 AM EDT (#182677) #
Correct on Keith Hampshire.

But if your information about the '77 media guide is accurate, and I have no reason to doubt you, then what's with that story I heard? Goes like this, and I'll leave it to someone else to fill in the last detail or two: I think it was Jerry Howarth who was talking about a picture of Rico Carty signing autographs for a couple of kids in spring training. This happened before a Jays-Rangers game, and the kids were actually the sons of one of the Rangers' players... Oh, well. If it isn't true it should be.

Apropos of nothing, in 200 years people are going to wonder about an encyclopedia named Funk and Wagnalls.  Was it some kind of bizarre marketing ploy to attract both the hip and the nerdy?
Simon - Monday, April 14 2008 @ 12:25 PM EDT (#182693) #
You'd be talking about Alomar, then - I'm positive Sandy was a Ranger.

You're right, Roberto Alomar appearing in the '77 media guide is too perfect not to believe.

Matthew E - Monday, April 14 2008 @ 12:46 PM EDT (#182698) #
Roberto Alomar is who I was thinking of.

I wonder how Funk found time to write a dictionary, what with all his duties as the Kansas City Royals' pitching coach. Wagnall must have done the heavy lifting.

You'd be talking about Alomar, then - I'm positive Sandy was a Ranger.

Well, yes -- for about 10 minutes (I exaggerate only for effect) back in 2005. I had to look it up to be sure I even remembered that right!

Daddy, Sandy Sr., spent his final two big league seasons in Arlington, too.

Okay, this one seems to have peted out. The complete answers:

1. "We'll beat the A's so bad, gonna make Billy blue". At the time, of course, 'Billy' was manager Billy Martin. (Zao got this one.)

1b. Keith Hampshire, and his hits were 'Daytime, Nighttime', 'Big Time Operator' and 'The First Cut Is the Deepest'. (kinguy got this one.)

2. Roberto Alomar, or maybe not (see kinguy's refutation).

3. Orlando Hudson. (Zao got this one.)

3b. Kelsey.

4. "Our Domers are better than their Chop." This was a song by some radio station in Kitchener or someplace; it got some airplay on FAN 590.

5. You just zitz him. (6-4-3 got this one.)

6. "Sojo, Coles and Sprague". This was a song by the FAN 590 morning crew at the time, which I think included Bob McCown.

Well, the Buck/Ball Four story just reminded me of a related question. No looking this one up in the book:

Moneyball opens with a 60-yard-dash among five hotshot Southern California prospects. Three of them never made the majors. Billy Beane was one of the ones who did; who was the other?
