Turns out Matt Stairs' hip injury is worse than first thought and he is now out for the season. As a result the Jays signed Barry Bonds as a replacement.

Bonds contract is a one year deal for $5 million, with bonuses of $1 million for every 100 plate appearances he has.

Happy April Fool's Day!

Forgot what day it was today, had me excited there for a bit, good one.

I'm afraid I fell for it. Also forgot what day it was.

Would have given us something to talk about given tonight's game will probably be a no-go.

I was also fooled. I was on my way to add Bonds to my fantasy team, before i stopped myself and checked for the April fools punchline.

I've never met Pistol, but I've decided I hate him.  I still have butterflies in my stomach after reading that headline.  Cruel trick.  Well done.

I believed the headline until I read the Bonds part. If you just wrote "Stairs out for the year", I would have fell for it. There's no way the Jays sign Bonds.

Fell for it for a split second then went 'not a hope' and 'April 1st'. Good one though. JP is known for misdirection, Stairs is hurting, Bonds is a left handed hitting free agent. Excellent job.

I knew what day it was, but I still would have fell for it if it was Stairs out for the season only. We'll never sign Bonds, no matter how much sense it makes.

And Lloyd Moseby and George Bell will take over as manager and bench coach; Tom Henke is making a comeback to fill in for B.J. following a successful surgery; and due to a review of scoring errors in 1998, it has been determined that the Jays won the Wild Card and the playoffs will be replayed.

Heh, excellent job.

The headline gave me a palpable -- and unpleasant -- feeling in my gut before I caught on... I guess it's a bit old-fashioned or idealistic or whatnot, but I think I'd rather feel good about cheering for an 85 win team than queasy about cheering for a 90+ win team.

My reaction was "O Nuts!" (Stairs) then "You've got to be kidding me" (Bonds signed) then "Hey, this is a link to a page on April Fools Day"...

Nice job.

So not cool. I just made an ass of myself in the library here. Luckily I noticed it was an April fools joke before my radio show on the campus station this afternoon.

Brilliant stuff.
Like many others, I fell for the Stairs thing, but Bonds tipped me off.
I just wanted to say You guys are gods.
I was so impressed with the help everyone provided Dez for the best place to watch the game and to Samir for the links to TV/radio stuff.
Here's another possibility for sports you probably can't find anywhere else. http://stadeo.tv/vod2/
I watched most of the baseball World Cup and the video was surprisingly good.
I just wanted to add a thought about the 2008 Jays and their chances.
I don't think it matters much who's hot and who's not, if the Jays are going to ignore baseball fundamentals like hitting behind the runner and giving yourself up to get that guy in from third.
The teams which win are exactly that teams, while the Jays of the past few seasons have seemed, to me, like a collection of individuals.
I can hardly wait for the day we can replace Mr. 600 with a productive, team-oriented DH.

I think if we get to the point where our team doesn't need a 125 OPS+ hitter, we're on our way to the World Series without needing to play the 162.  The Red Sox had one guy that was clearly better than Thomas last year and the Yanks and Tigers had two.  Those were the top 3 teams in the AL in runs scored last year.  For comparison at the DH spot, Thomas was clearly outdone by Big Papi, played about as well as Ramirez, and outhit Giambi (and was healthier).

I think when your DH is hitting well enough to be mentioned with guys like Manny Ramirez, Grady Sizemore, Gary Sheffield, and Torii Hunter, you need to look elsewhere to improve your team.

I almost believed this except i saw the stairs to return Wednesday headline on the Jays website first. O well, a nice dream and a good prank.

I guess being the second best (arguably best) regular hitter on your team last year doesn't get you what it used to.

RE: Bonds... The more I look at this, the more I realize that it isn't such a bad deal for the Jays... I think they should do it. They would definitely jump right into a 3-way wash with the Yank$ and $ox... if one is going to spend $100M to possibly finish 3rd, why not spend another $10M to guaranty being in the mix ?... at least J.P. and Godfrey should sit down with Bonds and figure out whether it's a fit. They would be remiss if they didn't.

There's no way the Jays sign Bonds.

Every GM with a need for offense, and any kind of a clue, should be making a major effort to sign Bonds. This is doubly true for GMs of AL teams, assuming Barry wants to extend his career badly enough that he's willing to DH. Unfortunately, while JP definitely has the need for offense...
