We don't often devote a whole thread here on Batter's Box to a single article published on another site, but if you have not yet read Tom Friend's From San Diego's favorite son ... to spoilsport for ESPN: The Magazine (and available free on ESPN.com), please do so.

It's long -- more than 4,500 words -- but truly a masterpiece, compellingly telling the story of one at-bat that took 15 years to set up. So read it, then come back here and tell us what you think.

What a wonderful piece. It's an example of everything that a great sports story can be -- insightful, dramatic, lingering in its effect. It expands one moment until it gives us a glimpse into a whole world, an entire way of life. Truly special. Thanks for the read.

Wow. I had just read that on ESPN and was about to make a post here about it. I don't post often, but I thought the article was just too well written to not share. Imagine my surprise when I saw there was a thread dedicated to it. One of the best articles I've ever read on ESPN.

I read this last night and was just eating it up. What a great story. I now have a soft spot for Little T. I hope he beats out Mike Cameron to start.

It was a great, fun article to read. The type of stuff that many fans love to see. Players who care about each other, owners who care, and even the fans being involved.

Gwynn Jr may not be a great player (61 OPS+ over 215 PA's in the majors so far, 272/348/344 lifetime in the minors over 2088 PA's) but you can't help but cheer him (and Hoffman) on now.

I remember back in the 80's/90's when I was far deeper into the game (trust me, getting married switches priorities) I'd pick players for various reasons to follow and cheer on. Nice to have a new guy to follow now that nearly all of the guys I used to cheer on are retired.

Thanks for the link.  This is an example of why this is really the only site I need as a Blue Jays and a baseball fan.
