At this writing, our two polls (see left side of this page) show Bauxites believe the Red Sox will win the World Series, but they are heavily rooting for the Rockies -- early on, even "Don't care either way" is outpacing the Sox vote.

Write whatever Series thoughts you have here, but let's start with a "fun" question/prediction. Who will win the 2007 World Series MVP? Will it be a big name like Beckett, Ramirez, Holliday or Helton? Or some lesser light, in the line of past winners like Bucky Dent, Steve Yeager and David Eckstein?

The first correct prediction will win a retro Batter's Box NO-PRIZE. Serve it up!

I just noted that three of the last seven World Series MVPs -- Schilling, Beckett, Ramirez -- all currently play for Boston. If the Red Sox win, it could be any of those guys for a second time (would Schill or Beckett be the first to win it with two different teams?) but I'm rooting for COL and therefore say the 2007 World Series MVP will be ... Manny Corpas!

My prediction is Troy Tulowitzki because he's a gamer and he plays it the right way.  Gotta root for the Rox over the Evil Empire II, even though the Jays will probably have to be Evil III to win the Division.

Damn Red Sox...may Manny Ramirez playing Left field cost them at least one game in ginormous Coors Field. But I'm hoping for an interesting world series either way.

I'll pick Todd Helton as my MVP pick, facing the team that he was nearly traded to, if pre-season reports were to be believed.

Also, the game last night featured the worst 3rd base coach blunder I can remember, when Lofton was held at third, keeping it a 3-2 game, and changing the pen usage and outlook of the game completely. Lofton might've scored once he stopped and looked back, and almost seemed tempted to try. So with the 3rd base coach and Lofton (who should've just run through the stop sign) wearing the goat horns right now, in honour of that play (and "Detroit pitching staff unable to throw to first base" wearing them from last year), I'll guess that the goat of the series will be Boston's bullpen.

I'll take the obvious choice, Manny Ramirez, before anyone else does. I really want that no-prize!

Dustin Pedroia will have a few clutch hits and  be crowned the next David Eckstein.

I don't like the Red Sox (they've already won their WS this century) but I really don't want the Rockies to win. I really dislike Wild Card teams winning the World Series, I've seen that story too often this past decade.

So on theme of seeing the same old song too often, Ortiz, MVP, with a walk-off HR or two.

I'll vote with my heart instead of my head: Jeff Francis is your World Series MVP (and ace of Team Canada in the next World Baseball Classic)

Yorvit Torrealba is your 'Series MVP as the Rox sweep the Sox
Mylegacy - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 02:56 PM EDT (#175419) #

Press Release following Rockies surprise seventh game stunner over the hapless Beantowners:

"Yorvit 'Tiger' Torrealba has been named the 2008 World Series MVP following his game, and series, winning grand slam home run in the ninth inning of game seven at Boston, November 1st. Over the series 'Tiger' hit 299/367/608 with five home runs and 13 RBI's. Yorvit becomes the first catcher to win the MVP in the World Series since Toronto's Pat Borders in 1992."

.....continued on page 32B.

So with the 3rd base coach and Lofton (who should've just run through the stop sign)

Completely unfair to Lofton. The amount of blame he deserves on that play is minimal, if anything. The blame should be put firmly where it has been by most people, entirely upon Skinner's shoulders. He had the whole play in front him and he's the one who made the boneheaded decision. Once the ball hit the wall it was behind Lofton's vision and it's not the runner's job to watch the ball anyway. Once it was into the outfield he was, as he should have been, running hard and watching his third base coach. It probably wouldn't have made a difference, but Cleveland's chance of winning that game ended with Skinner's move and Blake's subsequent double play.

Kevin Youkilis, unfortunately.

Mylegacy - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 02:59 PM EDT (#175421) #

DepecheJay I SWEAR your post was not up when I just made mine! Brian W's was the last post when I started writing mine...I had to check the year Pat won, I couldn't remember if it was 92 or 93 and I had to check the date game 7 would be on....

DJ...either great minds think alike or idiots seldem differ!

Mick Doherty - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 03:02 PM EDT (#175422) #
That's okay, Mylegacy, you have Torrealba winning the award next year, anyway ... :-)
AWeb - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 03:12 PM EDT (#175423) #
Completely unfair to Lofton. The amount of blame he deserves on that play is minimal, if anything.

Yeah, I probably didn't make that clear enough, blame is 95%-5% on Skinner at least. It's just that one of the replays Fox showed seemed to show Lofton following the ball, getting a good jump, and looking out towards Ramirez...stop sign or no, you could tell Lofton knew he would score there, and immediately regretted stopping.  The one replay Fox showed where the ball was 15 feet or more from Ramirez (and not moving toward him quickly)  when Lofton reached third was pretty damning of Skinner, since it was what he should have seen as well. Brain fart at the worst possible time.

Y'know, if the Sox win they will be the first team with two WS titles in the 00's.

00-Yankees
01-Diamondbacks
02-Angels
03-Marlins
04-Red Sox
05-White Sox
06-Cardinals
07-Rockies or Red Sox

Seems funny after the 90's where we had the Jays with 2 and the Yankees with 3 to go with the Reds/Twins (2nd title in 5 years)/Atlanta/Marlins (first of 2 in 7 years).

The 80's were similiar to this decade with Philly/LA/Cardinals/Orioles/Tigers/Royals/Mets/Twins/LA/A's - only LA getting 2 titles with a big spread between them (81 and 88).

The 70's were a dynasty decade - Orioles/Pirates/A's 3 times/Reds twice/Yankees twice/Pirates for the second time. Just the Orioles had a single title and they went more than once to the big show.

60's? A few two timers plus one shots - Pirates/Yankees (2)/Dodgers/Cardinals/Dodgers/Orioles/Cardinals/Tigers/Mets. So Cards, Dodgers, Yankees 2 each plus Pirates/Orioles/Tigers/Mets.

50's? Yankees 6 times, Dodgers 2, NY Giants & Milwaukee - just two titles outside of NY, ugh.

Seems like baseball lately has alternated decades. 50's/70's/90's are dynasty decades while the 60's/80's/00's are come one come all (60's are close to dynasty while 90's are close to non-dynasty but still...)

So for the 2010's lets hope the Jays put it all together and give us another 2 or 3 titles in a row or we'll be sitting back thinking about how we were lucky enough to see their wins back in the old days of the early 90's. Still beats the Leafs who haven't won in my lifetime though (won for the last time the year my parents met).

Hmm... who are the teams likely to be the 2 or 3 dynasties in the 10's? Red Sox look likely, Milwaukee is putting together a killer young team in a weak division.

I guess I will be the first to take Kaz Matsui for WS MVP
kinguy - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 05:13 PM EDT (#175428) #
Much as I'd like to see the Rox win, I think their mojo has cooled out with the layoff, so Sox in 6 and Mike Lowell as WS MVP.

I'll go the the Rockies hitter, Hawpe.

Aaron Cook, in one of the most dramatic DL comebacks ever, wins 2 games to take the MVP.

(here's hoping he starts 2 games, I'm too lazy to check)
zeppelinkm - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 08:38 PM EDT (#175434) #
Hmmm, I'll go with Garrett Atkins as he breaks out of his slump in a most wonderful way.  Really, I just want the Rockies to win!
scottt - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 10:13 PM EDT (#175436) #
I have trouble seeing a pitcher win the MVP at Coors Field.

Schilling and Becket haven't thrown a pitch there since 2004. Is that right?

I'm curious to see the Red Sox lineup at Colorado. Ortiz has bad knees and Youkilis has been hitting well.

Colorado had a good series at Fenway this year. I'd really like to see them set a mark with 8 straight post-season wins.

ANationalAcrobat - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 10:41 PM EDT (#175437) #
To be filed under kind of sad: Eric Hinske has had one at bat all postseason. Atlhough I suppose that if Eric Hinske is getting significant ABs, you're probably not a World Series team.

Series Predictions:

The Magic runs out -- Sox in 4. An absolute romping!

Lester starts game 4 and shines.

Ortiz benched after seen playing first base in Colorado.

At least one game in Colorado looks like a football score.

Schilling annoys me in a way that's soul destroying.

Barry Manilow sings Sweet Caroline live in one of the games at Fenway in the 8th. (just kidding)

Games are boring, boring, boring.

JD Drew does nothing to endear himself to anyone.

Manny is Manny

Lowell wins the MVP and grins a lot.

Geoff - Tuesday, October 23 2007 @ 12:47 AM EDT (#175440) #
I'll pick the guy who was the golden boy coming into the season, and perhaps the one going out, Daisuke.

I can't believe nobody has taken my pick yet... Matt Holliday for MVP.

Two people took Yorvit Torrealba before anyone took Holliday. That's a good thing, I think... =)

If Holliday wins any games with bad slides and wins the MVP, my head will blow up.

But the... calls... even out... ah never mind!

I'm actually posting more to ask if others are having trouble replying to a post rather than to a thread?

Dustin Pedroia (because he's the only good player not picked yet), and because the voters love little guys that remind them of David Eckstein.
FisherCat - Tuesday, October 23 2007 @ 11:54 AM EDT (#175454) #

I don't believe he's been posted yet, but Papelbon is my choice for W.S. MVP (3 saves in 10-9; 9-6; 14-11 games!) LOL.

It sure is funny being born and raised in Boston watching how in a few short years the Red Sox have gone from sports darlings to the new "Evil Empire".

Although I'm pulling for my home town team, I'd be happy if the Rockies kept the non-repeat winner streak going.

Don't be alarmed, I'm still a die-hard Jays fan.

P.S.  I hope JP has some surprises up his sleeve for the Hot-Stove season!!!!

NashvilleSounds - Wednesday, October 24 2007 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#175480) #
Firstly, my prediction...  The Stones in 5

1) Beckett will shut 'em down after the 8 day layoff.  The Sox shelled pretty much the only lefty they saw in the Indians series.  Sox 8-0.

2) The Rockies bats awaken against Schilling who's lost a step even after all of his infamous post-season success.  Rockies 8-6.

3) Coors proves unventful for the Sox.  Manny botches 2 plays in left, and Big Papi proves ineffective at first. Matsuzaka gets crushed, as his stuff proves ineffective in the mile high atmosphere.  Fogg continues his moster-killing ways.  Rockies 9-3.

4) Lester throw a heck of a game and Cook even after his long layoff induces a lot of groundballs that the defense gobbles up. Rockies 3-2.

5) Beckett get them the first time around, but the Rockies are ready for at home.  The Sox play lousy defense again, and suffer from not being able to DH.  Rockies 10-8.

MVP: Brad Hawpe

DepecheJay - Thursday, October 25 2007 @ 12:32 PM EDT (#175514) #
Show me where the fun is in picking Matt Holliday and I'll pick the guy.  Mylegacy, that was great.  We should look into a northeastern chapter of the Yorvit 'Tiger' Torrealba fan club.  If you front it, I'm down.

Here's a sad thought...

Eric Hinske, 2007 World Series Champion.  It should have been with us...
