TSN.ca is reporting that that Tony LaCava has been promoted to Assistant General Manager.  LaCava's name has surfaced several times as a candidate for other general manager jobs.  With most GM jobs filled for next year the Jays have moved to promote LaCava.  The promotion would not likely stop LaCava from pursuing other GM opportunities.

It is not clear how this will change LaCava's day-to-day responsibilities.  Those details will likely come out by tomorrow.

Anyone know if this is JP's decision or Godfrey's? Either way, this has to put some pressure on JP - LaCava looks to be in a good position to step in for JP if things don't go well next year. The Jays don't have any other assistant GMs to they?

An excellent question, though I don't think anyone but the most insidery insider would know the true answer to that. However I don't think Godfrey would promote LaCava against Ricciardi's wishes.

I thought that was Alex Anthopoulos' job. Or he might only be the assistant "to" the GM, if there's even a difference. Anthopolous is right up there with George Stroumboulopouos as the coolest Greek names ever, although George definitely gets the edge because he would have qualified for the $1 tickets on Doug Mientkiewicz Day.

This piece by Blair answers some of the questions, including how his role will change and who the other assistants are.

It also seems to make clear that Ricciardi is all for this move.

Dunno if that was an intentional Office reference, but it made me smile anyways.

Here's an off-topic prediction that just occurred  to me: 2008 Oakland A's DH will be Troy Glaus. Billy Beane can get away with a player who has the steroid cloud over his head because A's fans will simply see it as another market inefficiency to exploit.
Greg - Thursday, October 18 2007 @ 01:27 AM EDT (#175345) #

Not to encourage getting off topic
But what exactly is Glaus' trade value?

I get the feeling it would be purely a salary dump, which I don't really see making sense for the Jays.  With what's available this off-season where are you going to spend that money more effectively?

And the Jays won't get away with it? You actually think Jays fans are going to boo Glaus and call in to radio shows to protest him playing for the Jays?

I guess that he wasn't, but I always considered LaCava to be the #2 guy in the organization prior to yesterday.

The A's have a DH who makes the minimum and may be better, Jack Cust.

Of course Glaus is going to be booed, and Wilner will get more than a few calls about him as well.

The dude did play as much in the OF last season as he did at DH...

Just got thinking about the Jays system (seeing a scouting guy promoted will do that) and noticed at B-R that the Jays even had a 16 year old going last year.

Jose Vargas: 3.12 ERA 10 BB 38 K 1 HR in 40 2/3 IP for the DSL Jays #2. Wow. It might be as low as you get in the minors but at 16 to have ratios like that is impressive. Hope they are teaching him English quickly.

Kind of miss the days when even 14 year olds would be in the system though (remember Jimy Kelly?)

Jamey Newberg reports on a former Jay:

The Rangers have outrighted catcher Guillermo Quiroz off of the 40-man roster, reducing the roster to 39 players.  Quiroz has declined the assignment, opting instead for free agency.

Not sure where to post this, but Joe Torre just rejected a one year contract offer from the  Yanks brass and will no longer be the coach of the Yankees.  I know this was already greatly rumoured to be happening it's still a shock to actually see it happen.

Should be interesting to see whose names appear in relation to the vacant Yankees post.

Glaus will get booed if he struggles for any length of time. If he gets off to a hot start and is relatively consistent then no way he gets booed.

Much of that was because of Piazza being on the roster and because of the numerous injuries to the outfielders. With Piazza gone, Cust figures to become the DH.

And as a defensive outfielder, Cust is a heck of a designated hitter.

According to Jamie Campbell latest column, the Blue Jays will be wearing throwback baby blue jerseys at their Flashback Friday games in '08.

According to CBS,  One of the priorities for the Jays this offseason is to sign a veteran catcher to be the backup to switch-hitting Gregg Zaun.

Apparently anybody but Barajas
"Yeah we're looking for a veteran backup guy, but I think we're going in a different direction there," GM J.P. Ricciardi said diplomatically.

Personally, I like Ramon Castro. He can hit--even right handed pitching--and he's not getting the at-bats behind Paul Loduca.

Who do you guys like?
R Billie - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 12:23 AM EDT (#175400) #

Castro seems the obvious choice but given the demand for decent catchers there's going to be competition for him.  Plus his .887 ops seems well out of line with his career .723 ops and the marks of .756 and .711 the two years before.  Also a .310 career OBP (.321, .322, .331 last 3 years).  I'm pretty sure he'll be overpriced.

I like the idea of looking at Barrett.  Given his recent struggles and bad press he could come at a good price on a one year deal.  He's 31 years old and in 2005/2006 put up .824 and .885 ops.  Although catchers tend to hit the wall pretty definitively, one would think he's not completely done at 31.

I think both Castro and Barrett carry their risks but Barrett has the higher ceiling I think, especially for the price.

I like the idea of looking at Barrett.

Really? That seems like buying a big box of trouble.
Excalabur - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 08:50 AM EDT (#175403) #
Argh.  Where the hell do all the catching prospects play if we sign another catcher to backup Zaun?  The way I count it, Thigpen's gotta be in the MLB so that Diaz can be at AAA and the rest of them can all move up a level.

Confused I am by this development.  I don't like any of the free agent catchers more than Thigpen.

NashvilleSounds - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 09:36 AM EDT (#175404) #
I agree.  It's almost like a dog chasing its tail around.  Eventually you're going to have to play the kid to see if he can stick.  My only thought is that they want to give him more seasoning or work on defense, but at some point he's got to take his licks and learn on the job.  I think the Jays would be better off saving that $1-6 mil on a backup catcher and invest it elsewhere.

Didn't JP already learn from the Ohka/Thomson signings?

If the cash is burning a hole in your pocket take a chance on a young talent with upside like Porcello in the draft and quit signing dead-weight.

R Billie - Monday, October 22 2007 @ 04:51 PM EDT (#175426) #

Really? That seems like buying a big box of trouble.

True.  But one also assumes that would get you a pretty good price.  If he's a part time player coming into a new league and a new situation, maybe that helps him.  He was a good hitter a year ago.  I can't help but wonder how much of his problems have been exacerbated by his struggles at the plate.  He has upside and if you're going to spend on an experienced #2 I'd rather have the upside that could turn into something than the generic MLB average catcher.

I do like Thigpen and I like Lind as well.  I'd like to see them both get major league playing time next year.  If the team has its heart set on contention though then I can also understand the reluctance to press them into the lineup without having established themselves.  Thigpen couldn't seem to get a swing going with any oomph and Lind couldn't lay off of bad pitches.

Barrett had 344 at-bats and made $4,533,333 this year.

I don't see him looking for a backup job.
R Billie - Tuesday, October 23 2007 @ 01:00 AM EDT (#175441) #

Regardless of what Barrett made, he's also coming off a season where he put up a 68 OPS+ and got plenty of bad press related to his personality conflicts on the Cubs.

It's probable he will be looking for a starting job but the terms will probably not be what he's used to, at least for one year.

Barrett is terrible at throwing out runners. A Barrett/Zaun combination would be a nightmare for Halladay, Burnett, & McGowan.

Travis Snider and Ryan Patterson play well in a Scottsdale win.
R Billie - Tuesday, October 23 2007 @ 05:11 PM EDT (#175465) #

I don't mind if they're terrible at throwing out runners again.  It's not like the trio of Halladay, Burnett, and McGowan have problems preventing runs.  It's much more likely those three pitchers would be a nightmare for the average catcher.  You can spend time and resources looking for a catcher with a cannon arm and superb release but I think that will be an effort which won't produce much in the way of team improvement.

The offence out of catchers that were not the second half Greg Zaun was awful.  A healthy Zaun plus a rejuvenated Barrett could really turn things around in that respect without putting pressure on younger guys like Thigpen and Diaz to be good right away.

You could also look at Castro but I have a feeling that 2007 is not likely his typical hitting year and he's been consistently a part time player.  Barret had a period of 3 straight years for the Cubs as an everyday catcher (2004-2006) putting up an OPS of at least .820 each year.

Didn't JP already learn from the Ohka/Thomson signings?

Nothing was really learned. Both had relatively high chance of failure, small chance of success but cost nothing. Arguments can be made for the length of time they were given to succeed and the management of Zambrano, but it never hurts to increase your chance of success for free.
