Auburn took the opening game of their 3 game set with Brooklyn by a 7-1 score.

Chi Cheng got the start for the Doubledays, and gave up a run on a walk, a single, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly in the second. A key strikeout limited the damage. Kyle Walter came on in the third and went 5 scoreless innings to give Auburn a chance to come back, but it took awhile. Auburn loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of second, but came up empty after a strikeout and a ground-out . Brooklyn starter Dillon Gee settled down and at one point struck out six straight Auburn hitters in the middle innings before coming out after 5 innings. In the bottom of the sixth, Adam Calderone doubled, stole third and came home on Manny Rodriguez' single to tie the game at 1. Brad Emaus followed with a 2 run rip, his 3rd homer of the post-season. Robert Leffler came on for Auburn in the eighth, and struck out the side around a single and a walk. The Doubledays then blew the game open in the bottom of the eighth as Brooklyn reliever William Morgan struggled for his control, plunking one, walking three and throwing two wild pitches. Luis Sanchez' bases loaded walk drove in one and Ben Zeskind followed with a 2 run single to make it a 4 run frame. Lefty Cody Crowell came on to retire the side, while striking out two, in the top of the ninth.

The teams travel to Brooklyn for Game 2. Brett Cecil is the scheduled starter for Auburn, and if a third game is necessary, Mark Rzepczynski will likely get the ball.

Leffler, wow. Cecil, wow, wow. Rzepcynski, WOWSKI!

These are three very fine pitchers. Is big-R-ski Roger Clemens/Nolan Ryan or is it just that he does a great impression?

Since Rzep and Cecil are 22 and 21, respectively, is there a chance that one or both proceed to Dunedin next year and bypass Lansing??  Do the Jays ever skipover low A with their college kids?

Perhaps they will skip A ball all together and follow Gary Cathcart to AA New Hampshire. Seems lke he is next in line to manage that club.

Don't count Ken Joyce out of the running to manage the New Hampshire club just yet.

Great game by the Doubledays last night.  I caught an inning or two through the internet.

Yes.  Cecil almost certainly will be in Dunedin next year.  Rzep is probably better than 50/50 to go there as well.

If someone is interested in a BBRadio "broadcast" of Game 2, that might be fun.  And for any NYC Bauxites, a trip down to see Brett Cecil in the playoffs might be cool.

It is obvious that Cathcart is the choice. They kept his team intact this year and gave him a chance to win. NH hit under Joyce and did not under Cathcart. Put the two of them together and win at AA!

The lead-off hitter for Brooklyn homered and that is the only run through three innings.

Top 5 - JP Arencibia hit a 2 run home run to put Auburn up 2-1

Top 6 - 2 run home run by Darin Mastroianni, 4-1 Auburn.  Cecil has pitched six innings so far.

Still 4-1 Auburn after 7.  Cecil has pitched through seven innings.  Since the first inning Cecil has allowed two baserunners, a walk and a single, both of whom were thrown out trying to steal by Arencibia.

...and Cecil has 8 Ks and a 10/1 GO/AO. Wonderful.

Alan Farina pitches a scoreless eighth, 4-1 Auburn after 8.

Farina strikes out the side in the ninth, Auburn wins 4-1.

Congratulations to the Auburn Doubledays and manager Dennis Holmberg on their first league title.

Congratulations indeed.  Auburn pitching coach Antonio Caceres can take a bow, as well, as the Doubleday hurlers have had a superb season and playoffs.
