The Lugnuts were eliminated tonight, while the Doubledays warmed up for the playoffs with a couple of longballs.

We close out our Friday summaries with the hitters this week.  It has been a disappointing year for the hitters, with only Travis Snider shining and Yohermyn Chavez holding his own.

I was thinking they were holding Ginley back for the playoffs after missing his turn last Saturday but it appears he went on the DL some time after the start I saw in Lansing.  There was no indication there was something wrong with him in that start.

In the last game of the minor league regular season Auburn lost 4-3 to Jamestown in a meaningless game on Friday night.  Auburn start their playoff hunt Sunday.  In the first inning of Friday's game Adam Calderone and Manny Rodriguez went back to back with the home runs to make it a 2-0 game.  Drew Taylor made the spot start for Auburn and gave up three runs in three innings.  Leance Soto walked in the sixth, stole second, went to third on the overthrow and scored on a sac fly to tie the game.  But Jamestown came back with a run in the eighth off Ryan Bird to get the win.  Auburn have home field advantage for the playoffs.

The NYPL playoffs are underway tonight.  Auburn and Oneonta are scoreless after 7.  Brett Cecil pitched well for 5 innings.

I'm wondering where we should expect Yohermyn Chavez to start next season  My personal preference would be a full season in Lansing, like Snider just finished, but for a Latin prospect I think JP might be more apt to go the short season route again and plug him in at Auburn. What do you all expect? And where is he going to be on our post season top 10? My guess is BA will put him at #2 because of his age and the fact that he can hit for average and draw a walk but I might be drastically overrating him and the level of competition in the GCL.

Chavez is a strange one.  He succeeded at Pulaski at age 17, and instead of being promoted to Auburn, he was, if anything, set back to the GCL.  I would like to see him in Lansing to begin 2008.

As for his rating in the Batters' Box end of year prospect review, you'll just have to wait for another 3-4 weeks.  The voters and scribes are hard at work.

Jonathan Del Campo had a nice year too, but I can't remember a scouting report on him.  Anybody know anything about him.

As an aside to the Roster, could we have a category separate from Minor League Update for the various editions of the Prospect Reviews.  They are hard to find for reference.  They'd be easier if they were even under Draft.

CeeBee - Monday, September 10 2007 @ 07:58 PM EDT (#174147) #
I would also like to see Chavez in Lansing to start the season. I think the short season and rookie leagues can only do so much and after 2 seasons I think it's time to give him a full season go.
