It's a pitcher's week, and Marc Rzepczynski set the tone for the evening with an overpowering performance in Auburn. Adam Lind replied nicely for the hitters in the second game of a rare Chief double-dip sweep. The farm affiliates went 6-2.

The 2007 season would have to be considered a mildly disappointing one for the Jay pitching prospects. The top prospects going into the year, Ricky Romero and David Purcey, battled health problems. Jesse Litsch did progress, joined the big league rotation and held his own, but none of the other highly regarded pitching prospects at the higher levels, including Josh Banks, Kyle Yates and Brandon Magee, took a step forward. There was good news lower down in the system, as Adrian Martin and Nate Starner surprised, while 2007 draftees, Brett Cecil, Marc Rzepczynski, Brad Mills and Robert Leffler did well in their pro debuts.

Next week, we look at the hitters for the last time before our end-of-season prospect list.

Our GCL team seems to be loaded with talent, not just from this years draft. Is there any way we can get a fairly detailed scouting report on that team? From it's manager, a scout down there or some other sage?

Interesting that neither Fasano nor Diaz played today, despite the fact that it was a doubleheader. Why would Syracuse be carrying 4 catchers?
Mike Forbes - Friday, August 24 2007 @ 01:42 AM EDT (#173503) #
Both Fasano and Diaz are battling injuries.

Just on a side note regarding Lansing.  With their victory last night, they guaranteed themselves a playoff spot.  The most likely playoff opponent at this point is West Michigan which will be interesting because they had the brawl earlier this year and they actually end the season next weekend playing each other.

Chip Cannon is out for the season with wrist surgery.

RE: Previous discussion on Snider's speed and the number of triples... Last week I responded to comments on Snider's speed discounting his number of triples as an indicator of such citing Lugnut'sFan's observation regarding the outfield fence in Lansing. I located the original post and now realize that Snider may be faster than I envisaged based on LF's first hand observations. LF's original post follows... hopefully my reproducing this isn't contravening any established protocol...   Lugnut Fan - Monday, April 30 2007 @ 09:52 AM EDT (#166879) #

Snider is not walking, but he does have a very good eye at the plate.  He has Pettway hitting behind who is also off to a decent start, so Travis is getting some protection.  If there is one thing that he needs to improve on it is pitch recognition.  He gets fooled from time to time with off speed stuff, but other than that.

I also posted this previously, but I wouldn't worry about Sniders power numbers.  He is not going to hit high, majestic home runs.  He has a picture perfect level swing and drives the ball on a line.  When I say he drives it, I mean he drives it.  It seems like he hits everything on the sweet spot of the bat.  I haven't seen a player his age in this league adjust so well to wood.

Lansing has a 30 foot wall in right field which puts him at a disadvantage, but that is why he has so many triples.  His power numbers will not be there in Lansing I suspect, but he will be fine.  He hits the ball off the concrete in RF in Lansing and it richochets away from the outfielders.  By the time they pick it up, he is around second.  He has deceptive speed for as big as he is.  He has 15 to 20 stolen base potential.  The only major leaguer that I can think to compare him too is Kirk Gibson.

I thought that he would spend the majority, if not all of the season in Lansing, however the way he is tearing this league up right now, it is hard not to think that he will make a serious run at a mid-season promotion.

PS: Thanks to Lugnut Fan for his reports... much appreciated !
Lugnut Fan - Friday, August 24 2007 @ 02:43 PM EDT (#173536) #

Unfortunately due to my day job responsibilities, and my travel to Chicago to work three to four days a week, my time at the park has been severly limited this season.  Snider is faster that you would think he would be.  My comparison to Kirk Gibson may  not have been totally accurate, but he can hold his own.  The thing that Travis needs to work on is his base running and his jumps when he is called on to steal.  I don't think it is unreasonable for him to steal 10 to 15 bases a year on a consistent basis at the MLB level and potentially put together a 20/20 season at some point in his career.  He has to get better instincts for that all to happen however.

Thanks for the kind words.

Mike Green - Friday, August 24 2007 @ 08:30 PM EDT (#173551) #
Kevin Ahrens had a big game today, and Brett Cecil threw 4 sweet shutout innings.
timpinder - Saturday, August 25 2007 @ 08:39 AM EDT (#173554) #
Lind also had a good day, going 4 for 7 with another homer over the double-header.  His average is back above .300 again.  Having Lind in the lineup in September and beyond should help the Jays' offense against righties.
