Rangers win tonight after putting up a *30* spot on the Orioles. When I first saw the score on ESPN I thought it was a preseason football score. WOW.

The Rangers 8th and 9th hitters each have 7 RBIs.

That can't help the O's pythaogoras!

Pythagoras, just another Greek not doing the Orioles any favours.

The most runs by one team in a doubleheader is 43 in the NL and 36 in the AL.  Texas have a chance for two records in a day.

Funny, I was going to post a similar thread under the headline
Cowboys 30, Ravens 3

I had the game on the radio on the way home from work and it was, I think 13-3 or so when I got home. I turned on the TV again an hour later to see if the second game had started and it was 24-3 at that point, and they weren't done yet. The BAL pitching, primarily Eric Plunk, just looked horrible. (Didn't Plunk retire about seven years ago?)  The funny thing is. the swing-and-miss Rangers, while obviously not missing many today, struck out 11 or 12 times, too ...The TV guys said Plunk's line was two innings, six earned runs, five strikouts. How about that? The Rangers only scored in four innings -- so the BAL staff was pretty good more than half the time!

Wait a minute ... second game? That's right, the most runs ever scored in a modern era game came from the Rangers in the first game of a doubleheader. And yes, two of the first three hitters struck out.

The best part? Wes Littleton actually earned a save in this game by pitching the last 3.

And here come Texas again, up 3-0 after two in the second game.  That's 33 unanswered runs now.

I think you mean Paul Shuey, who was out of baseball from 2004-2006.

Wes Littleton actually earned a save in this game by pitching the last 3.

In fairness, it was only 14-3 when he came in to "protect" the lead. His teammates must have thought he needed more insurance.

The Rangers scored 10 runs in the 8th inning. Would that be considered a crooked number?

Random observations: The Rangers only scored in 4 different innings, with 16 runs in the last two. All the runs were earned, moving Baltimore's team ERA up 0.22, from a solid 7th at 4.39 to 10th at 4.61. 4 pitchers more or less equally absorbed the abuse, giving up 6, 7, 8, and 9 runs. Texas only hit 2 doubles in the game, but two grand slams and three 3-run homers turn out to add up quickly.

In other news, Webb's scoreless inning streak ended quickly with just one out recorded in the first on a Gabe Gross single, steal, groundball out, and single to plate him.

Pujols also hit a HR for the 5th staight game, as St. Louis makes a bid to defend their title after all. In a year where almost every team inspires a mighty yawn from me (every team aside from Tampa is on pace for between 65 and 97 wins), who are people cheering in case Toronto can't put together 30 wins in the last 36 games? Or is it too soon to ask?

I will root for any team that beats the Yankees for the wild card.

I'm also rooting for Cleveland because, well, it's Cleveland.  They could very well be the team that keeps the Yankees out, so it's win-win for me. :)

In the National League, I've been a Cub fan all my life (my mom's family is from Chicago), so I am keen to find out how they will blow it this year.

From ESPN.com, stat of the year:

The Rangers set a team record for runs scored in a doubleheader -- before the second game even started.

Did anyone else notice that Saltalamacchia scored 2 runs in the 6th AND 2 runs in the 8th?  Has anyone else ever scored two runs in the same inning TWICE in the same game?

That can't help the O's pythaogoras!

In one day, it went from 63-60 to 61-64.

Jayson Stark is going to have a field day with this game.

Man, that game was fun to watch. I started watching it because it was the only game on at the time, and it sort of became addictive as it went on. I know I was cheering for one more homer when the score got to 27-3. The Orioles' announcers didn't seem to get into the spirit of it all, however, oddly enough. The 8 and 9 hitters each drove in 7 runs - another gem of a stat that might have been a first.

Boy, it must have sucked to be a Baltimore baseball fan last night, 30-3 then losing a close one in the nightcap.

As to who to cheer on if/when the Jays are fully 100%, no doubt about it, mathematically eliminated... well... it dang well won't be Boston or the Yankees.

Seattle is always fun to cheer on, our expansion cousins. That is it in the AL for me unless the Twins or A's can pull off a miracle. I guess I'd go Angels next, then Tigers, then I'd hold my nose for Cleveland (that mascot is the most disgusting thing in MLB imo).

For the NL at the moment I'd rank it...
Arizona - always a good story there
Milwaukee - due to the Canadian GM team & Prince Fielder
San Diego - poor suckers, twice beaten up in the WS
Mets - just to bug the Yankees, plus Delgado/Green
Philadelphia - Gillick running the team we beat in 93
Cubs - just to come close, hate to end one of the few curses left
The rest of the NL west
St Louis & Atlanta I'd like to stay as far from the playoffs as possible.

Dang, lots of teams in eyeshot in the NL with 10 teams either in playoff slots or within 5 games vs the AL with just 6 teams in eyeshot of 4 playoff positions.

Arizona and Milwaukee would be my rooting interests in the NL, due to the presence of Hudson and Bush on their clubs.  I'm a big fan of Josh Byrnes.

who to cheer on if

Julio still needs a ring. He'll be back in Atlanta on September 1.

Apropos of nothing in particular, is anyone besides me wondering where the heck Alex Rios's home run power went?

Is this a delayed post home run derby effect, or some other malaise?

James W - Thursday, August 23 2007 @ 03:35 PM EDT (#173489) #
Bobby Abreu kind of went in the tank after his Home Run Derby, finally stopping his funk this season.  So perhaps the Derby did have an adverse effect on Rios.
AWeb - Thursday, August 23 2007 @ 03:40 PM EDT (#173491) #
Julio is covering his bases for getting that ring, since the Mets would probably give him one too. Maybe he should sign with the Phillies too, just to ensure having at least one team in the postseason.

I think Seattle is probably my rooting interest in the AL, having lived out west, although I have nothing the Angels either (aside form the fact that they just won a few years back).

In the NL, I'll probably hope for the Central champ. Milwaukee would be fun. But I reserve the right to root for any NL team in the WS if the Yankees or Red Sox make it.
