A long, long time ago, Mick presented his all-July 20 team, and it was pretty good. He's done other days too (like August 9, December 25, April 14, and the devilish June 6s.) But, were any of these teams the best? So, it's Friday and time for a challenge.

The idea is this. Pick a date, any date, and use the amazing Baseball Reference to locate the players born on that date. Next, assemble a ballclub, with batting order and pitching staff taking the statistics of the birthday boys in their respective career years. So, for example, the August 23rds look like this

I really like the offence. Runners on base galore and Blomberg, Davis and Bellhorn supplying pop. Three guys on the bench who can supply the late 3 run homer if needed, and everyone on the bench with a role. On to the pitching.

Nels Potter might have had the best season among the pitchers. His K and walk rates were among the best in the league in 1945. Overall, the pitchers are like a mirror image of the hitters. Effective but not too many home runs or strikeouts. The control for the pitchers is better than league average, whereas the hitters have better than average plate discipline. The August 23rds are going to win a lot of 6-4 and 5-3 games.

So, can you do better? Give me the date, your 25 man roster and the career years of each. Try to make sure that the player played the position you want him to play in the career year.  You'd also like to have players who can give you 600-700 PAs at each position, and 1500 innings in total.

Well, I was born on June 19th so the team for my day would be...

CA: Casper Asbjornson 235/272/303 97 games 56 OPS+
1B: Lou Gehrig 340/447/632 2164 games 179 OPS+
2B: Duane Kuiper 271/325/316 1057 games, 82 OPS+
3B: Don Gutteridge 256/308/362 1151 games, 84 OPS+
3B: Bob Aspromonte 252/308/336 1324 games, 85 OPS+
SS: Johnnie LeMaster 222/277/289 1039 games 60 OPS+
LF: Butch Davis 243/274/380 166 games 78 OPS+
CF: Dustan Mohr 249/332/422 504 games 92 OPS+
RF: Buck Stanton 200/200/333 13 G, 36 OPS+
DH: Doug Mientkiewicz 268/356/404 920 games 98 OPS+
IF: Frank McLaughlin 228/259/331 107 G, 97 OPS+ (1880's)
CA: Tom Terrell 250/250/250 1 game 53 OPS+
UT: Fernando Gonzalez 235/274/336 404 G, 71 OPS+

SP: Eddie Cicotte 208-149 2.38 ERA 123 ERA+ 502 G, 361 GS
SP: Jerry Reuss 220-191 3.64 ERA 100 ERA+ 628 G, 547 GS
SP: Bill Swift (1930's) 95-82 3.58 ERA 107 ERA+ 336 G, 163 GS
SP: Jim Slaton 151-158 4.03 ERA 94 ERA+ 496 G, 360 GS
SP: Bruce Chen 35-37 4.63 ERA 95 ERA+ 242 G, 112 GS

Closer: Bob Gibson 12-18-13 4.24 ERA 94 ERA+ 98 G 18 GS
RP: Don Ferrarese 19-36-5 4.00 ERA 97 ERA+ 183 G 50 GS
RP: Red Anderson 5-8-0 4.35 ERA 94 ERA+ 36 G 9 GS
RP: Willis Roberts 17-15-7 4.64 ERA 92 ERA+ 148 G 18 GS
RP: Claudio Vargas 41-36-1 4.91 ERA 92 ERA+ 147 G 108 GS
RP: Ozzie Osborn 3-0-0 4.50 ERA 87 ERA+ 24 G 0 GS
RP: Dan Adams 4-11-3 3.74 ERA 81 ERA+ 47 G 16 GS

So I have Bob Gibson closing...er...not that one. I have a 200 game winner with a sub-2.50 ERA as my ace, as long as he doesn't take any bribes. I do have Lou Gehrig though!

Pitching isn't too bad with just 2 guys below 90 for ERA+ and one of them can sing...oh, not that Ozzie Osborn.

My backup catcher only got into one game ever but I do have one! My RF also is kind of pathetic.

So, I have pitching and a HOF'er at first and...well...lets hope they are good fielders as no one else is above 98 for OPS+.

Oops, did career rather than career year.

LF: Butch Davis 344/359/508 33 games 137 OPS+
CF: Dustan Mohr 274/394/437 117 games 113 OPS+
RF: Frank McLaughlin 233/268/358 63 G, 113 OPS+ (1884)

CA: Tom Terrell 250/250/250 1 game 53 OPS+
OF: Buck Stanton 200/200/333 13 G, 36 OPS+

SP: Eddie Cicotte 29-7-1 1.82 ERA 175 ERA+ 40 G, 35 GS
SP: Bill Swift (1930's) 15-8-1 2.70 ERA 152 ERA+ 39 G, 21 GS
SP: Jerry Reuss 18-6-3 2.51 ERA 139 ERA+ 37 G, 29 GS
SP: Jim Slaton 15-9-0 3.63 ERA 115 ERA+ 32 G, 31 GS
SP: Claudio Vargas 6-8-0 4.34 ERA 115 ERA+ 23 G 20 GS

Closer: Bob Gibson 6-7-11 3.90 ERA 106 ERA+ 41 G 1 GS
RP: Bruce Chen 7-4-0 3.29 ERA 143 ERA+ 37 G, 15 GS
RP: Don Ferrarese 1-5-1 3.27 ERA 129 ERA+ 43 G 0 GS
RP: Willis Roberts 5-4-1 3.36 ERA 130 ERA+ 66 G 0 GS
RP: Red Anderson 4-6-0 4.18 ERA 97 ERA+ 32 G 6 GS
RP: Dan Adams 4-9-3 3.51 ERA 88 ERA+ 36 G 14 GS
RP: Ozzie Osborn 3-0-0 4.50 ERA 87 ERA+ 24 G 0 GS

A bit short on AB's but I do have 172 games started so we'd just cut back on Adams starts (88 ERA+) to make that work.

5 solid relievers with 2 inning eaters, 3 starters over 135 for ERA+ and all 5 at 115+. Sweet.

A very, very weak bench and a lot of missing games especially in the outfield. Still, having Gehrig 1927 helps a lot.
Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 01:58 PM EDT (#173229) #
The pitching is very good.  Cicotte (1919), Reuss (1975), Swift (1935), Slaton (1979) and Chen (2005) will give you 1200 first rate innings. But, a double play combination of Kuiper and Lemaster is comical.  There isn't a half-decent offensive season there among the two. Aspromonte was decent in 1964.
ayjackson - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 03:12 PM EDT (#173237) #
My b-day (June 30) double play combo of Grudzielanek and Tony Fernandez is nice (1999 OPS+ of 109 and 124, respectively).  I'll work on the rest of the team later.
Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#173240) #
October 22 looks interesting.
Jordan - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#173248) #
I challenge anyone to find a worse team than my birthday (November 1) produces. My best pitcher is Fernando Valenzuela, my top hitter is Vic Power, and my sole HOFer (Bid McPhee) never played a game in the 20th century. My starting outfield would probably feature Gary Redus. That's just sad.
Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 05:02 PM EDT (#173249) #
But, in addition to Power, you have Pete Rambo.  That aint chopped liver right there.

RP Brandon League, 2006, 1-2-1, 2.53 ERA, 186 ERA+, 33 G, 0 GS

The lineup is pretty weak with a good 2B and a pretty decent outfield.  The infield is generally pretty weak and the bench will be no help at all (especially when you consider that the numbers are for their best season!).  Perhaps Granderson or Waner should move to RF so McCracken can DH, but they both played almost exclusively in center.

The pitching is pathetic.  I'm going to need my starters to throw a lot of innings, but most to them are used to it because their careers ended around the first World War.  The bullpen is even weaker than the starters and I couldn't even find an 11th pitcher to round out the bullpen without resorting to pitchers from the 19th century or guys who threw only one or two games in their career.  Speaking of which, Florence seems to have had a great 14 games in the bullpen in 1995, but that was his only major league season.  Anybody know why he didn't get another chance?

Mike Green - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 05:20 PM EDT (#173254) #
It looks like Florence was picked up by Baltimore and stunk up the joint in triple A in 1996.  Here's his complete record.  Interesting club, Brian.
Brian W - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 05:43 PM EDT (#173259) #
Yeah, on further inspection he got by mostly on luck in 1995.  23 baserunners allowed in 12 innings means you have to be awfully lucky to only allow 2 earned runs.

This team is kind of interesting.  The starting pitching is excellent and the closer had a fantastic season, but the rest of the bullpen is kind of weak (including a couple of starters who will have to move to a new role).  There are a couple of great hitters in the outfield (Berkman and Dykstra), but Mateo isn't a great RF.

There are absolutely no worthwhile 1B born on this date.  Bob Spence appears to be the best of a poor lot, so I moved Jim Keenan from his primary position of catcher to help out.  Unfortunately he was playing in the American Association at the time, so his numbers aren't all that impressive.  In a few years time I'd put Alex Gordon over there or at 3B and force somebody else to try 1B.  Izturis is obviously going to be a weak spot in the batting order, but Sefcik can play short if more offense is needed.  Alberto Castillo was a late cut from the team, though he was actually a better hitter than Mike Champion who gets a spot on the bench.

AWeb - Friday, August 17 2007 @ 06:02 PM EDT (#173263) #
My B-day barely only musters 28 people, so I'll take that challenge (the worst team ever one). At least it saves sorting through the roster...I'll just go with everyone, and eliminate 3 people. It looks like I have utility infielders and long relievers (i.e., not good enough to start all the time) in most spots. Keep in mind, I cut 3 people from this team. My starters are decent, but my lineup, oh that lineup.

P/OF Bullet Rogan, Negro leagues (KC Monarchs) :   1924 had  16 wins and a .411 average, in the Hall. Obviously starts and plays OF for this team.
SP Vida Blue, OAK, 1971 :   24-8, ERA 1.82 (ERA+ 183), 312 IP, 301/88 K/BB, MVP and CY young, almost qualified for RoY too at age 21. Now that is a career year.
SP Duke Esper 1895      :   3.92 ERA (122 ERA+), 218 IP, 39/79 K/BB
SP Freddie Fitzsimmons 1931 :   253.7 IP, 3.05 ERA (122 ERA+), strong with the bat that year too : .228/.297/.413, 4HR in  92 ABs
SP Bob Milacki, BAL, 1989   :   243 IP, 3.81 ERA (102 ERA+), 113/88 K/BB, 1.321 WHIP

Bullpen
SP/RP Ray Dobens, BOS (AL), 1929 :   28.3 IP, 3.81 ERA (112 ERA+), 1.447 WHIP 3/8 batting
RP Chad Paronto, ATL, 2006       :   65 games, 56.7 IP, 41K/19BB, ERA 3.18(ERA+ 139), WHIP 1.271

Comments

I love this team. Aside from the fact that it is an absolute black hole at catcher, every other area is strong. There is one other possibility at catcher and that's George Gilham, who had 3 AB and 1 GP with a -100 OPS+ in 1920. We should do more September/ October birthday studies to see if my "Holiday Enthusiasm Theory" is correct.

Addendum to September 17th team post:

*Frank Schulte played RF in 1911, but had played 140 games in LF in his career prior to that year, so the switch from RF to LF would be easier for him than others. **Cisco Carlos had 7 starts and 1 relief appearance in 1967, but that 359 ERA+ was just to tantalizing to leave out of the bullpen and I noticed in the example that one of the relievers had 4 starts and 2 relief appearances, so what the heck.

My birthday is October 13...I was surprised to be able to put together a pretty solid lineup around Eddie Mathews...lots of on-base guys. The rotation steadily goes downhill after Rube, but we have a decent bullpen anchored by Hoffman. The bench was tough to fill out as there was, for whatever reason, an inordinate number of third-basemen and catchers and a dearth of second- and first-baseman. Eligible postitions for each player are listed after the stats. Nicely done, actionjackson and williams5. Action's club is a definite contender, but you do need a catcher and Wayne Krenchicki and Thad Bosley back there almost all the time is going to cause a few problems. Where is Tippy Martinez when you need him?
actionjackson - Saturday, August 18 2007 @ 05:27 PM EDT (#173295) #
Jordan, I'm sure Missus Action has you beat with her birthday on April 4. There is one starting pitcher with more than 30 starts. The next highest is 14. The total among the 11 lame pitchers that can actually start a game is 107 GS. Doesn't really allow for the luxury of a good bullpen does it? It could've been a really nice team. The up the middle group includes Ray Fosse at catcher, with Mickey Owen backing up (I'd kill for that kind of catching), Tommy Herr and Jim Fregosi at the keystone combo and Tris Speaker in CF, with Gil Hodges and Mike Epstein at 1B and DH, not to mention Scott Rolen at 3B, and Joe Vosmik in LF, as well as Cameron Maybin, who just got called up but with that pitching they ain't going nowhere. Looks like a lot of double digit games if you ask me. If anyone can come up with a reasonable semblance of a team feel free, but this one looks really tough. They'd be very exciting to watch, perhaps more so than the current edition of your Toronto Blue Jays, but they would probably lose more games, despite having a Yankee like offense. I'm stumped.

Presenting...Your Ides of March Assassins!

Player/Manager: Arlie Latham (0-3 with the 1896 St. Louis Browns)

1b: Kevin Youkilis (.293/.392/.452 with this year's Bosox)
2b: Don Lang (Played a grand total of three games at second in his career, such as it was, batted .269/.364/.356 in 323 AB with the 1948 Cardinals)
3b: Mike Pagliarulo (A combined .303/.357/.465 in 370 AB in 1993 with the Twins and Orioles)
ss: Whitey Wietelmann (.271/.335/.348 with the 1945 Boston Braves)
Lf: Mickey Hatcher (.302/.342/.406 with the 1984 Twins; he doubles as the hitting coach.)
Cf: Bobby Bonds (.288/.355/.512 for the 1971 Giants, started 28 games in center that year)
Rf: Harold Baines (.304/.361/.541 with the 1984 White Sox)
DH: Arlie Latham (.301/.368/.374 with the 1886 Browns)

C: Dave Watkins(.176/.291/.284 in 148 AB with the 1969 Phillies, bats right)
INF/Emergency C: Doc Casey (.268/.300/.325 with the 1904 Cubs, caught 3 games, switch-hitter)
INF: Kim Batiste (.282/.298/.436 for the 1993 Phillies, bats right)
OF: Bill Hallman (.246/.301/.328 for the 1901 Milwaukee Brewers, bats left)
OF: Fred Bennett (.281/.333/.371 in 89 AB for the 1931 Pirates, bats right)

RHSP: Lou Fette (20-10, 2.88 ERA with 259 IP for 1937 Braves)
RHSP: Rosy Ryan (17-12, 3.01 ERA in 172.2 IP for 1922 Giants)
RHSP: Rube Peters (5-6, 4.14 ERA in 28 G, 11 GS, 108.2 IP for 1912 White Sox)
?HSP: Bill Wise (23-18, 3.04 ERA in 364.1 IP for Washington of the not-really-a-major-league Union Association in 1884. He had brief cups of coffee in the major leagues on either side of this year.)
RHSP: Roscoe Coughlin (4-6, 4.26 ERA in 95 IP for the 1890 Cubs)

RHRP: Jim Kern (13-5, 29 SV, 1.57 ERA in 71 G and 143 IP for the 1979 Rangers)
RHRP: Bob Locker (7-5, 20 SV, 2.09 ERA in 77 G and 124.2 IP for the 1967 White Sox)
RHRP: Wayne Granger (6-5, 35 SV, 2.66 ERA in 67 G and 84.2 IP for the 1970 Reds)
RHRP: Vladimir Nunez (4-5, 2.74 ERA in 52 G, 92 IP for 2001 Marlins)
RHRP: Nellie King (4-1, 3.15 ERA in 38 G, 60 IP for the 1956 Pirates. He's also the broadcaster, which ought to be interesting when he gets into games)
LHRP: Rafael Perez (0-0, 1.71 ERA in 27 G, 42 IP for this year's Indians. He's also exactly my age, and hence would be on the team even if we didn't need a lefty.)

I imagine the lineup would go like this:

1. Latham DH (r)
2. Youkilis 1b (r)
3. Baines rf (l)
4. Bonds cf (r)
5. Pagliarulo 3b (l)
6. Hatcher lf (r)
7. Wietelmann ss (s)
8. Lang 2b (r)
9. Noble c (r)

I initially drew this team up as a whole career sort of deal, and the results were less than spectacular. But with everyone having a career year, the offense goes from passable to pretty good and the starting pitching goes from godawful to sort of OK. Doc Casey would be seeing a lot of playing time, spelling Pagliarulo, who in the year I picked wasn't a full-time player. I considered putting him at catcher, but figured that it would be counter to the spirit of the game.

I figure this team might win 65 games or so in a full season. The pitching would likely get us killed, but on days when the starters were able to get it to the bullpen, the Assassins might just have a chance to get within striking distance...

What a great team name. "The Ides of March Assassins."  Better than the Dec. 25 "Christmas Presence," for sure. Anyone think of a date that would be more open to a great team name than that one?

A change to the Assassins lineup listed above: I somehow overlooked Robert Fick, who will now be our starting catcher, hopefully playing as well as he did for the 2001 Tigers, batting .272/.339/.476 for an OPS+ of 118. Ray Noble moves to the bench, and Dave Watkins will be sent down to our AAA club, the Conspirators.

As for other team names, why not the July 4th Revolutionaries, Minutemen or Patriots? The November 7th Revolutionaries, Reds or Commissars? The 14th July Robespierres, Revolutionaries (yes, I know-I seem to have a one track mind here), Guillotines or Sans-Cullottes?
