Four affiliates scored 8 runs or more each and they all won.  Syracuse scored two, and almost won.

Syracuse 2 @ Ottawa 4

Mark Redman went 6 solid innings, but the Chief bullpen couldn't make a 2-1 lead stand up. The Chiefs used small ball to take the lead, scoring a run in the first on a Wayne Lydon single, a stolen base and a Mike Vento RBI single and another in the sixth the same way, with Sergio Santos stealing the base and Robinson Diaz singling him home. Jamie Vermilyea held the fort for Redman in the seventh, but Scott Sauerbeck gave up a run in the eighth, and Blaine Neal watched from the mound Brennan King's 2 run walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. Redman allowed 1 earned run on 7 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Vento stroked 3 hits for Syracuse.

New Hampshire 10 @ Altoona 5

The Fisher Cats stroked 6 extra-base hits among their 11 on the night to capitalize on 3 Altoona errors and work their way to double digits on the scoreboard. Ryan Patterson singled, doubled and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in 3, Rob Cosby drove in 2 with a couple of doubles and Dustin Majewski tripled in two. Eric Fowler escaped after 5 innings, having allowed 3 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks. Seth Overbey, Tracy Thorpe and Jesse Carlson finished up, with Thorpe's 3 up- 3 down eighth including 2 strikeouts worth special mention.

Palm Beach 0 @ Dunedin 8

Dunedin pounded out 11 hits and drew 8 walks in an 8-0 whitewash. Adrian Martin started and went 5 innings of 1 hit ball, walking no one and striking out 4. Billy Carnline and Conor Falkenbach finished off the shutout. The top of the order was productive, with Anthony Hatch homering and walking twice and Chris Gutierrez also reaching base thrice. Jesus Gonzalez doubled twice and walked in 4 trips and drove in a couple of runs.

Peoria 4 @ Lansing 12

The Lugnuts put up a sweet dozen on 18 hits, with everyone getting at least one. Sean Shoffit and Scott Campbell homered, while Matthew Lane and Jonathan Jaspe each had 4 hits. The game was closer than the final score. The game was tied at 2 after 4 and 1/2 innings. The Lugs went ahead on an RBI double from Chris Emanuele and a Travis Snider RBI single, and then put the game away on Jonathan Diaz' 3 run double in the sixth. Kyle Ginley started and went 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits and 4 walks with 9 strikeouts. Po-Hsuan Keng, Chris Reddout and Edward Rodriguez followed.

Auburn 12 @ Jamestown 4

There must have been a sale on at the bakery, as the Doubledays took 12 too. Auburn took a 3-2 lead to the 7th inning, but scored 4 highlighted by triples from Adam Calderone and Manny Rodriguez and then put the game away with a Ben Zeskind grand slam in the eighth. Mark Rzepczynski was the beneficiary, as he went 5 innings and gave up 1 earned run on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 7and picking off a runner. Shawn Scobee hit his 3rd homer in 2 days in the ninth. Ryan Bird and Drew Taylor finished up, with Bird's 3 innings of solid work (only a solo homer, no walks and three strikeouts) deserving of polite applause from the netizens.

GCL Jays, scheduled day off

Kevin Goldstein has a fine piece on slot money in the draft  in today's BP.

Scott Sauerbeck had a bad day in yesterday's game, but he's got 14 strikeouts to 1 walk in 57 batters faced at Syracuse. Secret September weapon anyone?

Best news of the day: A. J. Burnett had a great rehab start this afternoon for Syracuse in Ottawa, going 5 innings and allowing 1 run, while walking 1 and striking out 7.  As long as he feels OK tomorrow, the club has got to be pleased with that.

The Chiefs won in extras.

And then there are the Tigers, who have used their first-round picks to grab top talent as it has fallen to them because of real or perceived bonus demands. This philosophy has allowed them to add Justin Verlander, Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, and potentially Rick Porcello to their organization. The Tigers have selected them all at positions well below where their talent merited. Clearly, it’s working in Detroit, and one would think others would learn their lesson.

Good quote from the article.

Sunny day in Ottawa, announced as 26C.

Before the game, Burnett was out in right-field, wearing #50.  A lot of fans (and it seemed, some media) with cameras were in the right-field stands, next to the bullpen. One kid arrived in the crowd and yelled out "Hey AJ" and AJ waved back from a distance.  The kid thought this was really cool, and proceeded to try to get AJ's attention again and again, but was ignored from that point.

Burnett warmed up by playing catch with catcher Robinzon Diaz.  During long-toss, Diaz was obviously throwing harder than Burnett was.  But when Burnett got on the bullpen mound, he began throwing bullets.  Watching from the side, it looked unhittable.

Burnett carried this form into the early part of the game, striking out 6 of the first 7 batters, with the fans oohing and aahing.  On 2 of the strikeouts, Diaz had to chase after the ball and make a throw to 1st-base to get the out.

In the 4th inning, a fan yelled out from the stands, "HOW'S THE ARM A.J.?".  Burnett gave a quick thumbs up in the direction of the fan.  The fans found this a hoot.  Surprisingly, no one asked a followup question.  Burnett's one walk of the game though immediately followed this.

Burnett stayed in the game for 5 innings, 65 pitches, 7 K's, 1 walk, 6 ground ball outs (counting Russ Adams' error), 1 fly out, 1 popup.  Of the 3 hits, the double by Dawkins was solid, and Moran's single to centre was a liner; Rushford's single was more of a bloop.

In the 6th inning, Burnett re-appeared in the bullpen, and threw several more pitches.

The crowd of 3046 filled in during the afternoon.  There were gripes about how long the concession lines were.  There was a cheer though when it was announced the Jays were ahead 3-1 in the 5th (though groans when the 5-4 win for the Yanks was announced).

While Burnett seemed to be treated well by the crowd, at least one group repeatedly taunted Adams ("over-rated-clap-clap-clapclapclap", Derek Jeter style) and other players having a bad day (e.g. "0 for 6" chants for Barker).

AJ was the pitcher of record to win until Ryan Houston gave up the lead in the 8th.  The Chiefs ended up winning 5-4 in 13 innings.  Burnett was not spotted on the field when the Chiefs celebrated at the end.
