With one month to go in the minor league year, we turn our attention back to the hitters. It won't be long until we sharpen our pencils and replace the batteries in our wireless mice to prepare for the annual end of year prospect review.

Meanwhile, the farm affiliates went 2-2 on Thursday with 2 Florida rainouts. An encouraging performance from Ricky Romero highlighted the day's events.

Catching, the outfield and first base (with one of Lind and Snider ending up there) are relative strengths for the organization now. Second base is in good shape, but the left side of the infield is not well protected, with shortstop being an immediate and medium term problem and third base being a potential medium term problem.

Santos has indeed been called up to Syracuse.

I read in a minor league thread a couple days ago that Jeroloman was on the reserve list; can anyone explain the reason for this? Surely the team is not looking to cut back his at bats, a catcher who controls the strike zone that well has to have a considerable chance to at least make it as a backup.
Marc Hulet - Friday, August 03 2007 @ 09:20 AM EDT (#172505) #
Chances are he went home for the birth of a baby, a funeral, that sort of thing. It's not uncommon... he's back off the reserve list now.

Thus far the Positional Players Draft Class of 2007 is very unimpressive at the dish.  Averages, OBP & Slugging are uninspiring all around.  Let's hope it's a transitionary phase & the month of August shows dramatic improvement all around.

On a positive note Mike G's infatuation with young catcher Collins seems warranted in the early going.  What do you see in Collins that has you so excited?

Mike Green - Friday, August 03 2007 @ 09:53 AM EDT (#172510) #
Please take Rookie League stats with a huge grain of salt.  Collins is 21 and had success in the college ranks as a hitter with excellent control of the strike zone (more walks and more HBP each than strikeouts) and medium range pop developing in his last year.  He really does not belong in Rookie League.

Collins was voted one of the top defensive catchers in college baseball last year, and his SB/CS rates were excellent.  A combination of good defence and a balance of offensive skills is exactly what I like to see in a catcher.  The only explanation that I can think of for his availability in the 10th round is that scouts just missed him.  He developed significantly with the bat in his last year of college.

MatO - Friday, August 03 2007 @ 11:36 AM EDT (#172514) #
It's also possible that Collins had what scouts consider an aluminum bat swing and they didn't think it would translate to wooden bats very well.
Mike Green - Friday, August 03 2007 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#172515) #
Maybe.  Although the Rookie League performance does tend to suggest that he might have a smidgen of power even with wood bats!  He seemed to do pretty well in the Cape League with the lumber in 2005.

The Lansing State Journal game report from yesterday points out that the Lugnuts are good bets to make the playoffs.  There are some nice photos in the gallery (see the links on the right-side of the screen).  Nate Starner throws for the Luggies tonight.

Here is the last Joel Collins comment for the day.   Batter's Box draft threads are an annual highlight.  In the 2003 thread, someone named Steve posted (#47265) that Joel Collins was one of the best Canadian prospects out there.  That was out of high school.   Steve, if you are out there, can you tell us more?

Another Collins in GCL

Pitcher Tim Collins, who graduated from Worcester Tech last month, signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night and will report to the Dunedin Blue Jays, the team’s Single-A affiliate in the Florida State League.

“This came out of nowhere,” Collins said. “I was all set to go to (the Community College of Rhode Island), and then my Main South (American Legion) coach scheduled a workout with the Jays. (Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi) caught me pitching somewhere, then he and scout Tom Clark set up a workout.”

Collins threw a bullpen session on Thursday, met again with Clark, and signed a contract the next day.

Collins, who will leave for Dunedin on Wednesday, expects to work out of the bullpen for the first few weeks.

“I’m sure they’re going to have me take it slow,” Collins said. “I’ll probably do a little bullpen workout, and start off throwing one or two innings until I’m ready to start.”

I was reading an article on another Jays site yesterday, and must admit I was a bit flabbergasted with what was written.

The author of this article stated that despite a few bumps in the road this year, Ricky Romero projected as a number 2 starter.  He also stated that Romero would most likely start next year in AAA or make the big club out of spring training.

I know that Red Sox fans are infamous for overrating their prospects, but this really seems like quite a stretch to me.

Wouldn't Jays management be very happy if Romero ends up a number 4/5 starter based on his stuff and his minor league performance thus far?  I haven't seen him pitch, but isn't his stuff very pedestrian compared to McGowan's?

Who is more likely to have some semblance of a major league career at this point, Litsch or Romero?

timpinder - Saturday, August 04 2007 @ 10:17 AM EDT (#172555) #

I've never seen Romero pitch, but over the last couple of years I've read every scouting report I could find on him, and from what I've read, #3 starter and maybe even #2 starter doesn't seem like that much of a stretch.  I don't see him with the Jays next year though, with Janssen and Litsch likely ahead of him on the depth chart right now.

My biggest concern with Romero is that he has missed time with shoulder problems the last couple of years.  Most scouting reports I've read report he has "plus" command with his "average-plus" stuff, but he has not displayed good command in AA this year as he has a BB9 rate around 5.  I wonder if the injuries have played a part.

Anyway, despite what some might say, Ricciardi is not a complete idiot and I highly doubt he'd target a guy with 5th starter stuff with the 6th overall pick.  If Romero can stay healthy he should eventually be a good middle of the rotation lefty, from what I've read.

I apologize if I missed it somewhere, but does anyone know how long Adam Lind is expected to be out of the Chiefs' lineup?

What site?  Who was the 'talent evaluator?'  Commenting about 'prospects' and further, predicting what the Jays see in their future, is a little disconcerting.  Without direct feedback from the front office, a lot of these writings should be taken with a grain of salt.

Does anyone else think that Snider's BABIP is a little high?

Hello,

That article was done at me looking at Romero who came off getting his first victory. I probably would've liked some feedback on that site where it was done as I probably would've responded with a better attitude. If Romero does continue to pitch well in AA, is it really a stretch to have him in AAA or battling for a ML role out of spring training next season? As we've seen with Litsch, AA success is not far from the majors concerning pitchers and with Romero being a top draft pick I think the Jays would be more aggressive.

I am not overrating Romero but he still projects as a number 2 if all things do pan out for him (which nobody ends up fulfilling anyway). I don't know what to really say as we will have to see how Romero turns out. The point of the article was to give insight on Romero for those unaware of Blue Jay prospects. Clearly I don't have have the expertise of the people here as I am an everyday reader but come over to Bluebird Banter to share your thoughts.
