Before we get to the pitcher summary, a recap of Thursday night's games is in order. The farm affiliates went 3-3. Nate Starner continued his pace of striking out over a batter an inning, while walking one every four innings. If he keeps that up, we will be seeing his name more prominently featured.

For those who like different names... check out "AA" Trenton's Bronson Sardinha's middle name. (click on NHFC vs Trenton for Boxscore...then on Sardinha) WOW ! Quite the moniker.

Can someone please tell me what GO/AO stands for?
Thanks.
Mudie - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 07:31 AM EDT (#171502) #
ground outs/ air outs, right?
Lugnut Fan - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 07:56 AM EDT (#171504) #
It's good to see someone like Starner having some success.  I just question his long term durability.  He doesn't step towards home plate with his lead foot when he throws, he kind of steps towards first and totally throws against his entire body.  It's kind of weird.
Mike Green - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 08:14 AM EDT (#171505) #
I have added in the GCL boxscore, and Mudie is correct that GO/AO refers to ground outs/air outs.

Thank you, Lugnut Fan, for the comments about Starner's delivery.  You were right about Cheng and all the curveballs he threw when he was young. What have you observed of his repertoire?

Pistol - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 08:34 AM EDT (#171507) #
Thigpen's back behind the plate, and looks like he'll stay there for now.
Lugnut Fan - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 10:59 AM EDT (#171516) #

Starner has the typical fastball, curve ball change up repertoire.  His fastball is average (I consider 87-90 average at this level) and his curveball and change up are also about average.  He really doesn't have a plus pitch, so he is going to live and die by location of his pitches and working low in the zone.  His delivery allows him to hide the ball and I think hitters may have a tough time picking up his release point.  He told me he has thrown like that his entire life and he hasn't really had any arm issues.  If I was a scout, I would have shyed away from him though.  That may be why he was signed as a free agent and wasn't drafted.

Unfortunately I was right about Cheng, but I'm hoping when he returns from his shoulder rehab that he will actually be a better pitcher.  He always worked off his curveball and had very, very poor control of his fastball.  Perhaps he will work off his fastball more when he returns and worry more about his location than he did.  Last year in casual conversation he had said that he would throw 200 to 250 pitches in his sides in Taiwan.  I was shocked when I heard that, but I believe that is how pitchers are developed in the Asia / Pacific area.  I heard on the radio this winter when everyone was going crazy for Matsuzaka that he would throw that many pitches in a side as well.  There was also a story that Matsuzaka would throw a nine inning game and then go throw another 75 to 100 pitches in a pen afterwards.  I don't know how true that is, but it sounds like that may be how Asian pitchers are groomed.

It sounds as though Starner's future may be in the pen.  Thanks, LF.

Carnline has 7 K's right?  74, seems a little bit high for the number of innings pitched.

Does anybody know if he's done his suspension yet?

Mike Green - Friday, July 13 2007 @ 11:56 PM EDT (#171534) #
Fixed.

It was a good night on the farm.  Brandon League did his thing (4 batters, 1K, 3 ground outs) again.  The Fisher Cats had a cool late rally with Robinson Diaz playing hero, and the A ball squads scored runs in bunches.
