There was only GCL action on the slate yesterday. Apparently MLB doesn't want any competition for the All Star Game.

John Tolisano had the only notable performance on the day.

GCL Jays 2 @ GCL Tigers 9

The Jays didn't have a great performance yesterday. However, John Tolisano managed to get 2 of the Jays 4 hits on the day, including a HR. Tolisano also stole a base, as did Kevin Ahrens.

The Jays struck out 15 times yesterday. The Tigers 4th round pick out of LSU, Charlie Furbush, had 10 Ks in 5 innings. Not knowing the Tigers system it seems odd that a 4th round pick out of a major college program would be in the GCL. Strike out hat tricks were 'earned' by Fuenmayor, Chavez, and Talley.

Marcus Walden, the Jays 9th rounder out of Fresno CC got the start and pitched 4 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits and a walk. He struck out 4.

And in case you were wondering, there's still no GCL Jays website at MiLB.com.

But Baseball America has links to all the GCL Jays info... rosters, schedules, stats, etc. Just click on "stats and scores" on the top right of the main page and scroll down to the bottom where the GCL links are... And this is linked directly from MiLB.com, which is the confusing part. All the GCL Jays pages have been created and updated by MiLB.com staff, but they have yet to add links on their own site.

BA updated their draft database.  For the 14 signed picks in the first 10 rounds the Jays paid almost $6.3 million.  In all the Jays probably paid $6.5 million for signing bonuses on the entire draft.  At this point Randy Boone is the only top 10 round pick that hasn't signed.

The seniors that were drafted seemed to get about 80% of slot.  All of the other draft picks seemed to sign for what appears to be the recommended slot money for those picks.

There seems to be some serious hitting issues on the Jays GCL team.  Most guys on the team are hitting somewhere around the .200 mark, with an OPS of .600.  Even hitters such Yoherman Chavez, who hit .276/.333/.695 (AVG/OBP/OPS) last season in Pulaski is only hitting .195/.346/.614.

Does anyone know if the GCL is typically a tough hitters league?

Here's John Habib's mid-season Fisher Cat report from the Union Leader.

The GCL is a tough hitter's league. What is a little worrisome is that the GCL Blue Jays have the highest K rate in the league.  With Jackson, Tolisano, Fuenmayor, Chavez, Ahrens, Talley et. al there, you would hope that it might be middle of the pack at worst.  The season is still young.

Young season, young players... I'd be happier if they were all crushing the ball, but I don't think you can worry yet.

Remember Alex Rios after he was drafted? 269/321/325 at Medicine Hat. For that matter, he didn't even get his OPS over 700 until he got to Dunedin...

Don't worry about the GCL. The numbers mean nothing. Don't believe me? Check out Chipper Jones' minor league numbers at www.thebaseballcube.com... He was horrendous in the GCL and then mashed the next season... and Kevin Ahrens has been likened to Jones.

The Rookie League numbers do mean something.  It's a lot better if the 18 year old hits like Vladimir Guerrero did when he was in the GCL, or the way Travis Snider hit in the Appy League, than the way Chipper Jones or Alex Rios did.  The other thing is that neither Rios nor Jones struck out terribly often, even at age 18.  The power usually arrives later, but you can usually see some indication of pure hitting ability in not striking out even when the hitter is 18.

Ahrens has been compared to Jones, but it is a pretty superficial comparison.  They were both switch-hitting shortstops with power and with modest fielding ability, but Jones' swing was always smooth.

Like Nick Noonan and his 1.007 OPS!

Scott Sauerbeck, recently signed by the Jays, has been promoted to AAA.  Adrian Martin was promoted from Lansing to Dunedin.

Scott Sauerbeck - the SS LOOGY Version 2.0?
Ryan Day - Thursday, July 12 2007 @ 09:46 AM EDT (#171459) #

I wonder if the Sauerbeck addition hints that Ricciardi is going to try and move Downs. Tallet has been excellent, and Sauerbeck is probably viable as a strict LOOGY (as in, dear god don't let him face a right-handed batter)

Downs is a very good, pretty cheap, left-handed reliever. Teams will often overpay for that kind of guy.
