Toledo 4  Syracuse 6

The Chiefs scored five runs in the first inning to set up the win.  Ryan Roberts homered to get things going and then Russ Adams, Kevin Barker, Chad Mottola and John-Ford Griffin each singled.  A sac fly and a 2 RBI double from Eric Kratz made it a five run inning.  Josh Banks gave up back to back homeruns in the second inning but other than that it was a good start.  Banks went six innings, with two runs allowed on five hits and a walk with six K's.  Brandon League came on for the seventh and got an out but then conceded a single and a walk.  Ryan Houston relieved League and gave up another hit and two walks, and two runs.  Blaine Neal had a two inning save.  Barker and Griffin had three hits each, Roberts and Mottola each had two hits.

Erie 5  New Hampshire 11

The Fisher Cats scored four runs in the first inning, Kyle Yates gave up two runs over five innings as New Hampshire cruised to the win.  The first five hitters of the game for the Cats each had a hit.  Peralta, Diaz and Santos singled, Cosby doubled and Mathews singled.  Later Ryan Klosterman hit his first home run of the year, a grand slam, to seal the deal.  Robinzon Diaz went 4-5, Rob Cosby and Sergio Santos each were 3-5.

Dunedin - All-Star break

Lansing 4  Fort Wayne 7

Nate Starner pitched four innings and gave up four runs on eighth hits and two walks.  Julio Pinto relieved Starner and gave up three runs in the fifth.  Fort Wayne only faced two hitters over the minimum on the last five innings.  Lansing had scored two runs in the second and two more in the third.  Matt Lane delivered a two run home run to score the runs in the third.  Scott Campbell and Brian Pettway had two hits each.  Snider took an oh-fer.  The Midwest League all-star break starts now.

The Jays signed a non-drafted free agent by the name of Jacob Cook (LHP)
out of James Madison University. His numbers weren't great but it's an
extreme hitter's park. He is headed to the GCL, according to the school's website.
Pistol - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 03:08 PM EDT (#170051) #
Cook's numbers if anyone is curious.

Anyone know when the official Auburn and GCL rosters will be posted?
Mike Green - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 03:48 PM EDT (#170059) #
The Auburn Citizen posted rosters over the weekend, but they may not be official.  J.P. Arencibia was not listed on the Auburn roster, but by this account, he is headed for Auburn.

Yeah, I saw that article, but it didn't make much sense.  A fair number of the players mentioned are already playing on other teams, some even in Dunedin. Why would they be then put on a short season team?
cybernetic - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 04:15 PM EDT (#170065) #
Possibly means some guys from extended (or Lansing) will be promoted up and some bench guys demoted to get more regular playing time

An interesting, possibly meaningless trend, I noticed while perusing Sergio Santos' numbers: He had his amazing hot start in April, during which he was swinging at, and hitting, a lot of pitches: A 4/11 bb/k over 65 at-bats, which resulted in a spiffy 277/333/692 line.

In May, he started walking more, and striking out more: 11/22, in 104 at-bats. He hit okay, but not great, in that period: 252/322/452.

So far in June, he's already drawn 13 walks, and has only 13 Ks, in 55 at-bats. But he's only hitting 200/353/364.

Is this an effort to improve his plate discipline that's costing him some hitting ability, perhaps taking away from his natural aggressiveness? Or perhaps just a slump caused by opposing pitchers not giving him anything to hit?

I was away for the weekend, and was a little shocked to see that Eric Fowler and Ted Serro had been demoted to Lansing.  Was this just to get them regular work over Dunedin's all-star break?
Mike Green - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#170068) #
Fowler and Serro were sent down to help out a beleaguered staff facing back-to-back doubleheaders. I am pretty sure that they'll be back in Dunedin for their next outings.
ayjackson - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#170069) #
Lansing had five games in three days and needed some reinforcements.  I don't think the moves were demotions.

I have a copy of the GCL roster from the Blue Jays, if any of the Batter's Box staff is online and wants to email me for a copy of the Excel file. It appears to Jays signed a few more undrafted free agents as well.
Marc Hulet - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 07:31 PM EDT (#170081) #

The Gulf Coast League roster:

Pitchers: Ryan Bird (?), Ross Buckwalter, Joel Carreno, Jacob Cook (undrafted free agent), Brad Cuthbertson, Jimmy Dougher, Frank Gailey, Nate Jennings, Tyler Johnson (?), Scott Leffler (a recent signing), Brian Letko, Mike Lynch, Pat McGuigan, Nate Melek, Jay Monti, Marcus Walden, Kyle Walters and John Zinnicker.

Catchers: Chris House, Jon Talley, CJ Ebarb, Jim Paquette (?)

Infielders: Kevin Ahrens (listed at SS), Jon Del Campo, Luis Fernandez, Balbino Fuenmayor, Mike McDade, John Tolisano

Outfielders: Moises Sierra, Bartolo Nicolas, Eric Eiland, Johermyn Chavez

*Obviously there are some players missing but I’m told things are still being worked out and I will receive up-to-date rosters as they become available.

Currently missing: Joshua Wells (RHP-INJ), Manny Sena (converted to RHP), Kevin Denis-Fortier (1B), Adalberto Santos (IF), Mikal Garbarino (OF) and Steve Condotta (IF).

I am currently looking into Bird, Johnson and Paquette, although I assume they were undrafted free agents out of college.

Ryan Bird, RHP, U of St. Louis

Tyler Johnson, RHP, Bowling Green U

As for Jim Paquette (Jimmy, or James), no mention of him in college baseball or minor league baseball

Marc Hulet - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 08:01 PM EDT (#170084) #
Well that's why... "Jim" Paquette's name is actually "Jeff." Someone should probably tell the Jays before he arrives in camp!

Thanks Marc! It seems like the only 2 signed, but unassigned, draft choices are C JP Arencibia and LHP Marc Rzepczynski (spell that a few times).

Also, anyone know where Daniel O'Brien is at this point?

Mike Green - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 09:22 PM EDT (#170090) #
Thanks, Marc.

Check out that GCL infield- McDade, Tolisano, Ahrens and Fuenmayor.  It is great to hear that Leffler signed. If I've kept score correctly, that leaves only Justin Jackson unsigned.  It seems unlikely that he'd go directly to Auburn if he did sign; perhaps the club would work a rotation at short, third and DH among Jackson, Ahrens and Fuenmayor.
Mike Green - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 09:30 PM EDT (#170091) #
Victor Zambrano started the first game of the doubleheader for Dunedin today and gave up 2 runs in 4 innings, but walked 7.

Maldoff - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 09:44 PM EDT (#170092) #

Mike Green, Trystan Manguson, Alan Farina and Randy Boone also have yet to sign.

In addition, the first game of Dunedin's doubleheader today was the completion of a game earlier this year that was suspended due to a power outage. Zambrano's "start" was a carryover from that.

Gerry - Monday, June 18 2007 @ 09:51 PM EDT (#170093) #

Mike:

The first game is the continuation of a previously suspended game, Zambrano made that start weeks ago.
