With the addition of some new talent to the minor league system yesterday, a depth chart incorporating some of the new talent, in lieu of the usual Friday summary seems in order. The Jays had seven picks in the first, supplemental and second rounds.

But first, a brief update. The farm affiliates went 2-2.

Thursday boxscores and highlights

Syracuse 2 @ Toledo 5
MacDonald 5IP, 9H, 4ER, 2W, 1K, Griffin 2-4, HR, Olmedo 0-2, 2W, Zaun 0-4
New Hampshire 11 @ Akron 3 Yates 5IP, 6H, 2ER, 1W, 1K, League 1IP, 0H, 0W, 1K, Cosby 2-5, 1W, 5RBI, Santos 2W
Jupiter 4 @ Dunedin 6, 10 inn Magee 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 4W 6K, Butler WO HR, Nielsen 3-5, Garibaldi 3-5, Jeroloman 1-3, W
South Bend 14 @ Lansing 10 Shoffit HR, TD, Lane HR, FG

The depth chart

The idea here is to look to 2010 or 2011, and see who might be here or close to being ready. Some of the choices might seem arbitrary. Brandon Magee probably belongs on the starting pitcher list (and has now been added), and a couple of the relievers might end up as starters and vice versa. And don't even ask about the decision to put Towers on the list of pitchers, and not Zaun on the list of catchers. Feel free to write Zaun's name in, if you feel the need . Check out Pistol's summary of the early round picks.

SP RP C 1B 2B SS 3B RF CF LF
Halladay Ryan Thigpen Overbay Hill Jackson Glaus Rios Wells Lind
Burnett League Arencibia Adams Santos Ahrens Snider Rodriguez Eiland
Marcum Accardo Jeroloman Tolisano Olmedo Fuenmayor Chavez Patterson
McGowan Janssen Liuzza Mathews
Towers Frasor
R. Romero D. Romero
Cecil Magnuson
Litsch Farina
Purcey Rzepczynski
Yates Mills
Magee MacDonald

What I see is an organization deep in pitching, and still with noticeable weakness at catcher, shortstop and centerfield.

I know he currently plays RF, but I'd say that Rios is also on the depth chart for CF, so I wouldn't call that a weakness.  RF might be though, as from most of what I've heard, Snider's defense isn't his strong suit, so I can see him moving to left (although there's also the possibility that Johnson ends up moving to right).  Actually, I think the Jays are pretty solid for the short-term future in the OF just because they've got 3 very flexible and solid defensive outfielders that are currently on the roster, have produced ML-caliber years at the ML level, and are under control for a few years.

Any risks some ot these guys won't sign?

Do you have a chart like this for 2008 and 2009?

How about Balbino Fuenmayor for 3B?  He'll be 21 in 2010 or 2011, I believe.  Will he be playing rookie ball this year?

I noticed Jonathan Baksh in the lineup for the Lugnuts last night.  I presume he's been in extended spring training, but does anyone have any insight on why he hasn't been on the radar till now?

After a slow start, Brandon Magee has reeled off four straight strong starts, and in 7 of his last 8 starts he has kept his team in the game (by giving up 3 or fewer runs in those 7 starts). I had high expectations (as did many others) for Brandon this season so it is nice to see him turn things around. The K/BB ratio, however, is still a work in progress at 28/27.

I think the of depth is better than it is portrayed here. IMO you could add Yohamyr Chavez, Aaron Mathews and Ryan Patterson to the list. At ss, Jomathan del Campo would be a fair addition as well as Balbino.

Severely lacking in front-end pitching.

We needed a catcher too but that could have waited a round I figure, but that #21 spot seemed prime for a pitcher especially considering that after round 1 pitchers have historically not projected well (as that recent 90's study proved.. I wonder if 2000-2006 would hold as true, however).

I have no idea what to expect from Fuenmayor.  I will add him and Patterson and Mathews to the chart.

Alex Rios is not likely to be a centerfielder in three years time.  He'll be nearing 30.  He has been filling out quite a bit the last 2 years, with the result that his power has blossomed but his range has diminished a bit.

From the sounds of it, Snider has been promoted to Dunedin, but I cannot 100 percent confirm that yet.

The organization does seem to have a dearth of talent up the middle, but J.P. does seem to have a penchant for drafting up the middle players and seeing where they stick.

This draft has seem some speedy infielders and centerfielders drafted as well as a catcher.

With Vernon locked in CF should be fine for a few more years until he has to move to RF.

Thigpen seems destined for another position perhaps second base. So unless Aaron Hill could run with the SS position. I see the Jays having to go the free agent or trade route for catchers and SS.

Was at the Fisher Cats game last night.  Santos was 0-4.  You didn't mention Majewski was 3-4 with a double and Smith was 2-3 with a HR, BB, and HBP.  Also, Mayorson was 3-6 and Diaz was 3-6.   In other words, Cosby and Santos weren't the only attractions.  Cannon would have hit a homeroom if his bat hadn't broke.  He crushed a ball to right but the bat broke.  League didn't particulary look that good.  He got up to 91 a couple of times, but he did fare better than the night before.
