The Batting Prospect Summary

For newcomers to this feature, BB in the table below refers to the Batters Box prospect rating at the end of last season.

The best news since last time is the return to play of Ryan Patterson and Joey Metropoulos after injury. Statistics are through games of Tuesday, so Metropoulos 2007 debut is not yet reflected. We will get him next time.

Happy Birthday, Aaron Mathews. Travis Snider's recent injury to his side has been coincident with a hitting trough, but it probably will not be of any long-lasting significance. Curtis Thigpen and Sergio Santos have delivered early season performance which suggest that they may be contributors to the big club in 2008, but defence remains an issue for both of them.

Nice to see Russ Adams gradually (very... slowly) working his way out of his funk.

Completely out of left field: I'd like to see the Jays teach Adams to play third base.

I don't really get why they're playing him every day at second, unless it's just to leave him in a comfort zone so he can work on his hitting. What value does he have if second is the only position he can handle, other than as trade bait? Aaron Hill is entrenched. Troy Glaus is much more likely to get injured than Hill is, and the Jays don't have any real third base insurance that can also hit a bit. Why not see if Adams can be that guy? His K/BB numbers have always been good, and from September 2004 through August 2005 he sure looked like a big-league hitter.

When (okay if) Ray Olmedo gets called up, I might give Adams some playing time at short too. Maybe even most of it, if the plan is to leave Santos in AA at least for the whole first half. What is there to lose from trying to make him more versatile? Unless the front office has completely given up on Adams' offense, which I would consider a mistake.

I like the new eye that Olmedo is displaying.  He's never really had this good of a BB:K rate and if he can maintain it, he could be a depth lead-off player (i.e. normally bat 8 or 9, but when Reed is injured or takes a day off, he could move up and be a table setter).  I don't mind no power if he's can post a .350+ OBP.  Since I don't think he's ever really blown away AAA competition (he did well last year, but didn't exactly indicate he was beyond AAA level), I'd like to see him go a month or so more at this level and then I'd call him up and drop at least one of our dead weight at the majors (Smith, MacDonald, Clayton).

It's sample size, but what's interesting about Adams is his splits.  He's got an OPS of .945 against lefties and only .537 against righties and I could swear that he's a lefty himself.

Nice to see Thigpen doing well.  Outside of Auburn, he's never put up numbers like this

From what I understand, Adams didn't have the arm to play short, hence the move to second, so I doubt third base would work out too well.

I wouldn't mind seeing Adams learn left field, though.

I just don't think Adams is a Major League Player.  Too many errors, and his bat just doesn't cut it.  He may thrive in another organization, but not with the Jays.

Adams' arm wouldn't be strong enough for a move to 3B, which is why he was moved from SS to 2B in the first place.  I don't think Hill is necessarily entrenched at 2B either.  In fact, it wouldn't surprise me at all if Hill was moved to SS and Adams to 2B next year, if the Jays fail to pick up a SS via free agency or trade.  It also wouldn't surprise me to see Hill move to 3B to start 2009 if/when Glaus leaves, or before if Glaus is traded.  Hill has a good arm and his range might be a limiting factor at SS.

Olmedo went 2-3 with a walk in a Sky Chief victory today.  The D-Jays also came out on top.
Ryan Day - Thursday, May 10 2007 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#167702) #

Hey, Olmedo had an extra-base hit, too!

That's actually the one thing that bothers me about him: He's got virtually no power. I worry that ML pitchers will just throw hard stuff over the plate and knock the bat out of his hand.

Still, he'd be a definite improvement on Jason Smith, and probably on Clayton or McDonald.

Jesse Litsch, no hitter over seven innings tonight with 9 K's.

Graham Godfrey started for Lansing and pitched pretty well, he gave up two solo home runs.
