Two wins in three contests. The Syracuse bullpen lost the game while Dunedin won in the ninth. New Hampshire flirted with disaster but Lee Gronkiewicz saved the day. Adam Lind, John-Ford Griffin, Wayne Lydon, Chip Cannon and Eric Kratz hit home runs.

Syracuse 5 Durham 9

All good things must come to an end as the bullpen lost the game for the Chiefs. The Chiefs had trailed 4-2 after five but scored three runs in the sixth and seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Adam Lind drove in a run in the first with a double and homered in the sixth as part of a 2-4 game. John-Ford Griffin also went 2-4 with a homerun. Josh Banks started for the Chiefs and had a typical Banks start, four runs allowed in six innings including a home run allowed. But then Beau Kemp and Ryan Houston, with a John Hattig error, allowed Durham to score five runs in the eighth.

New Britain 6 New Hampshire 7

They did play ball in New Hampshire yesterday after a couple of false starts. Mike MacDonald started and as a Maine native would be familiar with the weather. MacDonald allowed three runs in the third but that was all he allowed in his 5 innings. The Cats scored three in the third, two of them on a Wayne Lydon home run. Eric Kratz added a two run home run in the fifth and Chip Cannon homered in the sixth. Tracey Thorpe almost lost the game in the eighth when he allowed two runs and left the game with the bases loaded and one out but Lee Gronkiewicz saved the day and the game. Eric Kratz was the only Fisher Cat with two hits.

Dunedin 5 Clearwater 3

Dunedin scored three runs in the seventh and two in the ninth to come back from a 3-0 deficit. Russell Savickas started and gave up three runs in 5.1 innings. Anthony Hatch tripled and drove in two runs in the seventh, and then scored on a sac fly. Hatch also singled and scored in the ninth when Eric Nielsen doubled in two go-ahead runs. Hatch, Nielsen and Anthony Garibaldi each had two hits.

New Hampshire fans are the most  loyal of fans.  The fans brought shovels to the field and helped clear the field of snow.   It  was a very cold  game even for fans from

Maine.

With today being Easter Sunday the schedule is very light, only Syracuse plays, at 5 pm, Ty Taubenheim gets the start.

I seem to remember there was talk of moving Anthony Hatch to 2B at the end of last season, but I see he's at third base for Dunedin.  Has that plan been scrapped?

And now for Sunday's minor league update....

Syracuse lost 6-2 in Durham in the only minor league game played on Easter Sunday.  Ty Taubenheim allowed two runs in the first and three more in the third and the Chiefs couldn't get back in the game.  Taubenheim gave up nine hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.  The Chiefs had five hits in the game, two by Mike Vento including a home run.

There are no stars awarded for this day.

Dick Scott did tell us last fall that the Jays had intended to move Anthony Hatch to second.  But the Jays do have a lot of second basemen, and a shortage of third basemen, so Hatch is playing third.  Hatch hit everywhere last season so this season could be a big one for him if he continues to hit.

Yesterday's game in Syracuse did not contain much of note for Jay fans, but for D-Ray fans, there was another fine pitching performance by a starting pitcher.  After Jason Hammel's 5 perfect innings on opening day and Jeff Niemann's solid start, lefty Andy Sonnanstine threw 6 innings of 2 hit ball with 8 strikeouts for the Bulls. I like Niemann and Sonnanstine quite a bit. The Rays days are coming, not in 2007, probably not in 2008, but then...

I think this weekend's series showed that the Rays offense is just about "there" in terms of being ready to be a player in the AL East. They are just 1 or 2 complimentary pieces away on that side.  If their pitching ever actually pans out (I still remember when Chad Orvella was going to be a great closer for them, and Seth McGlung was going to be a dominant number 1 starter), they could definitely make some noise.

Look for Hatch to be used as a roaming utility infielder.  He can play all four infield positions and the fact that he is a left handed bat with decent power and great plate discipline makes him a very intriguing prospect.

LugnutFan, any word if tonight's game will actually happen? I'm sure the Lansing players (especially Travis Snider) are getting pretty anxious to play already!

Lansing are playing tonight and Travis Snider has had an interesting progression.  Here are his at-bats so far.....

Strikeout

Ground out

Sac fly

Single

Double

Looks good for game one of A ball.

Yes, the Luggies did play and beat West Michigan 10-3.  Something must have happened to Yuber as he apparently has learned to work a count and take a walk.  Yuber went 1-2 with three walks, two runs scored and an RBI.  Brian Pettway was another offensive star going 2-5 with 4 RBI's.  He still struck out twice however.

Very nice MWL debut for the young man Travis Snider.

As far as how the rest of the week is looking, I expect the Luggies to play tomorrow, but Wednesday and Thursday may be a stretch as they are calling for 3 inches of snow here between Wednesday and Thursday.
