Apparently, at the end of the 2007 season, the Tribune Co. is going to put the Chicago Cubs up for sale.

Okay, we've got hundreds of regulars on this site, including about sixty lawyers, so let's figure out a way ... mostly Blue Jay fans here, granted, but surely there's something appealing to buying the Cubbies on the 99th anniversary of their last title?

So, how do we do this? Suggestions anyone? I've got a couple of $20 bills in my wallet (and that's American exchange) that I'll commit, but I want to be VP-PR & Marketing. Anyone else?

$600 million? The Nats brought $450 million (if I remember correctly), so the Cubbies at 600 is a bargain. Think of all the good things you could do with 600 million bucks. And instead, some bozo is going to give it to the Tribune in exchange for a ballclub. Ha ... what a riot.

As far as "doing some good" I agree, 600 million could do a lot better things than buy a baseball team. As a thought experiment, what happens if someone buys the team, and then says "I'm selling off the pieces and shutting the team down, starting up low income housing and community farming co-op in place of Wrigley". Can baseball force a team to continue to exist in some way, especially if the ballpark is owned by the team owners?

Oh, and I'm in for a few $100 if that's what it takes to get the BB Cubs ownership group over the top. Wasteful or not, my inner child would delight in owning a baseball team.

I'll throw in $20. I also call being President and GM. ;)
Mick Doherty - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 04:43 PM EDT (#165114) #

Fair enough -- Mike got "firsties" on the front office honcho-ship. Should I call you "boss"? Or is that too Yankee-esque?

Hey, we're up to more than $250 now, with AWeb the senior partner to date. Who else is in?

The only problem is, if we bought the Cubs, then we'd have the Cubs.
Fawaz - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 04:55 PM EDT (#165116) #
I'd be happy to chip in $20.

I will require a spot in the rotation.

I'll put in 20 bucks and call Team Doctor..,.hopefully I can get into med school and be a real one though.
JohnL - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 05:09 PM EDT (#165118) #

Well, I bought 20 shares (for $20) in the Toronto Maple Leafs AAA club. Now, more than 40 years later, I'm sure my investment must be worth a lot more. I'll see how much of the Cubs I can buy with my stock.

Hmmm, I wonder how much they're worth now...

Mick Doherty - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 05:28 PM EDT (#165120) #

Fawaz, sorry, roster spots will be earned solely on merit, though I realize that approach is not something the Cub fan base is familiar with ...

Unless your knuckle-curve is really darting, maybe you would settle for something more front-officey? CFO?

Hodgie - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 06:17 PM EDT (#165127) #

Hmmm, now just where did I put that Honus Wagner baseball card?

What the hell, I am always good for a few hundred so long as the title of CTO comes with the investment.

vw_fan17 - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 07:37 PM EDT (#165129) #
I'm in for $100 as long as I get to be G.M. or coach.

I call manager.

I'd also like to announce that I am looking forward to getting roughly 250 innings of work from each of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior.

CeeBee - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#165131) #
I'll go for a hundred or 2 but being so far from Chicago, and seeing that they don't play in Seattle I really need to find some way to retire and at least spend some time chasing our team around the country

The chance of owning a ball club?  Well, I have $1800 in my bank account and it can be counted on for our bid to own the team.  That's right, my entire worldly fortune is in the pot [including, if needed, my baseball card collection].

First order of business, trade Carlos Zambrano,  Rich Hill and Felix Pie to The Jays for Royce Clayton and an autographed commemerative 1993 World Series plaque.

I'll throw in $20 to be Chief Information Officer or Player to Be Named Later.

BallGuy - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 10:16 PM EDT (#165135) #
Here's $20. I call dibs on the PA announcer.
JohnnyMac - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 10:30 PM EDT (#165136) #
Count me in....$2000 and the Play by Play job.

I suggest we hire round the clock butlers for Wood and Prior so they can't hurt.

jeff mcl - Monday, April 02 2007 @ 10:39 PM EDT (#165137) #
Well, would we have to pay for additional WCs in addition to the franchise fee?  Wrigley is the worst part to pee in in all of the major leagues...
Mudie - Tuesday, April 03 2007 @ 08:18 AM EDT (#165140) #

I've only got $10 lying around now, so I'll just ask to be the batboy.

The Cubs now feature the only batboy that's larger than most player in the league, at 6'2" 230lbs, wow, what a sight!

Hamboy - Tuesday, April 03 2007 @ 01:21 PM EDT (#165169) #

I could probably scrape around $500 for Cubs... if it were BoSox, I'll be able to double the scraping, but it's only Cubs...

And if all possible, I would like Special Advisor to the General Manager position, please...

Lugnut Fan - Tuesday, April 03 2007 @ 07:14 PM EDT (#165185) #

I'll kick in $20 for the Cubs.  If any of you have ever been to Wrigley, that place is a gold mine.  We would have to shed some salary though.

If no one else has called it, is possible for me to be the clubbie?

coolbreeze - Tuesday, April 03 2007 @ 11:28 PM EDT (#165190) #
I'm good $100.  Since I'm probably closer to Chicago than any of the rest of you (I'm about a 3 hour drive from Wrigley), I think it might be good to put me in charge of day-to-day operations.  Although, and I feel must be upfront about this, I'm a Cardinals fan, but I will try to avoid any conflict of interest.
Lugnut Fan - Wednesday, April 04 2007 @ 09:39 AM EDT (#165203) #
Got you beat cool breeze.  2 hours and 15 minutes to Wrigley for me.
C Snoy - Thursday, April 09 2009 @ 09:45 AM EDT (#198082) #
I'm sure the Canadian Gov't would love to help us get our hands on the Cubbies.. So I will take the last 1500 or so from my student loan and toss it in the pot... Sounds like all the good positions are scooped up so I'll just sit at the end of the bench and eat sunflower seeds, offer some words of wisdom from time to time.

Either that or full time heckler, but I feel that could put quite a dent in my GPA
