Now the Mets beat the Cardinals?

Tom Glavine gets career win number 291. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to when he gets his 300th?

And the Jays, the Fighting Jays, open on the road against the defending AL champs. Whom no less than Peter Gammons and Jayson Stark have anointed as their pre-season pick to Go All the Way. ESPN's assorted experts have gone on record here. Just one of the eighteen is calling the Blue Jays to crack the post-season group.

And none of them - not a one - has any respect for the Showalter Effect?

Well, that's why they play the games.

Here's to an exciting season, win or lose. No matter what, as long as we don't have a repeat of 2004 (knock on wood!), we're in for 6 months of exciting, competitive baseball. Whether you win it all or not, it's going to be a fun ride! All that said....THE DOCTOR IS NOW IN!

For those interested in discussing the game during the game, the "Chat Is Where It's At".  If you look at the links under the Batter's Box banner on the far right there's a 'Live Chat' link.

As always, proper etiquette is appreciated.

I don't think anyone posted this yet, so here's a reason for optimism for today, at the very least:

Roy Halladay vs. Detroit Tigers, career: 10-2, 1.85 ERA, 87.1 ip, 5 CG, 4 SHO, 62 K, 7 BB.

At Comerica Park, you ask? 4-1, 2.19, 2 SHO, 25 K, 2 BB.

Game on.

How about a reversal of 2004?  I think it's only fair for the Jays to crush the Tigers hopes and dreams with a sweep in their home park to start the season.  I just remembered being so excited for that season to start after their strong finish in '03 only to have everything go to hell in a hand basket that opening week.

That's why I'm trying to temper my excitement this season.  If they can get 2 of 3 in Detroit or at least come back home from the opening road trip at .500, I'd be happy with that because Detroit will be tough and Tampa always seems to give the Jays a hard time at the Trop.  Regardless, I'm glad the best sport in the world is back.  Play Ball!

Jim Callis has an interesting response to a question about the 2000 draft in BA. Callis (and scouts) describe it as the worst draft in a decade.  The Expos under Beattie sure made out well though. After missing out with their first pick (Justin Wayne), they selected Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee, Jason Bay, as well as lesser talents Jeff Karstens and Shawn Hill.  They also were unable to sign a catcher out of Edouardo Montpetit High School named Russ Martin.  Now that's what I call a good draft...if only they had the wisdome to keep the talent.

Ack.  Is that what happens when you keep your skull closed?

For those media types hyping A-Rod as your 07 AL MVP ... two innings into the season, he has struck out with two runners on base and dropped a popup that led to an unearned run.

That is all.

Best regards,
"Small Sample Size Guy"

One might argue that a closed wisdome = lack of wisdom.

See, that's what happens when you watch too much bad science fiction.  "Wisdome" conjures up images of a bald guy with skull closed, instead of with skull open and brains leaking out.  Nevermind.

I guess the Colon trade worked out as badly for the Expos as the Langston trade of many years prior.

Wisdome

I thought that maybe the Washington Wizards were building a new stadium to play in.  But then I guess that would be the Wizdome.

A-Rod for MVP update (see above) ...

Yes, he homered today, after the Yankees had already stormed back to take the lead. That's our Mr. Clutch!
