Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine Batter's Box Interactive Magazine
This an exercise we went through last spring. This is last year's Predictions Thread! Not this Year's

Anyway, how did we do?

You don't really want to know.

(Here is the Original Invitation. Second thoughts and snide comments appear in italics.)

Don't be shy. Step up to the plate, Bauxites!

In the immortal words of Cyrano de Bergerac

Je vous ordonne de vous taire!
Et j'adresse un défi collectif au parterre!

And, like Inspector Clouseau, who among us can resist the chal-lenge? So:

1) give us the order of finish in the six divisions.
2) who are the two wild card teams
3) who are the two league champions
4) who is the World Series champion
5) who are the two MVPs
6) who are the two Cy Young winners
7) who are the two Rookies of the Year
8) Special tie-breaker - how many innings will Josh Towers pitch in 2007?

I have devised a Scoring System since originally posting, as follows:

Place of finish - 2 pts each (60)
Wild Cards - 3 pts each (66)
League Champs - 4 pts each (74)
MVP, Cy Young winners - 3 pts each (86)
Rookies of the Year - 2 pts each (90)
World Series winner 10 pts (100)

(This system proves to be a demanding, narrow and hard to master.)

This thread will be pulled as the first pitch of 2007 is thrown, only to be trotted out again after the World Series. At which point you can all make fun of me.

Although I'll almost certainly do a Status Report after the regular season ends, and we'll discover which Bauxites still have a Fighting Chance as we head into the post-season. (Hmmm. I didn't do that, did I?)

Second thoughts are permitted, until Opening Day. Should Albert Pujols suddenly decides to give up baseball and devote his life to fighting evil, we are allowed to revise our NL Central prediction. Even if he doesn't...

LOOKING BACK ON ALL OF THIS:

No one was able to score even 50% (I said this was a demanding scoring system), but we do have a winner. Everyone give it up for...

electric carrot

He scored 45 points. He had the World Series champs, which was 10 points right there. He also completely nailed the AL Central ( a perfect 10), and added 8 of 12 from the NL Central and 6 of 10 from the AL East.

A big and hearty round of applause and a No-Prize!

He edged out TheyCallMeMorty (43 points) and Michael (40 points). The top Roster rep, by the way, was Alex Obal whose 38 points landed him in a tie for fourth with Brian, a mere one point ahead of Thomas

And I, you ask?

You had to ask. Well, I seem to have finished in a four way tie for 30th place. With... uh... 17 points.

As it happens, seventeen is a lucky number for me - it's my birthday and all, it was my baseball number in Pony League back in the day.... but still.. Let's talk about something more interesting.

Did anyone pick the AL East correctly? Yes. The division was nailed by TheyCallMeMorty and Thomas.

The NL East was called correctly by williams_5. So he's got more to hang his hat on than... well, me.

No fewer than five participants accurately forecast how the AL Central would shake out. Kudos to electric carrot, Dave Rutt, Afterglow, tr0mbone, and Ron.

And two participants called the NL Central correctly - SNB and Brian.

But only AlexObal saw what was coming in the NL West.

And no one got the AL West. Hey, there's only four teams, how did that happen? (Hint - Oakland!)

As for the Bonus Points, the World Series winner was the big one. Banking on Boston were each of our top three finishers (electric carrot, TheyCallMeMorty, and Michael) along with AlexObal, ArmsLongfellow, and timpinder.

While Alex Rodriguez and Jake Peavy helped several participants score MVP and Cy Young bonus points (Sabathia and Rollins, not so much) - absolutely no one foresaw the coming of Ryan Braun and Dustin Pedroia.

Can I salvage anything from this... uh, debacle? Of course. I at least beat out Rob, my fellow 2005 Box rookie. I mock you, Mr Pettapiece, wherever you are! (Well, I know where you are, it's a rhetorical device, OK?) I point out that you actually scored fewer points than mylegacy, who didn't even bother to fill out a full ballot.

We take our comfort where we find it.

I am absurdly optimistic this spring.

AL East: TOR, BOS, NYY, BAL, TB
Al Central: MIN, CWS, CLE, DET, KC
AL West: TEX, LAA, OAK, SEA

NL East: PHA, ATL, NYM, FLA, WAS
NL Central: MIL, HOU, STL, CIN, CHI, PIT

Wild Card: Boston and Atlanta
League Champs: Texas and San Diego
World Series: Texas
MVP: Alex Rodriguez and Ryan Howard
Cy Young: Johan Santana and Barry Zito
Rookies: Alex Gordon and Chris Iannetta
Josh: 184.1 IP

In other news... Alex Rodriguez drives in 177 runs, challenging Lou Gehrig's AL record, but the Bombers' pitching completely implodes as they stumble to an 85-77 mark...while it's Kenny Rogers 7-12, 5.35 season that most people notice, it's the Tigers' offensive woes that are mainly responsible for them falling to 83-79...Texas wins 95 games and cruises in the AL West... Ron Washington is the obvious Manager of the Year, and the Showalter Effect kicks in yet again... All three NL races are too close to call, as we head into the final week with three teams vying for first in each division.... Barry Zito completely baffles the NL and Tim Linecum arrives just before the All-Star Break, as the Giants stay respectable with pitching... Randy Johnson does not recapture the old magic in the desert... the Mets, 13 games out and left for dead at the Break, charge back into the fray but come up short...

And for those of you wondering what I'm smoking... there are laws in this country. I can not tell you.

And, in other news:  Reed Johnson will increase his OPS by hitting 18 HR and 40 DB, while his OBP remains at 2006 levels.  (You first heard it here!!)  The additions to the bullpen will work extremely well.  With more swat in the line-up behind him (yes, those bats will come around), he will score 110 runs.  The team's weakest links will be Chacin, who will be replaced by one of Janssen or Zambrano within the next two months, and Rios, who will not regain his early 2006 swing until June, by which time some fans will start calling for Lind to replace him.  The Jays will try to trade Chacin, but as usual, will have left it too late to have him worth anything.  By June, Adams will have hit up a storm in Syracuse, and fielded 2b quite decently, leaving the Jays in a conundrum - do we bring him up, and switch Hill back to SS - again? (The short term answer will be no)  Syracuse will lead its league, leaving the city in utter consternation, with Taubenheim, McGowan, Banks, Lind, Roberts, Adams, Griffin, Houston, and Thigpen all stepping up, as you might hope that young athletes would.  Some Fisher Cats will show flashes of potential, amid the continuing gloom.

201.7

I guess my dartboard technique worked for my NL central choices last year. I have a feeling Josh will enjoy his time in the NL and have a decent 2005'esque year. But hopefully the tie breaker isn't needed. This may go like my over bet on total points for the Super Bowl.

Alright.. I'm going to take some risks.

AL East-  Tampa/Jays/Sox/Yanks/Orioles
AL Central- Tiger/Indians/Sox/Twins/Royals
AL West- Mariners/Angels/Rangers/A's.

NL East- Mets/Phillies/Braves/Nationals/Marlins
NL Central- Cubs/Brewers/Astros/Candinals/Reds/Pirates
NL West- Dodgers/D-Backs/Padres/Rockies/Giants

Two Wildcards- Indians and D-Backs
Two League Champs- Tampa and Los Angeles
World Series- Tampa Bay Rays
2 MVPS- Barry Bonds (Rays) and ... Orlando Hudson (why not?)

Two Cy Young Award Winners- Josh Towers (25-4 ERA- 1.45) and they just cancel the AL Cy Young Award and award it to Josh Towers because he's just so good.

Rookies Of The Year- Travis Snider (Called up on April 13th after the three-way collision in center field between Wells, Rios and Stewart, goes on to hit .350 with 61 Home Runs and 150 RBIs.) and one of the many Florida Marlins.

Innings Josh Towers will pitch-  270.  All thirty games he starts this season will be complete games.

If I'm right... I'll be a little scared.

Magpie - Wednesday, February 27 2008 @ 09:42 PM EST (#180379) #
By the way, the great Josh Towers Tie-breaker was not needed (unless we actually want to settle who finished fourth.) Towers pitched 107 innings last year. Which means that timpinder (112) would have won any tie-breaker he was involved in. Just nosing out groove (112.5) and zaptom (112 2/3).

Is anyone else wondering how a guy could pitch .5 innings? Uh, groove?

Magpie - Wednesday, February 27 2008 @ 09:47 PM EST (#180380) #
Now dogbus. I'm not questioning your pick of Josh Towers to win the AL Cy Young, even though he's currently with an NL team.  Between now and Opening Day, they could trade him and those compromising photographs of Mr Steinbrenner to the Yankees for Alex Rodriguez. It's baseball. Weird stuff happens.

Here's the thing - if Josh pitches 30 complete games, how does he go 25-4?

Riddle me that!

Geoff - Wednesday, February 27 2008 @ 11:39 PM EST (#180382) #
Here's the thing - if Josh pitches 30 complete games, how does he go 25-4?

Riddle me that!

Bud Selig declares one of Josh's games to be a tie, after 41 innings stretches into 4:17AM.

Then the question becomes how does Josh get 270 innings in 30 complete games if he pitched 41 innings in one of them? Eight games get rained out after five innings, of course. 21 complete games are the natural nine innings.

After his 41-inning shutout performance, Josh tells reporters, "I think I could have finished it out there. Some guys on the team just need to pick up their game if we're going to win these kinds of games."

jeff mcl - Wednesday, February 27 2008 @ 11:57 PM EST (#180383) #

In my defense, I think that poll option of Halladay at "25+ wins, World Series MVP" has people in a silly mood.  It's kind of like "what would you do with million gajillion dollars?"

It's kind of like "what would you do with million gajillion dollars?"

That's actually not a bad poll question.

We've been less ... relevant?

Thanks Magpie for all this work. And PS how did you know I was a guy? Could it be that it is _you_ who is the master prognosticator.

All the same despite the fact that we stunk as a group I am still happy to win the no prize for 2007, (getting lucky with CC Sabathia I think put me over the top.) And as a precursor to predicting madness that may follow can I just say that I have predicted the correct outcome for the blue jays finish the last two years and this year I say in a super tight race between sox, yanks and jays -- jays end up #2 in the East and the Wild Card team for the AL.

Yeeeeooowwww!

BTW I think you achieve 112.5 innings if you've pitched 112 1/3 but the coach takes you out with John MacDonald at the plate.

Just a guess.

We've been less ... relevant?

SIR! There is nothing, ever, in any way shape or form, irrelevant about Star Trek.  EVER. EVER!  EVER!!!

I am rebuked.

As I should be. Live long and prosper.

I was expecting that 'less relevant' link to be to the Gilmore Girls poll.

Apparently, Shawn Green has called it quits...He had a few great years as a Blue Jay and one of the most beautiful swings I have ever seen. (And maybe the greatest single game ever)

I was expecting that 'less relevant' link to be to the Gilmore Girls poll.

You mean this? Hey, that poll drew quite a heated response from Bauxites and is among the most-commented in the last couple of years' worth of polls. So there's some sort of relevance there.

Okay, granted about 60% of the comments were by Named For Hank ...
