Has there ever been a bigger birthday for MLB than October 20? That's a real question, and not just because today is my dad's birthday and we did an All-October 20 team a year ago.

Consider ...

Dave Collins (395 SB) was a nice player, but he pales in comparison to Keith Hernandez (.296, 11 straight Gold Gloves); neither holds a candle to Juan Gonzalez (two MVPs, .295, 434 homers through 2005) not to mention Hall of Famers like legendary Negro League 3B Judy Johnson and The Mick who is neither dad nor me, Mickey Mantle (.298, 536 homers). Oh, and on the hill? RHSP Juan Marichal was 243-142 on his way to Cooperstown. There were a few other decent players born on 10/20, but that group right there might just qualify today as The Day To Be Born for ballplayers.

Can anyone top today?

I got excited when I looked up Lou Gehrig's birthday (June 19) and saw Bob Gibson, alas, it was the other Bob Gibson. June 19 did, however, reveal this guy: http://www.baseball-reference.com/o/osboroz01.shtml

(btw, can someone tell me how to link pages?)

The June 15 club is pretty good:

SP- Andy Pettitte

C-   Lance Parrish
1B- Billy Williams
2B- Gene Baker
SS- Charlie Dexter
3B- Wade Boggs
LF- Dusty Baker
CF- Brett Butler
RF- Ken Henderson
DH- Tony Clark/Babe Dahlgren

Butler, Boggs, Baker, Williams, Ken Henderson, Parrish makes a very nice top 6 start to a long-sequence offence. The club would be a lot better if we had a solid defensive keystone combination. Pettitte needs a little help from his friends.

Here's a team Magpie could cheer for- the Aug 23 Lions:

SP- Guy Bush/Mike Boddicker

C-  Sherm Lollar/Johnny Romano
1B-Ron Blomberg
2B-Julio Franco
SS-George Davis
3B-George Kell
LF-Dale Mitchell
CF-Jerry White
RF-Casey Blake
DH- the other of Lollar/Romano

Not much of a power core, but there'd be 7 good hitters in the lineup and the defence would be OK.

August 31 is pretty good too:

1B- Von Hayes
2B- Jack Perconte
SS- Monte Cross
3B- Ray Dandridge
RF- Frank Robinson
CF- Claudell Washington
LF-  Danny Litwhiler

3 Hall of Famers and four other good players, but somehow it just doesn't seem so impressive.

I think that Keith Hernandez holds a candle to Juan Gonzalez.  I mean, he's Keith Hernandez!

I've got October 4. The less said the better.

Mark McLemore and Charlie Leibrandt are my standout players. I've also got Jimy Williams and Tony LaRussa at the helm. ugh.

Things are looking up though. I've got Jared Weaver and Tony Gwynn Jr. on their way up.

Go back a day and you've got 3 hall of famers; go forward one day and you've got 1 (though October 5 makes the 4th look pretty good). Dang.

Ryan/Robinson/Banks on Jan. 31 is pretty great, but when your best peripheral players are Ted Power and Fred Kendall ...

That June 15 club has the opposite issue -- "just" two HOFers, but with Baker, Butler, Parrish, Pettitte and Henderson (my all-time favorite player, as I have been dissed for admitting here previously) ...

And that 9/19 team is nice, too -- but I still think the 10/20 collection, Mantle, Marichal, Johnson, Hernandez, Gonzalez -- is the top entry. Of course, I am biased since it is my entry in the original story. Others?

I'm surprised it took so long for someone to call me on Hernandez/Gonzalez. But I think the statement stands ... Juando won two MVPs for a reason. Hernandez was a great player. Juando was a pantheon player headed to the HOF before his late career meltdown.

I agree with you, Mick.  Happy Birthday to Mike Sr.
