The red hot Adam Lind can now be considered white hot after a 4-4 night including his 24th HR of the year.

Runs were aplenty last night as the affiliates went 2-3.

Syracuse 8 @ Scranton-Wilkes Barre 9

Lind has now upped his batting line to .400/.504/.610 in 105 ABs for Syracuse. Expect to see Lind in a Blue Jay uniform on September 5th following the conclusion of Syracuse's season.

Could Adam Lind hit in the DH role or Alex Rios's role when he comes up? Or next year?

I'm really worried about Rios. Remember Clint Barmes? He started last year extremely hot for the Rockies, injured is shoulder while grocery shopping, came back with only like 1 month left, and cooled down. This year, not only did he not return, but he's hitting .226 in +400 AB this year. I didn't think Rios would have his timing and strength back right away this year, but he's been awfully poor, and he's not been hitting as many line drives, and swining at horrible pitches. I can only hope he puts on strength in the offseason and something clicks again. Otherwise next year's outfield could be Cat, Reed, Lind.

Hopefully Lind will be able to keep up this pace once he gets the the majors. As much as I dont like saying it, if he can hit like this in the pro's I really dont see a need for bringing back Catalanotto. Don't get me wrong I absolutly love the Cat and what he brings to this team, but with a tight budget I thing the money could be spent in other areas that we desperatly need. I have gained the trust of Reed Johnson to be a consistent everyday player, so why not spend the money on our pitching or middle infield? Of course that is only if Lind preforms well.

Bringing back Cat is all contingent on whether Wells is traded, or they bring in another hitter to play DH.  I would think that Cat is probably the best value they can get for their money, while meanwhile they can slowly break in Lind rather than rush him in to the lineup.  I'm also pretty sure that Wells will be moved for a hefty return.  Which would leave the outfield as Cat/Lind, Rios, Johnson, with one of them playing DH on most nights.  Not a bad setup.

The Eastern League of Professional Baseball is pleased to announce that New Hampshire Fisher Cats outfielder Adam Lind has been selected as the 2006 Eastern League Most Valuable Player. Prior to receiving his promotion to the Syracuse SkyChiefs of the Triple-A International League on July 25th, Lind was threatening to become just the fifth player in the history of the Eastern League to win the Triple Crown. In 91 games with Fisher Cats this season, the 23-year old hit .310 with 24 doubles, 19 homers, 71 RBI, 43 runs scored, a .543 slugging percentage and a .357 on-base percentage. At the time of his promotion Adam was leading the league in home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and extra-base hits and was ranked second in the league in batting average.

That is wild, wild news.  Thanks Marc, and congratulations to Adam Lind.

Re Adam Lind: I'm excited about this. Frankly, anything that reflects positively on the organization right now is sorely needed. Good news.

Re Alex Rios: I'm not worried about his injury (illness?). Will Carroll at BP hasn't commented on it very much, other than the rarity of MRSA infections amongst MLB players. Physically, he is a gifted athlete and I don't think his setback has changed that. On the other hand, I don't know enough to be able to tell from televised games whether his approach at the plate has changed...that is what I would be more concerned about, the mental aspect.

Too bad he is scuffling at AAA. :-).  It sure looked he was ready for the promotion.

I wonder how much of Rios's struggles can be attributed to physical weakness following his down time. Before his injury, he looked physically imposing (which I attributed to off-season training and physical maturation) and was driving the ball with authority. When he came back--and he spent a long time in hospital on an IV--he physically looked like he'd reverted to the skinny, more tentative Rios of old.

I expect him to get back on track next year. Maybe not to the tune of .330, but still high-performing.

Lind's winning the MVP award is great news. Amazing. I'm so used to the Jays' high-level prospects treading water this year (League excepted) that I'd almost forgotten what it feels like to see one blossom into a major talent.
Bruce Wrigley - Wednesday, August 30 2006 @ 05:15 PM EDT (#154333) #

It sure looked he was ready for the promotion.

With how he's hitting at AAA, the Jays should seriously look into moving him up two levels.

Just to refresh everyone's memory re: Lind...

2004: .312/.371/.477
2005: .313/.375/.487
2006: .310/.357/.543
ds - Wednesday, August 30 2006 @ 06:37 PM EDT (#154336) #

Well Rob, if you include all of his stats from this year to date, since I would think 100 at bats from AAA would have at least some standing:

2006: .331/.395/.558

Wow, an honest-to-goodness top-class hitting prospect. The last player to bounce through the system this quickly was Vernon Wells, who kind of turned out all right. :-)

What's fascinating about Lind's numbers is that his walk rate is much, much higher at AAA than AA. In AA, he walked 25 times and had 348 at-bats. At Syracuse, he has 23 walks (5 intentional) and 105 at-bats. I have no explanation for this, other than maybe that he is getting really good really fast.

Mylegacy - Wednesday, August 30 2006 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#154339) #

1)  Lind; truly GREAT news! Boy, do we need him.

2)  Rios; looks to me like he lost lean muscle when he was sick. He's got himself a busy winter to back his strength. I wish he would work out with Johnson or Halladay. In fact, I wish Lind and Rios could spend the winter working out with Johnson and the magic hitting machine he uses in the winter.

3) Cat; is a MUST sign. Whether Wells stays or goes Cat is either in Left or DH. AN ABSOLUTE MUST SIGN!

4) Halladay; Roy will be defferent next year. Last off-season he cut back on his work out regime because of his injuries in 05. This off-season he will find a better balance and be wonderfully fit next year. He is wearing down a bit this year. (IM{H}O)

JP said tonight on WWJP that he wants to keep Cat. He said the same thing about Speier, but was cautious about the possibility of having to "go young" with the bullpen. He didn't mention Lilly, other than to say he didn't clear waivers. He also said he saw Thigpen catching in '08 and that we needed a veteran behind the bench in 07. He said they can't afford both of the current catchers, but that they're going to need one and they're going to figure out which one is the better fit and get him. That's more encouraging news than I've heard in a while concerning Cat from him.

He also expressed a lot of faith in Gibbons and said he reminded him of a young Bobby Cox.

Graham Godfrey has signed.

"While the amount of the contract remains undisclosed at this point, Godfrey stated the contract met all of his needs and was on par for the average fourth round pick's contract."

JP, on the radio this morning, said Lind would be up tomorrow.

Congrats to Chatham's David Corrente for hitting the game winning 3-run home run for team Canada yesterday.  With the win, Canada advances to the second round of Olympic qualifying.
Pistol - Thursday, August 31 2006 @ 09:26 AM EDT (#154360) #

Godfrey was the team's 34th round selection.  I imagine he slid because of the bonus it would take to sign him.  As a draft eligible sophomore he had more leverage than the typical college player.

Godfrey is the 2nd player, that I know of, that the Jays drafted in the late rounds and signed for top 5 round money.  Kyle Ginley being the other.  In some respects they're the replacements for the picks lost for signing Burnett and Ryan.

Marc Hulet - Thursday, August 31 2006 @ 09:34 AM EDT (#154362) #
Along with the 16-year-old third baseman Balbino Fuenmayor the Jays just signed out of Venezuala for $1.5 million you really have to like some of the "risks" they've taken with young players this year.
Gerry - Thursday, August 31 2006 @ 05:31 PM EDT (#154388) #
Adam Lind and Kevin Barker have been promoted by the Jays.  Lind's promotion is no surprise.  Barker had a better year in 2005 than this year, but he has been the best hitter in Syracuse the last two years and the Jays are rewarding him.  I doubt he gets much playing time but he probably is happy to get another look after being out of the big leagues since 2002.
Gerry - Thursday, August 31 2006 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#154390) #
Most games are still young but both Curtis Thigpen and Chip Cannon have hit three run home runs tonight.
