Chi dominates, as the farm affiliates go 4-1 with the pitchers showing the way.

Syracuse 6 @ Rochester 8

The Sky Chiefs spotted Josh 4 runs in the third inning, but the Banks couldn't stand prosperity. Kevin Barker hit a 3 run homer in the inning and Luis Figueroa, who had 3 hits in the game, singled in a run. Banks gave up 2 back in the bottom of the third, 4 in the fifth and then 2 more in the sixth, and allowed 11 hits in 5.2 innings. Three Chiefs errors did not help. Mike Mahoney had 3 hits, and Russ Adams had 2. Chad Mottola hit a 2 out homer in the 9th to make the score a little closer. Adam Lind went 1-3 with a walk and threw out a runner at the plate.

New Hampshire 2 @ Portland 0

Mike MacDonald threw 8 shutout innings, allowing 8 baserunners while striking out 6, to lead the Fisher Cats to victory. Ryan Patterson hit a 2 run shot in the 2nd inning to supply the offence. Manny Mayorson chipped in with 2 hits, and is now hitting a solid .281, albeit with no power and little plate discipline.

Vero Beach @ Dunedin, 2, ppd, rain

Southwest Michigan 1 @ Lansing 4

Chi-Hung Cheng threw 5 shutout innings of 1 hit-ball to lead the 'Nuts to victory. Cheng walked 3 and struck out 8. As usual, thieving baserunners fared badly, with 2 thrown out trying to steal. There were no pickoffs yesterday. Ted Serro and Paul Phillips each contributed 2 solid innings of relief, with Serro punching out 3 of his own. Jesus (Gonzalez) didn't walk softly, but carried the big stick, with a homer and 2 singles in 4 plate trips.

Brooklyn 1 @ Auburn 2

Chris Reddout and Seth Overbey combined to hold the Cyclones in check. Reddout went 6 innings, and allowed a run on 6 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. Overbey threw 3 shutout innings for the long and difficult save, allowing 4 hits and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. Second baseman Scott Campbell doubled, singled and scored, while Catcher Brian Jerolman went 2-2 with a sacrifice. Brooklyn starter Tobi Stoner was mellow despite the loss.

Bluefield 3 @ Pulaski 7

Jonathan Jaspe's 3 run homer in the bottom of the third turned the game around, and the P-Jays made it a comfortable win with insurance runs in the 5th, 6th and 8th innings. Drew Taylor pitched brilliantly in relief of starter Matt Barbara. Taylor went 3.1 hitless innings, while walking 1 and striking out 4, and earned the win. Travis Snider went 1-3 with 2 walks.

Snider's OPS is now at 1.002.  I guess he adjusted quick to pro ball and wood bats.

Triple crown update: He leads the league in HRs (11-9), RBIs (40-37), and is third in BA (.343 to .333).

Curtis Thigpen has been promoted to Syracuse according to New Hampshire.

Oh geez, that seems like jumping the gun to me.  Thigpen is only hitting .259, albeit with an OPS of .790. Hasn't really shown much to get that promotion, but I guess we will see.

JP said on the Fan this week that Thigpen would finish the year in AA.

Weird.

O well, he's been killing lefties. Does anybody think that he can become a full time ML catcher? It seems most likely he'll end up as a platoon catcher against lefties.

Lind has posted better numbers at Syracuse than New Hampshire; perhaps the Jays hope Thigpen will catch whatever Lind has.

I also suspect the Jays desperately want to find out how close Thigpen is to being ready for the Majors. With the possibility of losing both Zaun and Molina, the Jays need to figure out who's going to be behind the plate in 2007.

Here's the Union-Leader game story on MacDonald's gem.
