It was another typical day in the minors with two rainouts, two pitchers struggling noticeably with their control, a shutout, a team effort on offence, a 15-hit performance, a case of batter’s interference and players faring differently with their adjustment to Double-A.

Ottawa @ Syracuse

Postponed due to rain.

New Britain 3 @ New Hampshire 7 - Box Score

David Purcey only went four and a third innings yesterday. Purcey kept his defence staring at their cleats, striking out eight batters, walking five and allowing a home run. He allowed three hits, but only the same number of earned runs, as he managed to strand four of the five batters he walked. New Britain stole four bases on Curtis Thigpen, three of them when the left-handed Purcey was pitching. Jordan de Jong threw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for the win.

However, Purcey’s struggles mattered little because of the 15 hits that the Fisher Cats pounded out. Dustin Majewski hit his fifth homer in Double-A, a two-run shot with two out, while Chip Cannon hit his 18th of the year and also made his 13th error of the season. Four Fisher Cats had two hits, as Tim Olson and Curtis Thigpen joined Cannon and Majewski in the club, while Manuel Mayorson had three. It was a game of stranded runners, as both teams left nine on base. Ryan Patterson and Ryan Klosterman both went 1-4 and are hitting .238 and .188, respectively.

Brevard County @ Dunedin

Also postponed due to rain.

Lansing 3 @ Dayton 0 - Box Score

In a 7-inning affair Lansing shut out Dayton behind the effort of Aaron Tressler. Tressler went six innings before Edward Rodriguez came in for his third save. Tressler struck out nine and walked two, improving his record to 8-4 and lowering his ERA to 2.06. Tressler’s making a strong case for a promotion and if he keeps pitching like this a trip to Florida will be in his near future.

Luke Hetherington hit a leadoff homer and that was all the offence Tressler needed. The Lugnuts scored another run in the second as Anthony Garibaldi singled, stole a base and came in to score on a Sean Shoffit single. Shoffit then stole a base, but was subsequently called out on the rare strike-em-out-call-em-out-on-batter’s-interference double play while Hetherington was batting.

Auburn 9 @ Vermont 5 - Box Score

Chase Lirette picked up his first professional win with four and a third innings of scoreless relief. Starter Chris Reddout allowed five runs, four earned, in three and two-thirds innings. Catcher Brian Jeroloman doubled his extra-base hit total with a double and a triple last night. Adam Calderone went 2-5 with two runs, while Benjamin Zeskind scored one in his 3-5 performance. Jonathan Baksh had two walks in addition to his single. Every Doubleday starter had a hit, but nobody had an outstanding line in what was a nice example of a total team effort.

Pulaski 4 @ Burlington 6 - Box Score

Michael Barbara came into today’s game with a 3.375 K/BB ratio. Unfortunately, the ratio of last night’s game was 0.333 K/BB and two of the three walks came round to score. Adam Rogers raised his K/BB ratio to an even 13 during his two frames in the middle innings. Roger Ebarb, who came into the game hitting .189, went 2-4 with a double, while Chris Emanuele went 2-4 with a home run and the two scored three of the four Pulaski runs. Travis Snider’s batting average dropped under .300 with an 0-4 night.

3 star selection

3rd star –  Chris Emanuele, 2-4, R, HR, BB, RBI, 5 TB

2nd star – Chip Cannon, 2-4, R, HR, BB, 2 RBI, 5 TB

1st star – Aaron Tressler, 6 IP, 6 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 9 K

Craig B - Friday, July 28 2006 @ 03:54 PM EDT (#151715) #

I remember that day like it was yesterday.  I was in the middle of transferring from Dalhousie to McGill and was working the easiest but most boring sales job possible, working for Maritime Tel & Tel selling long distance packages.  I would do twice my quota of calls and sales in the morning and then I would take a good sized lunch and futz around all afternoon, reading a book under my desk.

The game was on a Sunday - I don't think it was on TV - and I went over in Halifax to hit the used book stores.  Most of my friends were out of town (or had left to go away to school - hence my own imminent departure) and so I just sort of drifted around that day.  I think it may have rained, actually, and I distinctly remember going to the library.  Anyway, I was eating at Pizza Corner (probably a donair from European Food Shop) and thinking about heading home when I overheard some people talking, saying that El Presidente had thrown a perfecto.  I think I hiked up to the computer lab at Dalhousie to check out rec.sport.baseball, but that may have been on the Monday...
