Auburn were the only winners this night but they did win big with good pitching and hitting.  The starting pitchers for the top three teams had bad nights, Jamie Vermilyea, Michael MacDonald and Billy Carnline as each of those teams lost handily.  Lansing had good pitching but no offense while Pulaski made a late run only to have the tying run be thrown out at the plate to end the game.

Rochester 7  Syracuse 2 - 6 innings (rain)

Jamie Vermilyea didn't have his good stuff last night and allowed all seven runs in five innings.  Meanwhile Twins prospect Matt Garza won his first AAA game as he held the Chiefs to four hits in six innings.  The hot Wayne Lydon had a double and a triple and scored both runs.

Trenton 9  New Hampshire 2

The usually reliable Michael MacDonald gave up six runs in the first inning last night and the Fisher Cats could never recover.  MacDonald gutted out six innings giving up seven runs.  Chip Cannon and Manny Mayerson had two hits each for the Cats.  Ryan Patterson went 1-4 to keep his average at .316.

Dunedin 0  Brevard County 5

Billy Carnline, too, had a bad day, eleven hits and five runs allowed in five innings.  Dunedin only had five hits.

Peoria 3  Lansing 0

In this game the starting pitcher did make a quality start, seven innings, two runs for Kristian BellAaron Wideman pitched the last two innings as he works his way back off the DL.  Nine hits for the Lugnuts but no runs, Jason Armstrong, David Hicks and Luke Hetherington had two hits each.

Tri-City 1  Auburn 11

Zach Dials started and pitched a one-hitter over five innings.  Dials ERA at Auburn is down to 0.45; he has allowed only eleven hits in 20 innings.  Before you get too excited he has seven K's in those 20 innings.  Matt Liuzza had the only home run, a 3 run shot in the eighth.  Local player Jonathan Baksh went 3-4 with two runs and 2 ribbies.  Matt Lane and Ben Zeskind had two hits each.

Pulaski 4  Bluefield 5

Reidier Gonzalez started and gave up two or three runs in four plus innings, but he did have eight K's.  I say two or three becuase the box score says three but the game log says two.  In any event Derek Tate relieved  and gave up a grand slam.  Pulaski scored three runs in the last two innings and had the tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game.  Raul Barron and Luis Fernandez had two hits each for Pulaski.

Interesting article about the Memphis Redbirds that touches on an emerging topic -- the uncompetitiveness of Triple-A ballclubs becuase they're being used as taxi squads for the big-league team. This has been a sore point for Syracuse for awhile now.

Zach Dials is interesting.  He was drafted out of Kentucky in the 28th round last month.  He threw only 34 innings as a reliever for Kentucky in 2006. He's now being used as a starter.

Pistol's draft summary had the following comment:

"Dials has been up to 90-92, and has done so in front of at least a handful of upper-level scouting supervisors. He has trouble repeating his delivery. When he's online and gets extended toward his target, his fastball has some sink and armside run. He has below-average control."

Rosario started and pitched only two innings his last outing. He gave up a home run and a walk. Does anyone know why his outing was so short?
