With today being Independence Day in the US here's a look at the college players on Team USA.

The top college players each year play on Team USA. Here's a sampling of the players over the last few years:

  • 2005: Stubbs, Scherzer and Kennedy (for whatever reason most of the players ended up in the Cape League last year)
  • 2004: Zimmerman, Gordon, Tulowitzki, Clement, Romero, Hochevar, and Pelfrey
  • 2003: Street, Weaver, Verlander and Clement
  • 2002: Quentin, Jackson, Hill, Weeks, Cordero, Street, and Sleeth

Other Team USA alumni include: Oswalt, Prior, Burrell, Crosby, Garciaparra, Glaus, Helton, Mauer, McGwire, Mulder, Teixiera, and Sheets.

This year's team is made up of 1 junior, 14 sophmores, and 8 freshman. The sophmores will be eligible for next year's draft (and depending on their birthday possible a freshman or two).

Here's a look at the hitters (stats are from the 05/06 college baseball season):

What's interesting is that the six pitchers with the best strikeout rates are all left handed.

Four of the above players made BA's top 12 college prospects for the 2007 draft: David Price (1), Arencibia (5), Sean Doolittle (9), and Todd Frazier (12).

With numerous free agents and being unlikely to sign a premium free agent this offseason the Jays could end up with a number of high draft picks in 2007 and chances are decent that some of these Team USA players will find their way into the Blue Jays organization.

Speaking of the draft, we'll have an interview with Jon Lalonde up tomorrow on the 2006 draft.

Kieschnick? Weeks? Are these relatives of the recent major leaguers bearing those names?

Jemile Weeks is the brother of Rickie Weeks.

As far as I know Kieschnick is not related to Brooks.

Those are some lovely numbers for Weeks in his freshman year at Miami.

Apparently they are third cousins, so while they are related it isn't what I'd call a close relation.

Sean Doolittle, LHP and 1B? Where is his future, and was he inspired by this movie?

other info: ACC player of the year

I'd love to see a first baseman come in as the closer at the end of the game. Anyone who could do that successfully would easily be considered MVP material just for the difficulty factor. Although being a good setup guy or LOOGY would be almost as awe-inspiring.
