On our day, the Canadians in the Jay minor league system did pretty
well. David Corrente hit 2 sacrifice flies (how Canadian is
that?) and caught a shutout in a Dunedin victory, while Jonathan Baksh
doubled and singled and drove in 2 in an Auburn loss. The farm
affiliates went 4-2.
Syracuse 8 at Ottawa 7 (14 inns.)
Rob Cosby's RBI double in the 14th inning broke a 7-7 tie, as the Chiefs won a wild and wooly one. The Chiefs scored 2 runs in the top of the first inning on run-scoring singles by John Hattig and Jason Phillips. The Lynx took the lead off Dustin McGowan with single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings. McGowan left the game after 7 innings, having surrendered 3 earned runs on 11 baserunners. Dustin dusted six Lynx. Syracuse tied the game at threes in the top of the ninth on a Luis Figueroa double which sent the game to extras. Vinny Chulk and Brandon League each pitched 2 scoreless innings, with Chulk recording 2 punchouts to set the stage for a very interesting 12th inning. In the top of the frame, the Chiefs loaded the bases with nobody out on a walk, a Kevin Barker double and an intentional walk. John-ford Griffin drove in one with a single and Rob Cosby drove in another when he was hit by a pitch. Wayne Lydon capped the inning with a two-run single. Ryan Houston did not have it, and the Lynx replied with 4 runs of their own to keep the action going. Davis Romero came on to get the last out of the 12th, and then pitched 2 more scoreless innings for the win, allowing one baserunner and striking out 2. Griffin reached base 4 times, while Figueroa had 2 doubles and a single to lead the offence.
New Hampshire 4 @ Binghamton 6
The Fisher Cats ran into the Mike Pelfrey freight train and the outcome was not pretty. Pelfrey struck out 11 and gave up a run on 2 hits in 7 innings of work. Ricky Romero made his Eastern League debut, and was fine except for the 4th inning when the B-Mets went walk, walk, double, ground out, single, ground out, and 2 run homer for 5 runs off Ricky (the name "Ricky Romero" has been bugging me since he was drafted, and I just realized that it's the "Ricky Ricardo" association that does it- I did not love Lucy). Romero went 6 innings, allowing those 5 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks with 3 strikeouts. The Cats played when the Pelfrey was away in the eighth and ninth as Adam Lind hit a 2 run homer in the eighth and then an HBP and a single led to another run in the 9th but that was all. Chip Cannon went 1-2 with 2 walks.

Orlando Trias and Connor Falkenbach combined on the 7-hit shutout of the Miracle, with Trias going 6 innings (6 baserunners, 3 strikeouts) for the win and Falkenbach going 3 innings (3 baserunners, 2 strikeouts) for the long save. Eric Arnold doubled and singled and scored 2 runs, while Cory Patton reached base 3 times in 4 trips and drove in a run.

Why does seeing "HR-Mayberry (11)" for the opposition bring a wide smile to my face? I guess it's for the same reason that I root for Prince Fielder. The Lugnuts scored 6 runs in the bottom of the first, and pulled away in the late innings for another win. Anthony Hatch singled, doubled and homered and drove in 4, while Jacob Butler singled, doubled and homered and drove in 3 to lead the powerful Lug O. Sean Shoffit singled, tripled and walked and drove in 3 at the top of the lineup, while Yuber Rodriguez continued his summer rise with 3 more hits. Josh Bell had 2 hits and threw out 2 Lumbering King baserunners. Sean Stidfole started for the Nuts and went 3 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 6 baserunners. Lefty Jordan Timm followed and went 4 solid innings of relief for the win. Po-Hsuan Keng threw 2 scoreless inning of mop-up work with only a solitary walk blotting his record.
Auburn 10 @ Jamestown 12
The Jammers scored 3 runs in each of the 7th and 8th innings off Auburn reliever John Tritz to erase a 9-6 Doubleday lead. Brian Bull started for the Doubledays and has had better days. Gabriel Alfaro threw 3 shutoout innings as Auburn rallied in the middle innings. 1st rounder Brett Sinkbeil started for the Jammers and the Doubledays did not treat him too kindly, as Luke Hopkins went yard off him and doubled later in the game. Third baseman Scott Campbell went 3-5 with 2 ribbies, while catcher Matt Liuzza reached base 4 times in 5 plate trips.
Pulaski 6 @ Kingsport 5
The P-Jays scored 4 in the 4th inning to tie the game and then 2 in the 8th to break the deadlock. Wes Stone singled, and after 2 fly outs, a Travis Snider single, a Heliezer Aguilar double and a Josh Lex single plated the deciding runs. Lex had 3 hits, while Snider, Aguilar and Yohermyn Chavez had 2 each. Adam Rogers and John Zinnicker pitched well in relief, with Zinnicker striking out 3 in 2 scoreless innings for which he was rewarded with the W.
