A Jay exploits the AAA landscape.

In his first game action since April 21, A.J. Burnett mowed through the Columbus Clippers for 5 no-hit innings, striking out 7 hapless Yankee wannabes, walking 1, beaning 1. A.J. threw 67 pitches, 40 for strikes and 1 wild, and the batters that didn’t strike out hit 6 grounders and 2 fly balls.

Jamie Vermilyea followed Burnett and notched a 4 inning save. While he did allow 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 base hits, he one-upped the ringer by striking out 8 and not issuing any free passes.

This one was over early as the SkyChiefs threw up a 7 in the bottom of the 2nd, featuring dingers by Chad Mottola and Kevin Barker. It was part of a 2-hit night for both of them, and they were joined in that department by Sergio Santos and Rob Cosby. John Hattig smacked 3 doubles, while Cosby’s hits were also of the 2-base variety and were complemented by 2 walks.

New Hampshire: Scheduled off day.

Lakeland @ Dunedin: Postponed, rain.

The Lugnuts only had 4 hits on the night as they were felled by the Timber Rattlers. 3B Anthony Hatch had 2, including a double, and also walked. 2B Sean Shoffit and RF Jacob Butler had the other 2, and each also drew a base on balls.

Russell Savickas started and threw an ineffective 5 innings, 4 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks. Adrian Martin followed with a fab 4, 3 hits and 4 strikeouts.

Three Star Selection!

The Third Star: John Hattig, Syracuse. Double. Double. Double.

The Second Star: Adrian Martin, Lansing. 4 innings of shutout relief.

The First Star: A.J. Burnett, Syracuse. Out of his league.

There is one thing that I think is going on in Lansing that is going mostly unnoticed and that is the arm of Briam Bormaster.  Bormaster threw three guys out trying to steal last night and has thrown out 63% of all base runners trying to steal on him (24 / 38).  Not bad for a guy that didn't start catching until his sophmore year in college.

Can we get a stay hot for Brian Pettway?  He has struck out 77 times so far this season.  He is on pace to shatter the franchise's strike out record in Lansing.

Quick note on Santos.. He's currently on a 19 game hitting streak.. Just something to watch for.

.266/.286/.376 might not seem like much, but it is a significant improvement from his totals of .400 OPS earlier in the season. (For Santos).

The Syracuse Post-Standard today  tells us that Burnett will be making his Saturday start for Syracuse against Columbus.  Perhaps there has been a change of plans since the New Hampshire article was published yesterday.

There is a good description of Burnett's repertoire yesterday in the linked article.  The only concern seems to be whether he feels OK today.

Lots  of action in the minors tonight.

Josh Towers has pitched six innings allowing one run on four hits.  Towers gave up the run on three hits in the first inning, since then he has allowed one hit in five innings.  The Chiefs are down 1-0 after six and have only two hits off Humberto Sanchez, the hard throwing Tigers prospect.  One of those hits belongs to Sergio Santos to extend his streak.

Kurt Isenberg and the Fisher Cats are also down 1-0 in the sixth.  The Cats are being no-hit so far but they did turn a triple play in the sixth.

Dunedin's Jesse Litsch pitched a seven inning shutout in game 1 of the DH, Ricky Romero has a six inning shutout going in game 2 as Dunedin goes for the sweep.

Lansing are winning 4-2 behind Aaron Tressler as Josh Bell and Brain Pettway have homered.

Blue Jay Way for Syracuse
At their regular meeting Monday, the SkyChiefs' board of directors voted to renew Syracuse's Player Development Contract (PDC) with the Toronto Blue Jays for two more years through the 2008 season.

The Blue Jays still have to approve the PDC, but Toronto officials have repeatedly said that they want to return to Syracuse.

The board considered dropping Toronto, but it was concerned that it would end up with a team it didn't want, such as the Brewers or the Nationals.

Syracuse and Toronto are in their 29th year together, making their partnership one of the longest in the minor leagues.
