The Alfonzo Watch is over. Russ Adams is back from Syracuse and John McDonald is back from the disabled list. Luis Figueroa has also been sent back to Syracuse, lowering the number of Gibby's Boys on the active roster by two.

So, Adams and Aaron Hill are still the double play combo for your Fighting Jays, just in reverse.

I never thought I would miss McDonald's bat, but that's what happens when your favourite team signs a guy who's beyond done. McDonald's lucky to hit .250/.300/.320, whereas Placeholder's final Blue Jay batting line was .bad/.worse/.terrible.

Part of me wants to feel bad for Placeholder, who's been a pretty classy act over a long career and deserves to be remembered for the very fine player he was for so long.  Then I remember that little half-walk/half-waddle he gave after a rolling groundball just to the left of straightaway second, against the Orioles the night he almost killed Aaron Hill on a brutal DP exchange.  He pulled up; even the act of pretending to run after the groundball, let alone dive for it, was too much for him.

And then I don't feel so bad for him at all.

Well, it took until June 12th 2006, but the Blue Jays have finally decided to do what the majority of Da Box has suggested since about May 2005...

As a farewell to Edgardo Alfonzo, here's a photograph of his final hit as a Blue Jay.

According to Blair, Gibby is mulling over using Glaus at shortstop more often to keep both Hillenbrand and Lyle Overbay's bat in the lineup.

Am I the only person that hopes Gibby doesn't actually use Glaus at SS more often?

If they're not going to bounce Aaron Hill around the infield, which I think is a bad idea in and of itself, the choice of who to sacrifice is actually between Hill and either Hillenbrand (versus RHP) or Overbay (versus LHP).  I don't think that the gain of Hillenbrand/Overbay against their weaker side, as opposed to Hill in the same place, is worth the difference defensively between Glaus and Hill.  Add in the fact that Glaus didn't look assured at shortstop and the extra running around isn't going to do his back and knees any favors, and the fact they Troy's a better third baseman than Shea Hillenbrand to boot, and I think the idea doesn't have legs.

We've already seen Aaron Hill come close to serious injury thanks to Alfonzo's rustiness at second base... if Troy Glaus is on the receiving end of a bad relay, does he have the physical skills anymore to avoid it?  And if you shift Aaron Hill back over to second base after he's been readjusting to shortstop, aren't you inviting just that to happen?

If it were Luis Figueroa who was playing shortstop, I'd consider the switch.  Our shortstop is on fire, though!

(OK, the *Jays'* shortstop is on fire.  Fine.)
