Wrong kind of funk. That's what happens when you stay at home on
a Saturday night. The farm affiliates went 1-3 for the second
straight night, with only Lansing ending up on the winning end.
Columbus 16 @ Syracuse 7
The Chiefs broke out to a 6-0 lead with 4 runs in the first and 2 runs in the second, behind homers from Chad Mottola and Kevin Barker, but the wheels came off for David Purcey in the 3rd inning. The Clippers started the inning with a homer and then two singles. Two walks, a hit by pitch and a single later, Purcey was gone from the game. When the inning was done, Columbus had put up a nine spot. Four more in the 5th inning put the game out of reach. Jason Phillips went 3-3 with a walk, and drove in a run with a double. Mottola added a double to his homer, and Russ Adams went 1-5. Purcey's 7 earned runs in 2.2 innings is a little deceptive. He gave up 6 hits and walked 2, while striking out 4. Jordan DeJong followed Purcey and was roughed up even worse. Ryan Houston restored order for 2.1 shutout innings, before Ben Weber closed out the game and was tagged for 3 earned runs in 2 innings on 4 hits and a walk.
Altoona 7 @ New Hampshire 3
Three Fisher Cat errors led to 4 early Altoona unearned runs, and the Cats couldn't claw their way back into the game. Ismael Ramirez had a rough outing, giving up 6 runs (2 earned) in 4 innings on 5 hits and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. Brian Wolfe, Danny Hill and Connor Falkenbach held the Curve without losing grip the remainder of the game. The Cats banged out 13 hits with two each by Adam Lind, Curtis Thigpen (who was back behind the plate), Ron Davenport and Brad Hassey, but left 12 men on in the game.
Tampa 10 @ Dunedin 8
It's a bad omen to give up an exponential sequence of runs allowed in consecutive innings. The D'Jays gave up 1 in the 5th inning, 2 in the 6th inning and 4 in the 7th inning, as they fell behind 8-1. A 5 run rally in the bottom of the eighth left them a run short, and two Tampa runs in the top of the ninth put the game out of reach. Ryan Klosterman doubled, tripled, was hit by a pitch and stole a base, and scored 3 runs to lead the offence, while Ryan Patterson doubled, singled and walked and drove in two. Eric Fowler started and went 5.1 innings, allowing 4 runs, 3 earned on 8 hits and 1 walk with 4 strikeouts. The relief crew had a tough night with Danny Core, Derek Tate and Milton Tavarez all struggling.
Wisconsin 2 @ Lansing 4
The Lugnuts scored a run in the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie on a Jesus Gonzalez walk, stolen base and a Brian Bormaster double, and added an insurance marker in the 8th inning on a Brian Pettway double and Anthony Hatch's 4th hit of of the night. Chi-Hung Cheng started and went 6 innings, and allowed 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Sean Stidfole pitched 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts to celebrate his brother's signing and garnered the win. Paul Phillips surrendered a hit and nothing more in the ninth for his 11th save. Pettway doubled twice and walked in 4 plate appearances.
