Yes, that's my headline.

Three runs was the most scored by any of the minor league teams last night, and even that required an Ontario kid to come up with a hit in the final inning. We've got a rainout, a rain delay, a rain-induced doubleheader and...well, our Third Star today is the rare ballplayer whose first and last names both contain the letters r-a-i-n.

Syracuse was rained out in Ottawa. What, no snow?

New Britain 5 @ New Hampshire 3

This one was delayed due to rain in the top of the 8th.

Through then, Michael McDonald had, well, a lot of ground balls. He went 7 innings and had 13 of them, along with three strikeouts. Unfortunately, four runs (two earned) came along with that and the F-Cats' offense isn't Murderer's Row. More like Marble Rye Thief's Row.

Curtis Thigpen tripled home two runs with two out and Carlo Cota and Miguel Negron on base in the second. I wonder how many catchers can actually hit a triple...

After the game resumed, the Rock Cats added another in the 8th to make it 5-2...and that was about it.

Dunedin 0 @ St. Lucie 1 (7 innings, Game 1)

A complete game for Jesse Litsch as he goes the "distance" giving up just the one run over six innings. That run came in the second after a two-base error by the first baseman and a sac fly, though. However, it was almost 1-0 in the first inning when Ambiorix Concepcion hit one to CF and raced around second...then around third. He was thrown out at home trying for the inside-the-parker.

The D-Jays were shut out on four hits. One of those hits, naturally, came from Ryan Patterson who is hitting .331 now after what appeared to be a slow start. Moral of May: you won't be hitting .250 forever. My boy David Corrente came up in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded, but he flew out to end the first game.

Dunedin 3 @ St. Lucie 2 (7 innings, Game 2)

Ron Davenport
hit a two-run homer to open the scoring, but I've got to give props to David Corrente again. He came up in the seventh with runners in scoring position once again, and this time he singled to Jamar Hill rather than flying out to Jamar Hill. That made it 3-1 Dunedin, which is all they needed. This time, the four-hitter was from Ricky Romero (4.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K in his third start), Official Pitcher of Thomas Ayers Connor Falkenbach (one perfect inning) and Brad Mumma (well, one batter). Romero, however, gave up nine fly ball outs against zero groundouts.

Lansing 2 @ Burlington 7

A five-run fourth did it for the Nuts yesterday afternoon. Kristian Bell fell apart, it seems, after a couple of good innings when he hit a couple of batters, gave up a homer and uncorked a wild pitch. So it's your basic Jeff Weaver inning, despite the fact that Bell didn't start off with two quick outs before the bad times started. Adrian Martin stranded all three runners Bell left on, and allowed just one run over the fifth, sixth and seventh -- and that was on a double play groundout.

Brian Pettway
(double), Anthony Hatch (single) and Brian Bormaster (double) combined for the two runs Lansing scored in the fourth inning. Bormaster also had another single, making him the only multi-hit member of the Lugnuts in the game. Also, the attendance was a powerful 494 -- good ol' Low-A ball.

Three Star Selection:
3.
Adrian Martin
2. Ricky Romero
1. Jesse Litsch

Thigpen was 1-1 last night.  Did he leave the game early?  No, he just had 4 walks.  His BA is .255 and he only has one HR - that doesn't look so hot.  But his OBP is .397 and he's slugging .473, and has three doubles and three triples in 55 ABs.

The SkyChiefs and Lynx are continuing their game from last night.  They're leading 7-2 right now in the bottom of the 4th.  Kevin Barker has 2 homers in the game, including a 3 run shot this morning to give the 'Cuse their 5 run bulge.  The play-by-play call was "Come on Down, Kevin Barker!".  At least it's better than "A-B-C ya later".  To follow along on Game Day, you have to go to yesterday's page.

Or if you prefer, connect here to listen to a double A catfight between New Britain and New Hampshire.  They're in the middle innings now.

It's becoming a nail biter in the Nation's Capital.  Old friend Howie Clark has belted a 2 run shot off Vinnie Chulk to make it 7-5 now for Syracuse in the 5th.  It hasn't been a good day for Chulk or Brandon League today.   League gave up 3 runs, all earned, on 5 hits and a walk in 2.2 innings, but he did punch out 3 batters.  The game is now headed for the top of the 6th.

It's now 13-10 Chiefs in the ninth.  Kevin Barker has put up the boxscore line of the week: 6 5 6 7.  Included in his 6 hits are 2 homers and 2 doubles. The second game (the daycap?) features a nice pitching matchup David Purcey vs. Hayden Penn.  Heck, I could grab a flight from the island airport and be there by the 4th inning...

Matt Garza made his double A debut for New Britain today against the F-Cats and it was a good one. He shut 'em down into the 8th inning with 13 Ks.  Rocks over Fishers 4-1.

A heck of a football game today at Lynx Stadium as the Syracuse Orange held on to beat the Ottawa Renegades 13-10.  Both football clubs would've been jealous of that offensive outburst by their baseball counterparts.

Kevin Barker's hitting line wasn't too shabby - 6 5 6 7, including 2 homers, and he just missed out on a .300 batting average by a point.  I'm guessing unless someone throws a no-hitter, Barker will probably get star number one in tomorrow's minor league update.  Vinnie Chulk "earned" the victory in this one.  I thought it should've gone to Ben Weber seeing he and Tallet were the only ones to get through unscathed today and Tallet couldn't get the win because he got the  save.  I wish I called in sick today, I could've seen most of a doubleheader.

Heck, even if someone does throw a no-no, I'd still give it to Barker!

Odds that a pitcher throwing smoke (.200 AVG) puts down 27/27 = 413-1 against   Odds that a really good hitter (.333 AVG) goes 6/6 = 728-1 against   I know someone in the Jays' organization goes 6-for-6 every week these days (Ryan Patterson, I'm looking in your direction) but I think that historically it's rarer than a no-hitter - certainly in a 9-inning game.  I could be wrong.

...but I think you're right.  Tony Gwynn had one six-hit game in his career.

For one thing, how often does a batter get 6 ABs in a game?  It can't be more than 25 times in a season, and that perhaps for a leadoff hitter who won't take a walk on a powerhouse club.

Well, I did a quick check on retrosheet.org (using the top ML individual performances) and it isn't quite so clear cut.  In the last 10 years, there have been 14 no-hitters and 14 6-hit games.  2004 was very strange, as there were 6 6-hit games (did the devil make 'em do it?) including one by the Cat.

Hello again,
I recently updated the photo gallery w/ pics from the Fisher Cats/Rock Cats games from yesterday and today. I uploaded many Matt Garza pictures so far and will be adding many of the Fisher Cat players tomorrow. As most of you may know, Matt Garza made his Double-A debut today here in Manchester, NH against the Fisher Cats. What a gem, Wow! What can I say? I've seen Liriano take a no-hitter into the 6th here in Manchester. I saw Verlander 'K' the entire city and if memory serves me, he struck out the 1st 7 or 8 batters in that game. Now this....Matt Garza pitched a gem. He gave up a single to the lead off batter, Miguel Negron, and sailed all the way into the 8th. In the 8th with two outs he walked a batter and was immediately pulled. Garza's fastball topped out at 93, (guns are funny) but seemed much harder than that. He finised the game w/ 13 K's and 2 BB's. What really made this kid look special was his composure, competitive nature and especially his off-speed stuff. He threw mostly 89-92, but his off-speed stuff ranged from 73-83. Tell me that's not awesome. I don't care if it were the Bad News Bears he was facing. Garza was in complete control and looked spectacular!

Adam Lind took one AB and left the game. I'm not sure why at this point, but hopefully it's not a serious injury. The Fisher Cats are having a hard time scoring runs as it is. By the way, Ryan Patterson would sure do wonders up here right now, NO? I say, bring him up while the fire is burning! Check back with the gallery now and then, because I'll be adding more pics.

Thank You & Enjoy!
