BARFIELD DIVISION:

Magic 9 hypnotized Jick’s Rays into losing 3-9-0 and hopped from third to first. The Moscow Rats followed behind, jumping from fourth to second with a 10-2-0 defeat of the Vancouver Cyphers. In last week’s marquee matchup, the Burlington Mazsters thumped the Pohnpei Papayas 7-4-1. The Papayas’ 6.51 ERA contributed to four pitching losses. This week’s hot matchup: #2 Rats vs. #8 K-Town Mashers.

I vote we go roto next year!

Seriously, a hard fought 5-5-2 draw this week against the Cooney Islanders.

MVH: Shea Hillenbrand continues to accept his role as DH by Hing a 6/6/0/440/517/680 line. Runner up: Godzilla starts the year like a lamb as usual so 5/6/0/348/464/696 is long overdue.

LVH: Hank Blalock hit more like Jolene this week, .192 .300 .231. He does earn the Joe Morgan Clutch Award this week by some how hitting five RBI, a category the Monkeymen won by two. Runner up: O-for-4-Dog goes 0/2/0/238/385/333. Good D though.

MVP: A number of good to mediocre performances this week. Tom Glavine had a great game: 7.0 IP, 1 BB, 10 K and the win. Runner up: Kevin Millwood pitched a complete game, two runs, 0.67 WHIP.

LVP: Jesse Crain continues with Josh Towersesque numbers 2.2 innings, 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP. Still maintaining a great K/BB rate which is the only reason he's not Waiver Wire Fodder. Yet. Runner up: Free agent pick up Angel Guzman with an uninspiring 10 innings for the uninspiring Cubs. Maybe Dusty will get one of his hunches and turn things around.

This week’s matchup: #14 Thunderbirds vs #16 Billie’s Bashers. A decisive win will put one team back in the middle of the pack and the other near the bottom.

But not AT the bottom! No, that's the exclusive domain of my Eastern Shore Birds! It's mine, all  mine! Bwa ha ha.

In other news ... the Birds picked up Grady Sizemore in exchange for Josh "Blisters" Beckett and Juan "Phenom" Cruz. We really needed the bat. Scott Olsen and Gavin Floyd were claimed to fill out the pitching staff. Olsen will join Bruce Chen on the bench until he puts together a couple good outings or I tire of his presence, whichever comes first.

My players determined that Mientky was a Jonah and I quickly banished him from the roster. Aramis "I'm not Beltre" Ramirez immediately began to hit and flowers bloomed all around beautiful Bird Nest stadium. Mientky was replaced by Reggie "REGGIE REGGIE" Abercrombie, who has actually drawn a few walks and hit some doubles lately.

From the bottom of the Alomar standings, this is 3RunHomer reporting. Good night and good luck.
Jonny German - Tuesday, May 09 2006 @ 09:55 AM EDT (#146552) #
While the Mashers were happy to come away with a 7-4 victory over the first place Wonders, they're wondering what could have been if the manager was a little more astute. He picked up Tyler Walker a couple hours too late to have his Sunday save break the the tie in that category, and benched Mark Grudzielanek rather than Esteban German - with German's 0-for-5 and Grudz's 2-for-4, reversing that would have swung AVG and OBP over to K-Town. Add it up, it could have been a 10-2 week. But really, given that they didn't start hitting until Friday, the Mashers have nothing to complain about.

MVH: Jimmy Rollins left the April doldrums behind with a 9-4-1 .276-.364-.621 performance, including a very clutch triple and steal in the Sunday night game. Honourable mention to Mike Cuddyer, who at .421-.450-.684 is making it very hard for the Twins not to play him regularly.

LVH: Kaz Matsui scored just 1 run and hit .154-.154-.308 on his way out of K-Town.

MVP: Brad Radke delivered an overdue 7 dominant innings (even if it was the Royals). Funny how I thought I was making a safe pick when I took him in the 11th round... Risky picks Magglio Ordonez and Austin Kearns are turning out just fine, thank you very much. Back on the subject of MVPs, Honourable mention to Dan Miceli for getting hurt and making it easy to punt him.

LVP: Nobody completely stunk. I guess I'll give it to Danny Haren for his really bad ERA and WHIP in 5-2/3, but he did help out in K/BB.

King Rat - Tuesday, May 09 2006 @ 02:06 PM EDT (#146574) #

Great. We're in the featured matchup. No pressure, boys...

As for last week, it was a good week all round, and picking the joke awards is going to be trickier than usual, without further ado, then...

The CARLOS DELGADO AWARD goes this week to Chipper Jones, who scored 6, drove in 3 and stole a base while hitting at a .370/.485/.481 clip. An honourable mention goes to erstwhile whipping boy Scott Podsednik, who scored six times and stole four bases.

The KEN HUCKABY AWARD appropriately goes to a catcher this week, as Michael Barrett scored none, drove in none and stole no bases while hitting for an anemic .222/.391/.333.

The ROY HALLADAY (2003 edition) AWARD goes to Jason Schmidt, who threw a complete game five hit shutout, with honourable mentions to Brandon Webb and the now departed Victor Zambrano, who were both nearly as good over slightly fewer innings.

The ROY HALLADAY (2000 edition) AWARD goes to Kyle Lohse, who turned in an atrocious 15.75 ERA in 4 innings of work with a stratospheric WHIP of 2.50. We'll hope for better this week.

This week: A hotly anticipated showdown with the Mashers. All I can say is, as always, Beware the Rats.

Jacko - Tuesday, May 09 2006 @ 03:52 PM EDT (#146586) #
My team (Cooney Islanders, Barfield) had a nice week, but only managed to eke out a 5-5 tie.  I'm sure the Monkey Men were similarily disappointed.  A weaker opponent for either of us would have resulted in a  lopsided victory.  Oh well, at least I didn't fall further below .500...

Bonds: hard to pick between Thome (333/500/857) and Hafner (320/414/800).
Neifi: Brandon Phillips has turned back into a pumpkin (125/160/125)
Pedro: Welcome back CC!  2 wins, 0.69 ERA, 1.23 WHIP
Lima: I thought Rich Hill would do better in his second tour of duty, not an  ugly11.25 ERA and 2.00 WHIP

Jacko - Tuesday, May 09 2006 @ 03:54 PM EDT (#146587) #
LVP: Jesse Crain continues with Josh Towersesque numbers 2.2 innings, 10.13 ERA, 1.88 WHIP. Still maintaining a great K/BB rate which is the only reason he's not Waiver Wire Fodder. Yet. Hey, we were both victimized by sucky Cubs rookie pitchers!

Wow, after the first two weeks the midgets have really fallen in the tank.  The past three weeks have all been neck and neck right down to the end but we've come out on the short end each time.  Jeff Francoeur continues to frusterate on a regular basis while managing to salvage his week on the last day.  Adam Dunn owns a remarkable 248/404/615 line coupled with the revolving shortstop of doom and the unproduction of A-Rod has the hitting lines performing well below expected.  Pitching has turned out to be equally annoying as well.  Oswalt has been the only constant with Peavy, mini Santana, Kazmir and Cabrera all making me tear my hear out on a weekly basis.  I'm definately looking forward to the BJ Upton call up as well as Cole Hamels.
