All four farm affiliates were visitors, and two were kind to their hosts.
Syracuse 2 @ Scranton 0
The Chiefs did it with pitching. Shaun Marcum threw 5 innings of shutout ball, allowing 5 baserunners and striking out three. The relief crew of Ben Weber, Adrian Burnside and Game Over Gronk outdid him- 1 hit, no walks and 8 strikeouts in 4 innings. Sergio Santos doubled and scored the first Syracuse run on a Kevin Barker sacrifice fly. The Chiefs added an insurance marker on a Chad Mottola run-scoring double in the ninth.
New Hampshire 2 @ Binghamton 3
The Fisher Cat offence came to life in the late innings, but it was too little, too late. Chip Cannon's ninth-inning homer brought the Cats to within one, but a Vito Chiavarallotti single was left on the basepaths to end the game. Cannon went 2-4, as did Big Vito. Adam Lind singled thrice. Davis Romero started and was the tough luck loser, giving up 2 runs in 5 innings on 3 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Jordan DeJong gave up an unearned run in 2 innings of work in relief of Romero. Danny Hill pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing 2 baserunners while punching out 1 B-Met batter.
Kevin Gray's column in the Union Leader is here.
Dunedin 7 @ Vero Beach 2
Ryan Klosterman's 3 run homer in the eighth inning broke a 2-2 tie and the D'Jays didn't look back. Ricky Romero made his season debut a successful one, allowing one run on 4 hits in 3 innings while punching 6 VB tickets. Justin James followed that up with 3 scoreless innings, allowing only a solitary hit and striking out 6 artful young Dodgers. The D'Jays took the lead early on a Robinson Diaz run-scoring double and a Christian Snavely single. After Klosterman's key blow, Dustin Majewski's 2 run double in the ninth put the game away. Majewski walked 4 times, in addition to his double. Ryan Patterson walked twice, as well.
Lansing 4 @ Peoria 6
The Lugnuts trailed 4-0 after 4 innings, but bunched 4 hits and 2 walks in the 5th inning to tie the game. Jacob Butler's RBI double and Cory Patton's 2 run single were the big blows of the frame. The outburst took starter Russ Savickas off the hook for the loss. Sean Stidfole came on and surrendered single runs to the Chiefs in the 7th and 8th innings, and the Lugnuts could not mount a late uprising. Savickas allowed 4 runs, 3 earned in 6 innings of work; he surrendered 7 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3. Butler had 2 hits, while Joey Metropolous singled and walked in 4 plate trips and Luke Hetherington doubled and walked in 4 appearances.
The Lugnuts face a rehabbing Kerry Wood this evening, with Billy Carnline getting the start for the Lugs. Brian Pettway says that facing Wood is a good measuring stick for him.
