Fours were lucky for the farm affiliates yesterday.  They went 2-1 with a rainout.

Durham 2 @ Syracuse 5

The Sky Chiefs could muster only 6 hits on the day, but bunched four of them to begin the fourth inning and scored 4 runs in the inning.  Ty Taubenheim was the beneficiary of this good four-tune, as he gave up 2 solo homers and nothing else of importance in 5.1 innings, while striking out six to collect his second win.  Ryan Houston was outstanding in middle relief and Gronk made the easy 1-inning save a piece of cake, surrendering a hit and goring a Bull.  Chad Mottola added a solo homer to his run-scoring single in the fourth.

Connecticut 9 @ New Hampshire 2

Connecticut scored 7 runs in the first inning off  Kurt Isenberg, and that was that.  Jordan DeJong pitched 4 shutout innings of relief with 3 strikeouts, but the Fisher Cats could manage only 4 hits, two of which were doubles by Miguel Negron and David Smith.  Adam Lind took an 0 fer, while Chip Cannon was 0 for 3 with an HBP.

Fort Myers 3 @ Dunedin 7

The D'Jays trailed 2-1 at the 7th inning stretch, but the exercise must have done them good as they rallied for four runs, with four walks at the beginning of the inning the key.  Dunedin drew 9 walks on the evening. Ryan Patterson went 2-3, including his 5th homer, and drew a walk, while Dustin Majewski also homered.  Lefty Eric Fowler started and went 5.1 innings, allowing a run and 4 baserunners while striking out 4. Brad Mumma threw 2 innings of 2 hit ball with 2 strikeouts to receipt for the win, while Conor Falkenbach came in to retire the last Miracle batter.

Lansing @ Quad Cities, ppd., rain

3 star selection

3rd star- Eric Fowler
2nd star- Ryan Patterson
1st star- Ryan Houston

Big things were expected of Eric Fowler this season so it was disappointing when he started slowly.  Fowler gave up six runs in his first start and lasted only 1.1 innings in his second start.  But his last three starts have been good with yesterdays the best of the season.

Notes from the daily's:

Jamie Vermilyea has been moved up to Syracuse as Marcum and McGowan moved to Toronto

Thigpen's stay on the DL is due to a knee infection

Doug Davis, the Fisher Cats manager, held a closed door meeting after yesterdays game to rip into the team

I think anyone who follows the Jays minor league system is well aware of their lack of position prospects, but this yaer is sort of ridiculous. The only team that seems to be hitting the ball at all is Lansing, and the upper level teams (New Hampshire and Dunedin), can't seem to get anything going. It's sort of scary for the future of the Jays bats.

Rather than this year is ridiculous I think you mean the first twenty games are ridiculous.  I assume you also think that Aaron Hill, Josh Towers and Jason Frasor are ridiculous too.  If anyone wants to bet with me that the Jays minor leaguers will not improve their hitting I will take that bet.

Also the opinion of many minor league watchers is that the inconsistent strike zones of the replacement umpires have a lot to do with the poor hitting all over the minor leagues, it is not just a Blue Jay phenomenon.

I guess it's pick on Maldoff day.....

Lansing are first in their league in hitting.  Dunedin are second in the FSL in hitting.  Syracuse are tenth out of fourteen but they have nine hits through five innings today.   The main team with problems is the Fisher Cats.  It was a similar story in April last year, I don't think those cool New Hampshire springs help the hitters.  Last season around this time Carlo Cota and Vito Chiaravalloti were sent down to shake up the team, Ryan Roberts came up and later Chip Cannon.  Give them time.

Gerry, glad to be the pinata! My comment was more on the prospect level, rather than the team level. If you look at our "prospects", you'll see the following (AVG/OBP/OPS): AAA Cosby - .270/.308/.713 JFG - .218/.244/.647 Hattig - .271/.292/.677 Roberts - .215/.271/.587 Santos - .212/.224/.466 AA Cannon - .243/.300/.705 Lind - .262/.287/.775 Negron - .195/.253/.513 Thigpen - .195/.298/.688 A Diaz - .269/.310/.638 Klosterman - .242/.289/.717 Patterson - .297/.340/.857 Snavely - .271/.328/.752 A (Lansing) Bell - .268/.281/.745 Butler - .202/.239/.608 Gonzalez - .254/.266/.615 Metropolous - .311/.386/.872 Pettway - .269/.305/.831 Rodriguez - .238/.314/.648 Shoffit - .321/.400/.805 Not a single player above Low-A has an OPS greater than 800, and too many have OPS below 700. I've also noticed a decided increase in the strikeout frequency of our hitters since the days of Aaron Hill and Russ Adams, who's K/BB ratios were close to 1.
