Then there won't be chocolates or cards or any of those other pre-fab presents for Bauxites this February 14. Nope. It will be a book. There are so many good choices.

First, there is the magnum opus of Tangotiger, MGL and Andy Dolphin, The Book (Playing the Percentages in Baseball). This title covers managerial strategic decisions, from the use of one-run strategies to batting order selection. There will undoubtedly be statistical heavy lifting, but I am looking forward to that workout.

Yesterday, I arrived home to find the Baseball Research Journal published every year by SABR. There's something for every taste in the Journal, from historical pieces on the Boston baked beans story and the naming of the shortstop as 6 on scorecards, to fascinating statistical analyses by Tom Ruane on clutch hitting and batters reaching on errors and Bill Deane on normalized winning percentages. Ruane employs an interesting process of comparing the actual distribution of situational hitting and reaching on error frequency over a career with simulations to get a handle on the role of luck. His method may find use soon in evaluations of DIPS over the long haul. A true Valentine would definitely consider a SABR membership for their beloved.

For prospect watchers, there is John Sickels' Baseball Prospect Book 2006. John will be stepping into da Box again soon with his usual insightful look at the minor league scene. At the same time, Baseball America has its 2006 Prospect book.

Single? No problem. Nothing is better for a baseball fan's state of mind, and self-esteem, than a good book.

That will indeed be a good workout. I can't find anywhere where it says it will be available in book stores. Will it?

And is anyone else having difficulty with the Jays ticketing server today?

Don't forget John Dewan's Fielding Bible, which will be published in about two weeks. I'm looking forward to having ANOTHER set of fielding stats to ponder...

Yup, can't get on to buy tickets either. You'd think a team that doesn't sell out would have better capacity for ticket sales.

I got in but when I did it asks me to type in the word that I see in the box (which normally I have no problem viewing). However, in my case all I can see is a red x in the box so I cannot get past this stage. Anyone else have this problem. Did anyone actually get through and order tickets?

THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING!

I got SABR's Baseball Research Journal for the first time yesterday, and I thought it was fitting that Dave Steib was on the back cover. It's a nice book to flip through, with lots of short articles that you can read quickly. I enjoyed the article on whether or not Greg Maddux actually ever used the "Bagwell gambit".
VBF - Saturday, February 11 2006 @ 01:53 PM EST (#140989) #
I did before, I was posing the initial question out there because there are tons of people having issues. They actually gave people permission to buy tickets at 9:50 am when I logged on, luckily.

Yup, can't get on to buy tickets either. You'd think a team that doesn't sell out would have better capacity for ticket sales.

Wouldn't it be the opposite? Opening Day is a lock to sell-out well before the actual game. This game in particular is probably the most anticipated game since they've allowed tickets to be purchased online. The traffic must be in the thousands with everyone clamouring to get in and nobody getting through. Call it the "Three Stooges" effect.

The Cheer Club ended up with 5 seats in section 130A row 27, which we reluctantly accepted since the only better options were sections closer to home plate, but in the last rows.

melondough - Saturday, February 11 2006 @ 02:35 PM EST (#140996) #
I finally got in about 15 miuntes ago. I ordered 16 seats top bowl and got 13 rows up right behind home plate (so I assume a lot of decent tickets still exist). I checked other sections to report here:
-Best field level baseline seats ($32) available were section 130.
-Best Field Level Bases ($42) available were section 115.

There is a $3.75 surcharge per ticket.

It took me a long time to not only get through but for certain sections of their screening process to work for me. Obviously make sure you have set up an account first and continue being persistant.

Good Luck!

I found the point below from Jeff Blair's February 10th post interesting(http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20051101.wblai/BNStory/Sports/home/?pageRequested=1).
It makes more sense to me now why they ammortize the bonuses:

"in a reminder of what kind of tight-rope that Blue Jays president and chief executive officer Paul Godfrey and Ricciardi both walk, sources tell me that it was only on Wednesday that the board of directors of Rogers Communications agreed to allow the Blue Jays to amortize the signing bonuses that they give out to players. In the previous five years of ownership by Rogers, the Blue Jays have been forced to account for their signing bonuses up front, while 25 of the remaining 29 teams were allowed to spread out the value of the bonus over the length of the contract. It's more than mere book-keeping hocus-pocus, since offering large signing bonuses is one of the few ways the Blue Jays can bid for free agents, since those signing bonuses are taxed at a much more favorable rate in Canada than are player's salaries. It's less about how much payroll the Blue Jays report to commissioner's office than it is about keeping accountants and regulatory administrators happy - it's part of the deal, in other words, when your owner runs a publicly-traded company"
Joseph Krengel - Sunday, February 12 2006 @ 01:43 AM EST (#141013) #
Amortization always comes across has "hinkey" when you try and match it to actual expenditures, but there is solid accounting theory behind it. The basic principle is that the value of of an expenditure covers the useful life of the asset (contract in this case), and how we account for it should reflect that.

I'm just throwing this out there. The mets want to get rid of their garbage Kaz Matsui:

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/story/390514p-331265c.html

He is not a good 2b, but since he has a pulse, he would at least provide some depth at the position for us. He could play a little here and there for both Adams and Hill. Meanwhile, we have some leftovers we could part with: Eric Hinske. As long as they bite as much salary as something like we did for Corey Koskie it might be good (he makes 8 million this year).

Now, in part to answer my own question, I really dislike Hinske, but I am starting to like him because it looks like he actually puts up good numbers against RHP, and if he is used just then, plus a confidence boost from less pressure this year and a better supporting cast (which I think is Hinske's main problem), I actually think he can do good, really good. On ther other hand, Kaz Matsui has had about 32 errors in 180 games over the last 2 years....

Any thoughts?
eeleye - Sunday, February 12 2006 @ 10:54 AM EST (#141016) #
Also, do you think Jimmy Rollins hitting streak of 36 games, which is still active, counts for the same thing if he continues it at the beginning of the season to break Damagio's record. I for one don't think so - there was a whole off-season apart.
eeleye - Sunday, February 12 2006 @ 11:06 AM EST (#141018) #
Last thing. Do you want to hear something really funnny? Jason Giambi will be making $18 million this year, and $21 million for EACH of 2007 and 2008. Plus a $5 million buyout for 2009 (unless they pick him up for 22 mil).
Geoff - Sunday, February 12 2006 @ 12:46 PM EST (#141019) #
C'mon, move Hinske for Kaz? I think the Jays' roster has pretty good balance now, although I don't despise McDonald like others do. And I think the Jays need their young guys to pull through because they have to get some cheap production from young guys.

Do you really think that the Mets would take all of Hinske's salary and pay a good chunk of Matsui's? I think it would be a downgrade in talent just to get money off the books if it happened. I see perhaps that many people are worried with all the spending the Jays' have done, they need to lop off some excess just to regain some flexibility. So if there aren't calls for Hillenbrand's head, it's for Hinske's.

Or maybe some Jays' fans are a little slap-happy from all the movement this offseason. Everything must go, out with the old and in with the new. It's exciting to be sure, but how much roster overhaul is enough before you see how they play together? Do you expect the Jays to make a move every couple weeks in an effort to 'improve' themselves? And I doubt the $8-million Kaz man is an improvement. Besides, why would the Mets want Hinske when they already have Chris Woodward filling a super-utility role?
eeleye - Sunday, February 12 2006 @ 01:09 PM EST (#141020) #
Actually, looking at Hinske's and Matsui's stats, I find what I said was really stupid. Matsui, while obviously not as good as Mcdonald defensively, is not that much better than Mcdonald's not-so-good offense. In other words, Matsui is awful offensively too. And I think Hinske will break through offensively this year. (and Rios will marginally increase).

Jimmy Rollins's hitting streak does indeed count. MLB, as always, will hold records for single-season and overall. Should Rollins start off with hits in 21 or more straight games, he'll hold the overall record. He'll need 57 games in a row though to be Dimaggio's single-season record.

Rob Neyer has an article up on ESPN.com about why it's better to have a farm system stocked with hitters than pitchers seeing as how they are more predictable. However, it's Insider material.

Seeing as how the Jays are doing the exact opposite, I figured it would be interesting to get people's POV on this debate. I tend to agree w/ Neyer although the Jays have gone for more predictable pitchers if that exists.
Mike Green - Wednesday, February 15 2006 @ 11:59 AM EST (#141234) #
Historically, 1st round position players have been more predictable than pitchers. This is perhaps true for 2nd round players as well, although I do not know of studies specific to that round. For later rounds, I doubt that there is much difference in predictability. Overall balance is probably a good idea because otherwise the team may face more constrained choices down the road. For example, if a team has a shortage of pitching prospects and injuries hit, the team may be forced to dip repeatedly into the expensive "mediocre free agent starter" market. This is not, in my view, a winning strategy.

In other news, Jose Lima signed with the Mets. Your day-after-Valentine's question is whether this was a baseball move (Jose for Kris) or was it Mrs. Lima for Anna? A certain "je ne sais quoi" might help peak interest in the club in the lively New York market.:)
Mick Doherty - Wednesday, February 15 2006 @ 12:32 PM EST (#141237) #
Mike, how does going from "mediocre free agent starter" to "Jose Lima" qualify as other news?

Great article on Cito, even if it had a few basic errors (missed his time as hitting coach post-manager days).

It always has seemed weird to me that he never got another managers job. Give him a vetern team with underachievers and I'd suspect he'd be a winner again. Cito drove me nuts at times, but he did mix in rookies (Sprague, Felix, Olerud) during the winning years along with getting more than expected from old vets and he did get two titles, or the same as Bobby Cox and Tony LaRussa merged together. I'll take those magical years and the ugly years that followed over the consistancy of making the playoffs but not winning that Atlanta has had.

New Jayson Stark article.

He lists the Jays as most improved, Burnett and Ryan as the most overspending on any free agent, and says that the Jays had discussion with the Phillies (along with many other teams) about Abreu, and that Vernon Wells was the player going the other way.

If Abreu was an infielder, the deal would have been done. All kidding aside, I would have tried to make the Abreu deal work and let Rios take over centerfield. Wells' only good year was 2003. Unfortunately, the Jays would have been torn apart by the Toronto mediots if they had traded Wells.
VBF - Wednesday, February 15 2006 @ 08:25 PM EST (#141254) #
Wells' only good year was 2003

That's some pretty high standards you're setting, Christian. Of course, I imagine that having averaged a 103 OPS+ and hitting a combined 74 home runs in non-2003 years, while earning the most respected defensive award in back to back seasons would make him the non-good player that he is. God forbid Rios turns into Wells.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=Au5p6X5d9TUW92jBN6qSdTc5nYcB?slug=ap-sosa-retirement&prov=ap&type=lgns

I bet its because he doesn't want to just burn out, realizing that his best days are vastly behind him (like Brett Boone). However, if he plays well in WBC, and/or another team makes him a bit better of an offer, I bet he is bluffing.
Cristian - Wednesday, February 15 2006 @ 11:18 PM EST (#141257) #
VBF,

I didn't set the high standard. Wells did. I'm a fan of Wells but I'm also a fan of Abreu and I think Abreu's skill set was a better fit for the team. As it stands now, corner outfield power is still this team's biggest need.

Sorry Newton but it looks as though Texas may be pouncing on your beloved Durazo. Looks to me like a potentially low risk investment for them if it happens.

From the Fort-Worth Satr Telegram:

"Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he has had preliminary conversations about signing designated hitter Erubiel Durazo to a nonguaranteed contract. Durazo is represented by Diego Bentz, who also represents outfielder Danny Bautista. Daniels said the Rangers have interest in both players."

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/sports/baseball/13886146.htm
John Northey - Thursday, February 16 2006 @ 05:06 PM EST (#141305) #
Durazo for non-guaranteed money is extremely good I'd think. A guy who only was sub-370 for an OBP and sub 430 Slg% during his injury year has to be worth a shot. I wonder what he gets if he does play? At 32 coming off his injury year it shouldn't be much I'd think.

If he signed here we'd see a log jam (yes, another one) in DH once Durazo was healthy (Hinske/Hillenbrand/Cat/Johnson/Rios already fighting for playing time in 3 slots).

Of course, Texas could see a log jam as well - on their web site it lists Phil Nevin (237/287/379 vs lifetime 273/345/475), David Dellucci (251/367/513), and Gary Matthews (255/320/436). 1B and 3B are occupied (Teixeira & Blalock), LF/RF has one of those 3 mixed with Kevin Mench (264/328/469) while Wilkerson takes CF. I guess Matthews would be the odd man out there to start the season with Nevin losing the DH slot (2 poor years in a row) should Durazo be healthy. Thus this makes more sense for Texas than Toronto.
Mick Doherty - Thursday, February 16 2006 @ 06:09 PM EST (#141309) #
I'd be shocked if Nevin made the Texas roster; I think he's done. And sir, you don't mention young Laynce Nix, who the Rangers still fervently believe is a future star.

Cool pics VBF. And though I'm almost certain no one is still reading this thread, I may as well say a few things anyway. Halladay says that he wants to come back with the Blue Jays:
Halladay, at some point in the near future, is expected to enter into his own negotiations for a similar extension. It only seems right.

"I'd love to stay here," the six-year Jay veteran admitted. "That's in (the Jays') hands at what point they'd like to do that. It's something that I would look forward to, the chance to be able to stay here. If that opportunity comes up, I'm sure I'd take it pretty seriously."

A couple of things:
  • I may have been misinformed in my statement that you can't get opening day tickets in advance with the Season's Pass. When I bought my passes today, I was told that pass holders could pick up opening day tickets up to 2 weeks in advance of opening day.
  • According to 680 News this morning, the entire Jays roster has reported to Spring Training early. Reed Johnson talked about that a little bit, saying it was very unusual. A lot of that could be because of the WBC, I suppose.
  • I don't know why you'd say nobody's reading this thread. I assumed everyone read what was new by looking at the Hot Topics list on the left.

Those pictures that VBF linked to show us another uniform change for the Jays -- last season they abandoned their home grey caps in favour of wearing the road blacks full-time; in these pictures you can see that they've also ditched their grey batting practice caps (which are a different material from the game caps -- absorbent and stuff) in favour of black.

Actually, I've been semi-seriously looking at going the Sirius route, but their current receivers are pretty ass-tacular compared to the ones available in the States.

I was looking at both Sirius and XM, but then I heard a demo -- and wow, they ain't CD quality by a longshot. More like bad mp3 quality.

I wouldn't listen to music on 'em, that's for sure. Bleah.

CDs are bad enough. I'm not going to pay money on a monthly basis to drop down another level in quality.

I've opened up to non-Howarth/Wilner FAN 590 radio. The Morning Crew are both hilarious and without bias (and they lobbied for the Chacin cologne), Chuck Swirsky is annoying, but he's tolerable, and I couldn't stand Bob McCowan for the longest time, but he seems to be noticeably less angry at the world (I've also noticed when he's not around Friedman, and the creepy Jim Kelly) he's actually rather interesting to listen to.

And even despite the big news in the last few weeks (Hockey scandal, Olympics) they've all taken a good chunk out of their daily programs for Blue Jays Personnel interviews and general Jays discussion.
VBF - Friday, February 17 2006 @ 02:56 PM EST (#141353) #
Also, maybe one of the Roster's Technical Crew could help me out with this. Sometimes when threads are started, on my computer they don't show up on the front page with the other ones, but I know that the thread exists because I can see it in the hot topics sidebar. For example, I can't see the GBNF Thread for the O-Dog on the front page.

It's not that big of a deal at all, but I was just curious if others have this problem, or if it's just me.

I'm far from a technical expert, but I think I know what it is.

In your preferences (in the green at the top left of the page) I suscept you probably have an excluded items box checked. For example, if you check 'Draft' threads they won't show up on the main page but you will see them in the side bar.

Okay, I figured it out. While non of the boxes were checked, Mike Green's name was highlighted, as authors to ignore (I didn't do that, honest Mike. Must have defaulted itself) but since there's nowhere else to check that isn't the name of an author, I switched it to not including authors named "Admin". There's isn't an option to ignore nobody.
