Now, 2007 is a whole other story.

2. Billy Butler gets called up in June and hits 25 HR the rest of the way.
3. Mike McDougal saves 50 games with an ERA of 1.75.
4. Ruben Gotay turns into Jorge Cantu.
5. Mike Sweeney wins the MVP with a line of .325, 35 HR, 150 RBI.
6. David Dejesus leads the league in OBP (.425) and runs scored (145).

-Greinke steps up and posts a 0.97 ERA goinng 21-6
-Runelvys Hernandez (my third favorite non-Jay) loses 10 pounds and posts a 3.33 ERA and goes 14-8.
-Grudzielanek has a super year with a .305 average and a .770 OPS.
-A career year by Sweeney and Stairs is essential.
-Mike MacDougal becomes Trevor Hoffman.
-Jose Lima casts a magical spell on the rest of the AL Central

I think the rest of MLB would have to be suspended for steroids. Except maybe the Devil Rays.

If all the things in Jacko's list happened, the Royals would win 105 games in 2006. If even half those things happened, they'd win 90. Alas, none of those things will, in fact, happen.

This isn't nearly as bad a team as it was this past season, but it would take a true Braves-style miracle for this club to leapfrog 3 solid teams and win their division.

No one has mentioned the one obvious thing that could happen.

Alex Gordon blows up in Spring Training, makes the team, and wins the ROY at something like 300/400/550 in 650 PA.

A mysterious professor arrives at Royals camp in the spring and pitches the Royals to the World Series Championship with the help of a wood repelling elixir... its not that unlikely, it happens every spring.

Offseason find Steve Nebraska pitches 50 perfect 27 K games.

The Royals acquire Kris Benson and contruct a cardboard likeness of wife removing one cardboard cut out worth of clothing per victory.

Surely you've seen how Anna Benson "dresses." Do you really think Kris is going to win NO games this year?

The clouds part, and God Himself, wearing a Royals cap, points His finger at Kauffman Stadium, signifying that Kansas City is Truly Blessed.

Even then, they'll probably finish third.

And please, no "Trade Jeremy Affeldt for the Yankees rotation and bullpen plus Sheffield" ideas ... be serious! The Royals DO have a budget, you know!
