Everybody's favorite Toronto reporter, Jeff Blair, says that a Wilkerson deal is dead but Overbay is still a possibility in his latest blog entry.

Teams had until 11:59 pm on Wednesday to offer arbitration to free agents. Now that this information is known to other teams we should see a little more activity with free agents as teams will now know whether they have to give up draft pick compensation for free agents.

Today is the Rule 5 draft. The Jays have a full 40 man roster at the moment so they will be unable to make a selection in the major league portion of the draft.

Well, I imagine the deal would be dead, because Wilkerson was traded to the Rangers along with Termell Sledge and a minor league pitcher for Alphonso Soriano.

Wilner was just on the Fan: he says the Jays have scheduled a press conference for 12:30 AM ET (about 15 minutes from now) to announce a trade.

As soon as I hear the details, I'll put up a new thread specifically for it.

I just read on mlb.com that Tom Cheek has been selected a finalist for the Ford Frick Award.

Cheek joins former Blue Jay/NBC announcer Tony Kubek and Expos voice Jacques Doucet

Does doing this deal free up 2 40-man roster spots? Thus giving us two picks in the rule-5 draft?

I love how Stormin' Norman keeps calling Jackson "Zach Johnson"
6-4-3 - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 12:31 AM EST (#135248) #
No, this deal would only free up one spot on the 40 man roster. Jackson isn't on the 40 man, so you subtract Gross and Bush, and add Overbay.
Dylan - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 12:33 AM EST (#135250) #
Overbay is solid player but is he worth those three players. He's basically Shea with a better OBP. Which is good and he'll definitly improve the team. I just think I'm missing someting with Overbay, I'm not being sarcastic, I just don't understand why he's worth 3 decent prospects. Could someone explain it to me. It only took Peterson to get Shea, even tho Arizona seemed to be in a hurry to get rid of him. Is it the park, is the thinking that SkyDome would increase his numbers a fair amount?
rtcaino - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 12:36 AM EST (#135253) #

The Overbay thread is up -- let's move the talk of the trade there and leave this one for other wheeling and dealing at the Winter Meetings.

Don't know if I like this deal, but I trust JP.
This is what we've been waiting for, and man is it fun. So much better than hoping to get Todd Worrell.
In the spirit of this off-season, I suggest that Lyle change his first name to L.S. (middle name is Stefan).

I'm not a fan of this deal at all. I could care less about Bush because I feel that he flamed out in Toronto and would never have amounted to anything in TO. However, I can't believe they dealt Zach Jack. It's apparent that Gross was never going to play in Toronto, so he really doesn't matter in the deal.

Overbay better pick up his production, or this deal has piked written all over it.

I'm still a fan of the way JP spent the cash and got Ryan and Burnett. The Jays actually feel like a big time team again. Screw pocket pinching!
Terran - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 12:44 AM EST (#135265) #
"However, I can't believe they dealt Zach Jack"

Yah, that's not the best. But the Jays have an excess of promising southpaws so I guess we could part with one.

If opening day was today, think our lineup would look like this:

1) Adams
2) Overbay
3) Wells
4) Koskie
5) Hillenbrand
6) Cat/John
7) Zuan
8) Hudson
9) Rios

Waveburner - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 01:34 AM EST (#135326) #
I'm guessing they don't have much interest in Rios in a Wilkerson trade. How about Lilly or Batista plus Adams and a pitching prospect? They could move either Adams or Young to 2B to take Soriano's spot.

Jays lose Andrade and Vermilyea in rule 5 draft.
Gerry - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 10:30 AM EST (#135442) #
Of the two I would expect Andrade has the better chance to stick with a major league team. Andrade has always put up good strikeout numbers and was excellent in the Arizona fall league.

Vermilyea did not have as successful a 2005 as he did in 2004. Jamie pitched well at AA but was hit hard at AAA. Vermilyea is a sinker/slider pitcher and needs to have excellent control to survive. That control was lacking in AAA where he was unable to pitch down in the zone and was hit hard by the more experienced hitters.

In the first round of the AAA rule 5 draft the Jays have lost Eugenio Velez and Jayce Tingler.
Marc Hulet - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 10:36 AM EST (#135447) #
Hey Gerry, Are you listening to this on MLB radio or is it being posted somewhere? My work computer (a MAC) does not like MLB radio... Thanks.
Gerry - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 10:40 AM EST (#135450) #
Yes, MLB radio but with interruptions I am not 100% accurate. I heard "New Hampshire" after Tingler had been picked so the Jays lost someone else, not sure who.

Jays themselves passed in round 1.
Gerry - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 10:43 AM EST (#135453) #
Andrade was picked by the Devil Rays, good chance to stick.

Vermilyea by the Red Sox, poor chance to stick.

Not me -- 2004 was the only year I've ever won a baseball pool, and I credit the mid-season acquisition of Brad Wilkerson for putting me over the top.

So anything the Jays do to bring him to Toronto will please me.

Apparently Buck Martinez was on the radio in Baltimore this morning (he is the Orioles' TV colour commentator) saying he has heard that a Javy Lopez for Hinske and Batista deal is being discussed. Take this with appropriate quantities of salt.

From Germ I Isnt's latest (Tim Singer, the new guy(?)):

His arrival creates a logjam at first base, with Eric Hinske and Shea Hillenbrand still on the scene after having split time at the position last season.

"We'll deal with that tomorrow," Ricciardi said with a weak grin following another long, productive day that stretched to the witching hour.

Ooh!

he has heard that a Javy Lopez for Hinske and Batista deal is being discussed. Take this with appropriate quantities of salt.

Huh. It actually makes sense on the surface -- the Orioles signed Hernandez and now have two expensive catchers on the roster. They need pitching, and might be willing to take on Hisnke's salary if the Jays assumed Lopez's cash. And the Jays could certainly use a catcher. But Lopez has over 1,400 games behind the plate and will be 35 next season. I'd rather have Gerald Laird myself.

Leigh - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 12:48 PM EST (#135515) #
I had been wondering what the fascination with Laird was all about, until I saw this: 2005, PCL, .310/.380/.562.

On a side note, I knew that I had mentioned Laird before.

I'm torn on that potential Lopez for Hinske + Batista deal - On the one hand I think its a steal value wise...on the other hand, Javy is not a guy I want behind the plate and in a DH role I'd much prefer Nomar...I don't think it happens anyways, so my opinion is even more moot than usual
Sheldon - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 01:13 PM EST (#135525) #
I don't mind a Javy Lopez for Hinske and Batista deal.
He's and Zaun IIRC are the same age, plus its the last year of Lopez's contract...the last time he was in this situation was 2003 and he murdered the ball that year with an OPS of 1.065, now I'm not saying he'll do that again, but if JP's in a gambling mood, it could be a fun pick up....
Rich - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 01:15 PM EST (#135527) #
Javy's walk totals collapsed last year, which is a concern. He was great in 03 and 04 after a miserable 2002, but I'm a bit wary at his age. Not a bad plan B I suppose if Nomar isn't acquired.

The most important numbers for a pitcher aren't his age, but how he's performed recently. Rogers has had four good-to-very-good seasons in a row - he could be worth that deal.

Could be.
Jacko - Thursday, December 08 2005 @ 03:21 PM EST (#135562) #
Rogers is going from an extreme hitting environment to an extreme pitching environment, so that bodes well for his numbers (his $ value just moved up a few ticks in fantasy baseball).

Actually, posting a 3.46 ERA in Texas last year was pretty heroic. Rogers doesn't strike anyone out, and the defense behind him was not all that great.

Rotoworld's take on Majewski and Taubenheim.

Blue Jays acquired outfielder Dustin Majewski from the Athletics to complete the Chad Gaudin trade.
Majewski, who was available in the Rule 5 draft, hit .272/.348/.477 with 13 SB for Single-A Stockton last season. There's a chance that he could have a career as a reserve, but he'll need to step it up in Double-A next season. Dec. 8 - 3:06 pm et

Blue Jays acquired RHP Ty Taubenheim from the Brewers for LHP Zach Jackson to complete the Lyle Overbay trade.
Taubenheim, 23, got some notice by going 10-2 with a 2.63 ERA in 16 starts for Single-A Brevard County last season. He was 2-6 with a 4.36 ERA after moving up to Double-A. His stuff is pretty average, so he appears to be a bottom-of-the-rotation starter at best. Dec. 8 - 3:01 pm et

From Rotoworld:

"The Jays are considering offering Nomar Garciaparra a two-year deal.
Nomar is believed to have an offer of $4 million plus incentives for one year from the Orioles. It appears likely now that Garciaparra will get a two-year deal if he he wants one."

I just hope JP isnt being seduced by past accomplishments on the whole Nomar thing. What's the status of any injuries he might have anyway? I sort of lost track of him last year. Just looking at the stats he didnt have a great year and didnt get to the plate much. I trust that the Jays have done any due diligence but Im curious.

Is $4M a year + plus incentives (if the reports are correct) really that much, for a player who when *hurt* Slugs over .475?

If the Jay's can get him for this 'cheap' a price, I say do it. Damn the logjam's it creates in the infield!!

The Jays BLEW 21 saves last year!! Will BJ, Speier, Schoenweis, Fraso, Chulk, Downs, McGowan, Marcum, League etc. etc. blow 21? I don't think so...

Bear in mind that the blown saves stat isn't just talking about leads blown in the 9th inning. A middle reliever, whom the manager has no intention of even leaving around long enough to earn a save, can get tagged with a blown save in the 6th inning if, say, he allows a run in a 3-2 game.

This is why middle relievers often have stats like "0 saves, 6 blown saves", and why, when teams convert middle relievers to closers, some in the media trot out their meaningless saves vs. blown saves record as if this somehow indicates a lack of aptness for the job.

    Jonny German - Friday, December 09 2005 @ 08:40 AM EST (#135726) #
I'd say it indicates the media man's lack of aptness for the job quite nicely.

CBS4 in Boston is reporting that Bill Mueller has agreed to a deal with the Dodgers. No terms yet, but it will probably be a two-year pact.

That would put the Koskie-to-LA thoughts to rest.

Blair's Globe column and blog indicate that while Ricciardi hasn't given up on Wilkerson, it's tough to get a deal done with the Rangers' novice GM. At this point, I don't see any other trade possibilities on the radar -- JP scotched the Javy Lopez talk, and there's been no indication of discussions with Tampa or Cincinati. Hillenbrand to Minnesota remains a possibility, but one they'd probably pursue as a last resort. In terms of free agents, it seems that Garciaparra and Sanders remain reasonable possibilities, while Piazza and Thomas are not.

Accordingly, the Jays' must-do list really has only three entries at the moment: shave several million off the payroll, add an outfield bat, and clear out the corner-infield backlog. Some or all of those moves could be interconnected.

As mentioned elsewhere, two of Hillenbrand, Hinske and Batista must go. Since Hillenbrand is the best bet to DH at the moment (in the absence of a FA signing), the latter two seem the likeliest to leave. They could be packaged together, but it's more likely that Batista, who still has perceived value, would be part of a Wilkerson or similar trade for an outfielder, which could itself involve some combination of Rios, Hudson, a reliever or one of the farm-system pitchers. Hinske may simply end up as a salary dump.

The middle infield situation won't be resolved until it's determined who (if anyone) gets dealt in a Wilkersonesque trade, but the Jays aren't under the gun there: Hill can always start the year at Syracuse, and it wouldn't be the worst thing for him if he did: he faded down the stretch last season.

Otherwise, the team is actually pretty close to set. The rotation will very likely be Halladay-Burnett-Chacin-Towers-Lilly, and that's pretty damn good. The bullpen is Ryan-Speier-Frasor-Schoeneweis-Downs-and-choose-your-extra-arm, and that's also very solid. That's the best pitching staff in the divison, and rivals the best in the AL overall. The position players are in flux, but even at that, Zaun will at least split time at catcher, Koskie and Overbay are your corner infielders, and Wells and Johnanotto occupy 2/3 of the outfield spots. The key to resolving the rest of it lies in whether JP can combine the acquisition of a right fielder with the jettisoning of surplus players. That might take us into January.

    robertdudek - Friday, December 09 2005 @ 09:49 AM EST (#135732) #
I'll add a fourth point to Jordan's list: a reliable veteran backup catcher who can hit a bit.

There must be a contingency plan in place if Quiroz can't handle the backup job (something I wouldn't have considered an issue with Q a few years ago) - something that is not named Ken Huckaby.

And if Zaun gets hurt and the team has to go with AAA quality catching for any length of time, the offense will take a considerable hit.

Obtaining adequate insurance at the catching position is one of those essential little details of building a contending ballclub.

    I don't think so...

Hmm. How many blown will occur? Lets see who did the 21 last year.

Via TSN and ESPN with stats shown as Saves-Holds-Blown Saves in order of total blown saves.
    Batista-> 31-0-8
    Speier->0-11-4
    Schoeneweis->1-21-3
    Walker->2-4-3
    Frasor->1-15-2
    Chulk->0-13-1
Holds also gained by McGowan and League but neither got a save or blew one.

All but Batista and maybe Walker will be in the pen in 2006. BJ Ryan had 5 blown saves. So total savings, if everyone acts like they did last year? 6. But that assumes that the Jays #6/7 relievers (Downs & whoever) blow none. Odds are they won't be more effective than Walker, thus the saved blown saves is down to 3.

Is this the right way to view things? Maybe, maybe not, but it does show that this pen could easily blow 21 saves next year.

Note: LaTroy Hawkins and Chris Reitsma are the only guys to blow 9 (ie: more than Batista) last year.

    Ryan C - Saturday, December 10 2005 @ 12:35 AM EST (#135917) #

Incidentally your number 3 above is interesting. Last year the Red Sox had 3 more Saves and 3 less Blown Saves than the Jays did (38/18 vs 35/21). Meaningless stat I think, but interesting how that works out. For interest's sake, the Yankees had 46 Saves and 19 Blown Saves.

Your middle relievers could log a couple of blown saves in a game you actually win. Saves and blown saves are dubious enough for closers (since not all save opportunities are created equally), but blown saves for middle relievers are ridiculous. Your worst reliever, the 7th guy in the pen, will almost always pitch when the team is losing so will almost never log any blown saves.

Would that all the mainstream reliever metrics be done away with.

I think we need a new thread for general yackety-yack, especially as GM activity figures to slow down over the holidays.

Ken Huckaby was something of a fan favourite in these parts, though I could take or leave his whole Enzo Hernandez schtick. Still, he may have a job being a knuckleball catching specialist. Not sure what experience he has in this area or why he's been specifically targeted, but power to him if he can earn a major league salary catching once every 5 days.

Other low-level news sees Jack Cust moving to the last team you (or he) would ever imagine: San Diego. Ending up in a pitcher's park in the non-DH league surely means it's time to sound the death knell for his career.

Finally, both Raul Mondesi and Benito Santiago want it known that they are looking for jobs in 2006. Don't everyone rush at once. Single file please. The queue starts here. I hear there are openings in Miami starting (and ending) at $300K. Loria and Mondesi deserve each other.

I'd like to see a new thread up for general talk and speculation.

Here's a couple trade thoughts that wenrt through my head as I did the dishes this morning:

Oakland and Texas make a deal involving Zito and Wilkerson

Tejada to Philly for Abreu and Rollins

Me to the beer store for an 8-pack of Creemore
