...since Phoenix or Tucson. So, how are the Jay farmhands in Arizona doing, you ask? They started off slower than a coyote in the morning, but they're moving now.

The farmhands play for the Peoria Saguaros, who've put up a butt-ugly 8-21 record so far. The Jay position players are Adam Lind, Guillermo Quiroz and Ryan Roberts. Their statistics courtesy of milb.com are:

Lind .247/.310/.338
Quiroz .313/.353/.438
Roberts .264/.292/.473

Quiroz hit his first homer of the AFL season yesterday.

The Jays also contributed pitchers Steve Andrade and Bubbie Buzachero to the Saguaros. Andrade has probably been the team's best pitcher with an ERA of 4.50 in 12 innings, while allowing 1 homer and 7 walks but punching out 21. Andrade will be joining the US Olympic qualifying team after the AFL season. Buzachero has put up a better than average 5.09 ERA with 12 walks and 15 strikeouts in 17.1 innings.

The AFL season ends on Thursday.

Wow, that's good news. Nice to see Quiroz starting to come into his own. Hopefully he will be able to do something like that next year (or at least close to it!).

Lind started off REALLY slowly in the AFL, but has picked up the pace significantly over the last week or so. Conversly, Roberts started hot, and has cooled off a little bit. Quiroz seems to be platooning, which is an ideal situation for a catcher in the AFL.

I was in Phoenix at the weekend and spoke to the Blue Jay players. I also spoke with Canadians Adam Loewen, Joey Votto and George Kottaras. Look for some updates by the end of the week.

This has nothing to do with the AFL, or the Jays system, but I read something in the Detroit Free Press about two weeks ago that struck me as odd and could have an affect on the Eastern League. Apparently, from what I read, someone is looking to move the Erie team and the possible relocation is in the suburbs of Detroit. I wish I could find a link to the story on the internet, but does anyone know anything about this? It doesn't seem to make much sense to me as it isn't exactly a geographical fit.

If this happened, I think you would see a similar arrangement between the Tigers and this team as Dayton currently has with Cincinnati in that as long as the team would be competing in their market, they would have to affiliated with them.

I think Chad Gaudin is doing alright as well - from rotoworld

"Chad Gaudin allowed an unearned run over 4 1/3 innings Saturday for Magallanes of the VWL.
Gaudin has a 2.41 ERA, though he has given up 25 hits in 18 2/3 innings. The Jays will likely have the right-hander compete for a bullpen spot next spring."

I assume VWL is Venezuelan Winter League, but I didnt realize it had started

Thank you, Anders. It seems the Venezuelan Winter League has started. Here are the league pitcher's stats. Gaudin has been so-so despite the nice ERA. Aguilas, a club in the VWL, appears to have reserved a spot for Guillermo Quiroz; I don't know if he'll be going there after the AFL season is done. The Puerto Rican Winter League starts up this year on December 6.

Mike,

You're theory regarding Quiroz is correct. I read in an interview on ITD that he is going to be heading there for winter ball once the AFL season wraps up.

Quiroz told me he will take a week off, then start playing winter ball.

Excellent reference to my favourite 10,000 Maniacs song.

Those are pretty wretched stats for Lind and Roberts. The AFL is a hitters' league.
