After successful stints in Dunedin and New Hampshire, Mike Basso was named manager of the Syracuse Sky Chiefs yesterday. Basso replaces Marty Pevey, who is now the Jays' first base coach. We look forward to seeing Basso and the Chiefs in person in 2006.
This was predictable once Marty Pevey was promoted to the Jays. Basso has an excellent reputation among his peers. IIRC he was selected as manager of the year in the EL in 2004 which is not surprising as the Fisher Cats won the EL.
In 2005 I know Basso was picked as an excellent major league managerial prospect, but I cannot remember where I saw that. In Syracuse Basso will manage many of the same players he managed in New Hampshire this year. Marcum, Banks, Perkins, Jackson, Vermilyea, Roberts and Cosby should all be in AAA.

Any thoughts on who will be in Double-A to take Mike's old job?
There are three choices for New Hamshire, Omar Malave, Ken Joyce or TBD. Malave has managed up and down the Jays organization but I tend to think he was sent to Dunedin for a reason and I think Malave might stay in Dunedin. Joyce could get jumped from Lansing to New Hampshire or the Jays could go outside the organization. Outside is probably the most likely choice.
I'd love to see Ken come up here. He was the hitting instructor for the Ravens AA in 2003.
Basso was also the Manager of the Year in the FSL with Dunedin. Sounds like he has a pretty good reputation within and outside of the organization.
I think Ken would be a great choice for AA manager and deserves it. I know that Lansing would miss him though becasue he is very good at that level. He is always teaching and coaching not only his players, but the fans, media, umpires, etc.
There is talk in NH about Butch Hobson as a possibility:
Does anyone know the story as to why Malave was demoted two levels? You don't often see that within an organisation.
Ryan Roberts hit his 4th homer of the AFL season, while Lind and Quiroz had 2 hits each again as the Saguaros continued their winning ways yesterday.
Lind started out the AFL 1-26. Since then he's gone 12-24.
Adam Lind hit his 1st AFL homer on Saturday, a game-winning 3 run blow. Click on the link for a swing follow-through photo.
That's not an attractive photo. The above-belt area reminds me of Homer Simpson's super-slo-mo home run blast in "Homer At The Bat".
It's true. Lind is supposed to be long and lean, but not in that picture.
Ryan Roberts hit his 5th homer of the AFL season yesterday. Guillermo Quiroz doubled and singled in 4 trips, while Adam Lind went 1-4. The Saguaros led 2-1 with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninths, but surrendered a 2 run homer to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I could be wrong, but I suspect it's just a loose jersey.
