OK, OK, I'll drag myself away from the Data Table I'm working on...

I understand there was some controversy in last night's Angels-White Sox game?

As someone who scores games, and watches the umpires like a hawk, I can testify that the home plate umpire's visual gestures mean nothing. Otherwise, they might have a standard procedure, followed by everyone. But no two home plate umpires make the same visual gestures. They're a convenience offered up for the fans. So everything depends on what Eddings said at the time...

Cardinals won, if anyone's interested...

Jim Tracy gets the Pittsburgh job. Does this mean Ken Macha in Los Angeles?

Mel Stotttlemyre says he's through in New York. He says this every year, generally more than once. But this time, who knows... it might be for real.

The Yankees say their top priority is re-signing Matsui, but you can believe they will also be going after Johnny Damon and B.J. Ryan. I think they'll leave A.J. Burnett to the Red Sox, myself.

Tonight - there is baseball!

Ken Macha read Moneyball. There is no way he will put himself through another Moneyball GM. Ken Macha may find himself without a job this year, but he will have one by 07.

I read that Depodesta hated Macha more than Beane did, so i would be very surprised to see him in LA.

Anyone think the Yankees would take Carlos Beltran's contract off the Mets' hands in exchange for several players like Chacon, Cano and Wang?

The Dodgers apparently plan to interview player personnel director Terry Collins who used to manage the Angels and is supposed to be the front-runner. They are also considering Alan Trammell, Jerry Royster (currently managing AAA Las Vegas), and Torey Lovullo (AA Akron, Easterm League champs).

The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Larry Bowa is on the interview list for the Oakland job. I can't figure out if that's brilliant or insane. Probably both, I guess.

Bowa could make a terrific short-term guy, to kick some ass after Macha's more laid-back style. Apparently he and Beane know each other well and like each other's intensity.

It depends on who decided not to go after Beltran last year. If it was Steinbrenner, then this would involve admitting error. But if Cashman talked George out of going after Beltran, something like this would be the Boss' style.
