This group of players shouldn't be hard for you to figure out:
  1. Patrick Lennon (ex-Jay hit .265, 1991-99)
  2. David McCarty (misspelled, true, but as close as we get)
  3. Roric Harrison (RHRP, 1972-78)
  4. Ray Starr (WWII All-Star RHSP, 1932-33, '41-'45)
That's right, it's MEET ...

... BASEBALL'S BEATLES. (Just plug in "John, Paul, George and Ringo" for "Patrick, David, Roric and Ray" ... see?) Your challenge is to pick a famous band, name their members (provide a link so we can check your work, kids) and those members' Baseball Hall of Names equivalents.

Actually, nobody named anything close to LeBon has ever played major league baseball, or I would have started with Duran Duran. (And actually, thanks to Dan Duran of the 1981 Rangers and Roberto -- yes, that's right, Roberto -- Duran of the 1997-98 Tigers, we could have even had a band name Hall of Names equivalent. Alas!)

The only "rule," as you will have surmised from the Beatles examples, is that the name, while preferably an exact match, be close enough that you might mistake it for the real thing when shouted in a loud bar over the sounds of a live cover band. So if you try the Rolling Stones, for instance, don't go sneaking Reggie Jackson onto your list claiming it sounds enough like "Jagger." But if you're looking for a Pete Townshend soundalike, any of the four Townsends who have played big league ball will answer to "Who Are You?".

Solo artists -- former STL RHRP John "Elvis" Costello, for instance -- are perfectly appropriate for this challenge. First/last name switches are not, so don't go trying to slide Joel Pineiro into Billy Joel's Piano Man seat.

Five million bonus points to anyone who finds an exact match for any member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; that may be easier than I think, I haven't looked. Try http://www.rockhall.com/hof/ for ideas; and you already know http://www.baseballreference.com, right?

Now, Bauxites ... Rock on!

Sorry about that last one...

A couple of big solo acts get in on the game. But who's the real Prince of this group?

Prince Fielder (Major league progeny and prospect extrodanaire)
or
Tom Prince (16 years, 24 hr's)
or
Jeff Nelson (Former all star and Yankee extrodanaire)

Prince's real name is Prince Rogers Nelson. You decide.

And let's not forget about the biggest of them all.

Mike Jackson has racked up 62 wins and 147 saves over the past 17 years, notably with the Indians a few years back.

Claude Hendrix (Federal League superstar),
Kevin Mitchell (Giants slugger), and
Tim Redding (fringe major league starter)

are my picks for the Jimi Hendrix Experience team.

Ed(Annie) Lennox and the other Dave Stewart would make an unlikely team. Would I lie to you?

Barry Bonds is a REAL reach, Jordan ... besides, with Dick Allen already around to play the moody, pouty lead guitarist, what's Barry gonna do?
Jordan - Monday, September 12 2005 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#127881) #
What can I say? I need a Bonsall, and this was as close as I could get. You should have seen the gymnastics I was going through to get a Diamond, Yauch and Horovitz in there.
Mick Doherty - Monday, September 12 2005 @ 01:57 PM EDT (#127883) #
Wait a year and Thomas Diamond will be getting late-2006 callup action with the Rangers.

I suppose Houk (or even Yount) for Yauch doesn't quite do it, though.

Prince's real name is Prince Rogers Nelson. You decide.

As Johnny Carson used to say, I did not know that. Of course, there used to be a pitcher with the Royals and Reds named Roger Nelson, so maybe we should go with him!
