The Dunedins are done, the Doubledays are drawing to a close

Playoffs: Dunedin 0 @ Lakeland 1

When your starter goes 6 innings allowing 3 hits while striking out 10 and is backed up by shutout relief, you expect to win. Unfortunately, one of those hits Kyle Yates allowed was a solo homer, and the Tiger pitching was equally dominant. Carlo Cota was the only Jay hitter worth mentioning – a single and a double in 4 trips. So ends the Blue Jay season, dropping their best-of-three division series in two straight.

Boxscore

Auburn 2 @ Batavia 8

Not much of note in the DoubleDay’s second-last regular season contest. Bobby Ray had a rare off night, allowing 4 runs in 4 innings, as did relievers Jesse Litsch (2 unearned runs on 2 hits and a walk) and Paul Phillips (2 earned on 2 hits and a walk). Peter Eberhardt and Edward Rodriguez tossed a scoreless frame each.

SS Chris Gutierrez had two hits, while RF Brian Pettway had a double in 2 AB and Marshall Bernhard had a pinch-hit RBI double.

Three-Star Selection!

Let’s repeat what Ryan said yesterday: With only one team still in regular season action, there isn't much to choose from. But thanks to our new weighting system, the awardees won't pick up too many points either.

The Third Star: Brian Pettway

The Second Star: Marshall Bernhard

The First Star: Chris Gutierrez

Forgot to include this bonus material. John Sickels has a brief comment on Josh Banks at his site MinorLeagueBall.com, with the conclusion I can see him being a solid number three-four starting strike-thrower, a Radke type.

Those control pitchers just can't get no respect! Radke's been a 1-2 starter with Minnesota during his career. He's obviously not Johan Santana, but he's a key component of a fine club, with a career ERA+ of 114.

Control pitchers rarely are above-average in their late 30s, but during their pre-free agency years are often as good or better than their flame-throwing/strike-zone challenged compatriots.

I was thinking the same thing about being Radke-like, but just being a 3-4 starter.

For what it's worth, Chris Karhl is bullish on control pitcher Shaun Marcum in the latest TA at BP.

Where does Yates fit into the scheme of things? He's had a great year and recently made BA's prospect hot list.

At Class-A Dunedin, Lind joined the likes of Tony Fernandez (1982-83), Jeff Kent (1990-91) and Carlos Delgado (1990,1992-93) to become the 20th player in organization history to win two or more Webster Awards. The outfielder was named Auburn's MVP last season. ~ Jordan Bastian, MLB.com

That is quite some company he has. If Lind could become a hitter like any of those 3 for the Blue Jays, I would be a very happy man.

P.S. What's the scouting report on Kyle Yeats? What does he throw and how hard

Stay tuned for Jordan's rankings!

Yates was drafted in the 13th round last year, so based on that I imagine the proverbial upside probably isn't that high, but based on his Dunedin performance he certainly looks like he might be useful. Like most pitchers the real test begins in AA.

Actually, they're not just my rankings this year -- they're the combined efforts of the whole minor-league crew. Look for a three-part Top 30 Prospects series later this month. Yates will be on it.
